The drama serial Muqaddar is about a feudal lord who forcibly marries a girl of his daughter’s age. ‘Toxic Masculinity is Nausiating, I am a Culprit too as I Watch Dramas like Habs & Fraud’ Nadia Jamil

Veteran actress Nadia Jamil recently opened up about toxic masculinity in Pakistani dramas as the popular drama Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi nears its finale.

While some actors have talked about the increase of toxic masculinity in recent dramas, some have ignored the conversation. Nadia Jamil also shared her two cents as she joined the bandwagon.

The actress voiced her concern about the series and scriptwriters have “set the bar so low” for our onscreen “heroes.” Even journalist Fifi Haroon took to Twitter to tweet her thoughts about the drama by calling it “well-developed.”

She further elaborated that young naive girls such as Mahek (Dur-e-Fishan Saleem) are bound to fall in love with men like Shamsher (Danish Taimoor), and dismiss their red flags when they start “behaving better.”

In response, Nadia Jamil pointed out a number of misogynistic acts carried out by the lead character for which he was never held accountable in the show.

She wrote:

Um, he tortures her father and brother and has them locked up. Kidnaps her, humiliates and forces her to marry him against her will, then imprisons her in his house and loses his sh** when she visits her father. He also continues to harass her family and insults the life out of her.

Jamil further added that the majority of Pakistani writers dub toxic and abusive male characters as “heroes,” whereas that is not true in real life.

“In real life, men are decapitating women and beating them to death. At least in this drama, he [Shamsher] didn’t burn her [Mahek] or beat her to a pulp. It’s just that we set the bar so low when we are writing our heroes. Also, now the Shamsher’s wicked father is all remorseful and giving himself up to the police too,” she added

Later, a fan requested the actor to stop contributing to the viewership of such dramas that write toxic men into lauded heroes.

In response, Jamil confessed to playing her part in promoting such narratives. “Toxic masculinity is nauseating. I am a culprit as I watch many dramas propagating it. Even in Habs and Fraud, the men are so controlling and misogynistic,”

5 Pakistani Dramas With Strong Female Lead Characters

Pakistani television industry is an institution that has given rise to superb talent and embraced emerging actors with all its heart. Giving us engaging story lines, character- driven plots and social issues that otherwise shunned by our society, Pakistani drama industry has evolved drastically. Dramas like Udaari, Meri Guriya, Cheekh, Khuda Mera Bhi Hai, Besharam, Digest Writer, Alif, are all dramas with complex plots, outstanding actors and beautiful direction.

However, this trend is going down with an onslaught of weaker plots mainly highlighting tragedies of women. Even in 2019, it’s surprising to see females in ‘bichari’ roles, wallowing in their miseries, crying over toxic males, going after married men, coercing them into falling in love with them or plotting revenge for no reason at all. There is more to women than that and older dramas like Dhoop Kinaray, Alpha Bravo Charlie, Tanhaiyaan seemed to have grasped the concept of stronger, independent women quite beautifully.

Some of the strong female-centric tales coming out of the industry that have stuck with us and deserve all the attention and praise have been listed here. We, at WOW 360 have curated a list of 5 Pakistani female lead characters in dramas that are the epitome of independence, and self-respect, and raising voice against injustice.

1. Mannat in Cheekh (Saba Qamar)

Even though the ending of Cheekh wasn’t as satisfying for the viewers, Saba Qamar’s character as Mannat stood out throughout and is worth mentioning here. She was a true example of the modern, independent woman who refused to be pulled down by society.

She was fierce, outspoke, bold, confident and had full faith in her abilities. Mannat was a woman who was outspoken, independent and confident in her abilities.  A character that reflected fearlessness, power, and the will to attain justice, her courage was a memorable aspect of the drama.

2. Kashaf in Zindagi Gulzar Hai (Sanam Saeed)

No such list would be complete without mentioning Kashaf Murtaza’s character! An epitome of steadfastness, perseverance, self-respect, fierce independence; these qualities were monumental.  Back in 2013, Kashaf Murtaza’s character was strikingly different than other female leads in TV dramas and has stuck with us till today. The character is true prowess of Sanam Saeed exceptional acting skills.

Even though was ungrateful and thankless initially, she transformed and realised God has a reason and a way for every mishap in life. Her marriage to Zaroon did change her perception about men, it was refreshing to see her being able to retain her independence and strength even after marriage.

3. Shehnaz in Alpha Bravo Charlie (Shahnaz Khwaja)

The classic Army drama Alpha Bravo Charlie, gave us the iconic Shehnaz! The character inspired a generation of females to not give in to stereotypes, to dream the impossible and have the courage to make unconventional decisions in life unapologetically.

A character way ahead of its time, Shehnaz was bold, confident, yet modest and humble. People adore her independence and her perspective towards life till today!

4. ‘Safeena’ in Meri Guriya (Sonya Hussain)

Safeena, played by Sonya Hussain in the drama Meri Guriya, is a character we simply cannot ignore. Safeena’s character inspired us to stand up for our rights and fight for justice till the end.

A story of unwavering faith and courage, Safeena’s character was beautifully portrayed by Sonya Hussain. Her exceptional acting skills were surely put to test which she passed with flying colors. The way she portrayed pain, anguish, anger, hatred, all in one scene is commendable.

5. Ayesha Khan in Khuda Mera Bhi Hai

A TV drama that changed the game and set the bar high for other productions was the heart-touching story of Ayesha Khan in Khuda Mera Bhi Hai. The drama follows Ayesha’s strong-willed character and her fight and struggle to provide her transgender child fair treatment and equal opportunities in the society.

Earlier on, PEMRA has conveyed directives to TV channels to not air objectionable dramas, content based on indecent dressing, caressing, bed scenes, and gestures, sensitive/controversial plots, and unnecessary detailing of the event(s) which are highly disturbing, distressing for the viewers. Additionally, against the commonly accepted standards of decency.

The authority indicated that even then, they have received numerous complaints from the general public on Pakistan Citizen Portal (PCP) and media/WhatsApp groups. The statement said, “A considerable stratum of society believes that dramas are not depicting a true picture of Pakistani society. Hugs/caress scenes/extramartial relations, vulgar/bold dressing, bed scenes and intimacy of married couple are being glamorized in utter disregard to Islamic teachings and culture of Pakistan society. ”

In recent years, since the revival of cinema and tv, authorities have been alert on the kind of content and intimate scenes being produced and, of course, aired to the masses on big and small screens. While some may reason this restriction with religious and cultural values, it dramatically limits the ground to display genuine human emotions for filmmakers and drama writers.

Some may also believe that the restrictions imposed on artists limit creative expression, which further hinders the growth of the entertainment industry. Pakistani film industry already lacks significantly in many areas in the field compared to Bollywood, prospering in our neighboring country, India.

Ahsan Khan’s famous talk show, Time Out with Ahsan Khan, has come under fire for using animals as props on display. The animals have been appearing on the show for some time now, including parrots, rabbits, etc., for a segment where Ahsan punishes actors/actresses. The punishment is to hold animals in their laps.

Sharmila Faruqui Lashes Out at Ayeza Khan and Here’s Why

The ongoing Pakistani drama titled ‘Laapata’ is currently doing rounds around the country because of the exceptional storyline and star-studded cast.

The cast of the drama includes Ali Rehman Khan, Sarah Khan, Gohar Rasheed, and others. Unexpectedly, both the lead actresses Sarah Khan and Ayeza Khan are sharing the small screen without stealing each other’s limelight and making the serial eye candy for their fans and followers around the world.

The story of the drama mainly revolves around three cousins named Shams, Geeti, and Falak who come from a middle-class family and are stuck in a love triangle. Because of their extraordinary performances, the actors are getting praise from the viewers and they just cannot get over their chemistry together.

However recently, PPP politician Sharmila Farooqi has expressed displeasure over Ayeza Khan’s most talked-about controversial scene from the drama.

In the scene, it can be seen that Ayeza Khan’s character, Geeti, who is also a famous TikToker is making false harassment allegation on a shopkeeper when she is forced to pay her dues. When she started making a video of the shopkeeper saying that he is harassing her, the shopkeeper got scared and forgave the debt.

The scene caught the attention of Sharmila Farooqui and she didn’t shy away to talk about it on social media.

She took to her social media accounts and wrote:

“Appalled to see a clip from drama serial ‘Laapata’ where Geeti played by @ayezakhan.ak is seen blackmailing a shopkeeper with false harassment claims. Trust me, harassment is real, it’s hurtful and just destroys you. Women In our country have been going through hell for crimes against them.. such Pakistani dramas which show extreme insensitivity towards such issues need to take responsibility for such poor depiction of real-time issues being faced by women across the country. The general public idolizes dramas & the stars working in them. What message are you sending across to them? Our country has seen an unfortunate surge in horrendous crimes against women and humanity at large. This only makes it worse…. P.s I love @ayezakhan.ak otherwise for her worthwhile performances in other dramas.”

As soon as she posted it, her fans and followers appreciated her for raising the issue and requested the writers to avoid writing about such sensitive issues.

Today when women need fair treatment and justice when it comes to gender based violence, this show of deception by women is wrong and to portray women in this light on a mass scale needs to be considered with more sensitivity.
