Geo TV’s Mujhay Qabool Nahi is Changing the Narrative

The drama revolves around the story of Maira (Madiha Imam) and Salman’s (Sami Khan) child marriage and the implications it has had in Maira’s life over the years. Tied in a bond with a cousin that she absolutely despises, Maira has been silently fighting her battle against her ‘Nikkah’ that was performed against her wishes when she was a teenager. However, she seems to have accepted her fate and is ready for a life of destruction with the man who is simply using her as an ATM machine.

Attir (Ahsan Khan) plays the knight in shining armour to Maira who is determined to educate and empower her to fight for her rights.

The show also touches an important aspect of financial independence for women. Attir advises Maira to fight back instead of giving up, the first step he asks her to complete is opening an individual bank account where her salary from their workplace would be deposited instead of the joint account with Salman, paving her path to financial independence and financial autonomy.

This is a valuable lesson for women watching at home: when you’re employed, why allow your oppressor to further dictate your life?

In the latest episode, Attir makes an intervention with her, informing her that she is engulfed by the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. He further creates awareness on how she could free herself from Salman by seeking help from people she can trust.

What is ‘Stockholm Syndrome’?

It is a psychological condition where hostages or victims of abduction develop feelings of empathy, sympathy, or even affection for their captors.. Addressing this phenomenon, Attir makes Maira understand how she has over the years come to accept her fate even when Salman has her captive with his manipulation and extreme fear. The drama can also help the audience understand the complexities of human psychology and the power dynamics that can lead to such emotional responses and identify if they are in a similar situation and are in need of help.

The Show Advocates Women’s Rights and Refutes Child Marriages!

Instead of romanticising child marriages, Mujhay Qabool Nahi is advocating for women’s rights and creating an awareness on what women in such situations can do. The protagonist Attir has time and again educated Maira on her various legal rights including the right to end her marriage through seeking ‘Khula’ in court.

In a recent post, Ahsan Khan also spoke about his character is standing against the odds and fighting against child marriages and forced marriages which are a common occurrence in the society.

Here’s How Pakistani Drama ‘Meray Humnasheen’ has Highlighted the Issue of Harassment in Educational Institutes

Little did the viewers of Pakistani drama ‘Meray Humnasheen’ realize that the series highlights one of the most important yet least talked about topics of harassment in educational institutes.

During her convocation ceremony (episode 34), Hiba Bukhari who plays Khajista gives a speech in which she talks about how students who come from villages or small areas into big and reputed institutes are a victim of harassment.

She says:

These medals, this ceremony, this applaud, it is not an appreciation but a slap. A slap on all those sick minds that are affected by territorial discrimination. That stupid mind thinks that children from underdeveloped areas have low IQs and are criminals, and can never be good students.

 

Respected guests, and dear students, when children like us come to these big institutions from small areas, we are targeted with territorial and educational discrimination. Today, the sound of these claps seems hollow to me. Because before this, it has been made to insult me, defame me, and put cheap blame on me.

 

I don’t need these medals, but it is my humble request the protection of the specified seats in my area is possible (seats that are reserved for students from such areas are protected) so that well-dressed children of the upper class don’t attack us. I don’t want to raise the curtains and degrade anyone that did what they did with me, but consider it my plea, my appeal, or a request, for God’s sake, clean educational institutes from discrimination so that in the future if any child goes with medals from here, then he or she doesn’t leave with a wounded soul like mine.

 

Let some star, some light, a lamp of hope light up in our eyes. Don’t snatch it from us.

 

Pakistan’s Drama Industry has Romanticized Abuse & Harassment of Women: Urwa Hocane

Wardah Noor, a student council batch representative from Lahore University of Management Sciences, shared that it is difficult for students to report cases and go through a long process while still being “mentally sound”. Her statement is just one out of hundreds of thousands.

“The issue here is not the lack of harassment committees in institutions but societal structures that make reporting of such incidents difficult,” Noor said. “We do take credit for introducing laws 10 years ago but that alone doesn’t guarantee support to survivors. Bringing evidence, following the entire procedure is strenuous … you have to provide therapy to survivors too.”

“There is a need to educate people so that they know what counts as sexual harassment,” she affirmed while pointing out practices of victim-blaming still pervasive in society.

Advocate and legal consultant Khadija Ali shared that civil law and criminal law exist in Pakistan for sexual harassment with the latter being Section 509 in the Pakistan Penal Code which is applicable in public places and wherever harassment takes place. However, students are mainly unaware or have little to no information about their rights.

Explaining the two laws she said, civil law is the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, of 2010 which is applicable in organizations. “Under this law, every organization has to have an inquiry committee to register sexual harassment complaints by students or employees,” she explained. “Organisations have to designate competent authority to mull penalties against the accused … moreover, we have ombudspersons in all four provinces where victims can file their complaints.”

Ali said students can now also file complaints under the act and the employee-employer relationship is not a mandatory requirement, however, it’s important to understand that it is civil law. “You can set a precedent for an entire university [by reporting and taking a stand] against harassment.” Says Maliha Husain, the executive director of Mehergarh: A Centre For Learning.

“Ahsan khan couldn’t find any of my controversies”, says Aiman Khan

Pakistani actress, Aiman Khan has been part of the many controversial headlines after the actress sat down for an interview with Voice Over Man aka Wajahat Rauf.

On the show, Wajahat Rauf asked Aiman a plethora of questions concerning other celebrities in the industry, during several segments of the show.

Khan answered many of those questions, which then turned into headlines. One of the question asked by him regarding a celebrity was “Should Ahsan Khan dance less?” to which Aiman looked at the camera and replied, “Ahsan Khan logo ki controversies na nikala karain”. 

Wajahat replied, “Apki bhi nikali hay?” to which Aimen replied, “Nahi” Wajahat replied, “Buch gaye yaar” to which Aiman smiled and said “Allah ka shukar hay. Khuda ki qasam bachi hoye hoon controversy say”.  Well Aiman, this interview was no less than controversial, after all no one is safe from controversy in the film industry.

In the same manner, when Aiman was questioned what she would suggest popular TikToker Jannat Mirza, she replied, “Jannat makeup kum kiya karo”. Jannat later on took a jibe at the star on her platform with the caption, “When someone w alot of makeup and surgeries on her face tells you not to put makeup”.

Aiman also mocked popular actress Ushna Shah to be less angrier

 

The star was also asked what she’d do if her husband was caught with someone else. She said she’ll kill him and the one he is caught with his own gun

Mathira’s Sister Feels Actors with Fair Skin Shouldn’t be Cast for Roles Set for Darker Skin Tones

During an interview, Pakistani model and host, Mathira’s sister Rose Mohammed stated that actors with fair complexion shouldn’t be hired for shoots with dark complexion requirements.

Mathira and Rose were invited to the Ahsan Khan talk show, where the two were asked several questions regarding celebrity image, parenthood, and work. Khan asked Rose if she had ever planned to work in the entertainment industry, to which the tv actor replied saying she didn’t.

She said she was a chubby baby, and later when she grew up, she was obese. She lost a lot of weight and eventually set foot in the entertainment industry. The host and the actress then discussed how there are limited roles in the industry for people who are bigger in size.

The two agreed that there should be more roles for bigger people in general. The actress then said just as there should be more roles for bigger people; there also should be roles for people with darker complexions.

The two also agreed that fair complexion actors are given preference in Pakistan’s film and TV drama industry. Following that, Rose revealed that she went for a photo shoot, and there the team applied negro base all over, which later received massive backlash. “I did a photo shoot where negro base was applied on my face. When the pictures were uploaded on the internet, they got a lot of backlashes. People said why a dark-complexion model was not used instead of me,” she said.

She then stated that if the requirement of the shoot is a dark complexion model, then they should be chosen. “Don’t cast a fair actor and then make them look dark by applying a base,” she said.

Humaima Malik Threatens Fan Pages with Legal Action after Doctored Images Surface on Social Media Fan Pages

Pakistani actress and model Humaima Malik has threatened fan pages for posting her indecent images. As per Malik, the images that have surfaced have been doctored.

She said in an Instagram story that the star will be forced to take legal action if fan pages do not remove these indecent images immediately. She said, “Some of my pictures have been circulating the internet badly (vulgarly) edited… it’s a shame how people can do this. I request those fan pages to take them down NOW before I take legal action.”

Just a few days ago, Malik was in Istanbul, Turkey, for IPPA awards. There, she suffered an appendix rupture and appealed to her fans to pray for her quick recovery.  The actress took it to her Instagram handle to inform her fans and highlight that God gave her a new life after successful appendix surgery.

Humaima Malik and brother Feroze Khan were invited to Ahsan Khan’s talk show, Time out with Ahsan Khan, in June, where the star’s brother raised many eyebrows for openly supporting polygamy.

Ahsan gave a statement to Feroze saying, “Men to abhi bacha tha mujhe itni jaldi shaadi nae karni chaiye thi (I was just a kid I should not have married so early),” to which Feroze replied, “No no, I should have married even sooner. And I feel because you get to learn so much from marriage, and because it’s Sunnah, people should marry more than once.” 

Humaima Malik has been part of some questionable Bollywood films earlier in her career. Other than doctored images, many other images from her films still circulate on social media from time to time.

Malik tied the knot with Shamoon Abbasi in 2009. However, the two parted ways within a year.

Ahsan Khan Proud to Become Goodwill Ambassador for National Commission on the Rights of Child

Pakistani actor,  Ahsan Khan is proud to become a goodwill ambassador for national commission on the rights of child (NCRC). 

The actor took it to social media to announce the news. He wrote on Instagram, “I am proud to be part of the great #ncrc initiative. Protecting the rights of our children is protecting our future. Neglect, cruelty, unfairness, injustice, and abuse damage the minds and hearts of children destined to take over our nation as they attain adulthood.”

The actor pointed out that it is immoral to leave the future of the country in the hands of those who have abused them. “It is profoundly irresponsible – and downright immoral – to leave the future in the hands of individuals whose souls have been damaged by the denial of love, respect, protection, education, dignity, and justice. Denying children and their basic rights makes us bad Muslims, bad Pakistanis and bad human beings,” he wrote.

Let alone the future, but children must be protected for the sake of humanity,”We must protect the rights of our children for the sake of humanity if not for the sake of our future. Pakistani actress, Juggun Kazim congratulated the star on Twitter. She wrote, “That’s amazing Ahsan!!! Proud of you”.

Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui also congratulated the star. He tweeted, “Well done . Much needed task.”

Complaint Filed in PEMRA Against Ahsan Khan’s Show on Express Tv for Animal Cruelty

Ahsan Khan’s famous talk show, Time Out with Ahsan Khan, has come under fire for using animals as props on the show. The animals have been appearing on the show for some time now, including parrots, rabbits, etc., for a segment where Ahsan punishes actors/actresses. The punishment is to hold animals in their laps.

Pakistani actress Maya Ali appeared in a recent episode. Her clip from the segment went viral on social media, where she was seen screaming and shouting as soon as Ahsan placed two rabbits beside her.

Crown Chambers, a Lahore-based law firm, had filed a complaint against Express Tv to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for using animals as props in the show after the show received massive backlash on social media.

Our Law Firm has filed a Complaint in PEMRA Council of Complaint against the use of Rabbit as Props in Show aired on Express Entertainment hosted by Actor Ahsan Khan. The said act violates Article 9 of the Constitution, Animal Cruelty Act 1890, and Judgment of Islamabad High Court.

On the matter, Ahsan Khan cleared the air. He gave a statement that said, “Let me clarify. These rabbits are basically pets, and the person who owns them brings them to the set. When they are on set, we make sure that they are well-fed and taken care of and are not facing any issues. They are not uncomfortable at all. The person whose pets they are keeps them indoors, and they are very easy to play with.”

He said that he is a pet lover and is careful on set with animals. “I myself am a pet lover,” said Ahsan. “I have dogs at home. I have cats. I also have parrots and hens, and they are all like my own children. We try to provide them with comfortable environments. So naturally, we are very careful with the animals – all of us on set.”

No more animals will appear in the show.

“My producer and I thought that if this is hurting people and they are not liking it, then we can avoid it. So we have cut out the segment in the last three to four episodes we’ve recorded.”
