5 Pakistani Dramas With Strong Female Lead Characters

Pakistani television industry is an institution that has given rise to superb talent and embraced emerging actors with all its heart. Giving us engaging story lines, character- driven plots and social issues that otherwise shunned by our society, Pakistani drama industry has evolved drastically. Dramas like Udaari, Meri Guriya, Cheekh, Khuda Mera Bhi Hai, Besharam, Digest Writer, Alif, are all dramas with complex plots, outstanding actors and beautiful direction.

However, this trend is going down with an onslaught of weaker plots mainly highlighting tragedies of women. Even in 2019, it’s surprising to see females in ‘bichari’ roles, wallowing in their miseries, crying over toxic males, going after married men, coercing them into falling in love with them or plotting revenge for no reason at all. There is more to women than that and older dramas like Dhoop Kinaray, Alpha Bravo Charlie, Tanhaiyaan seemed to have grasped the concept of stronger, independent women quite beautifully.

Some of the strong female-centric tales coming out of the industry that have stuck with us and deserve all the attention and praise have been listed here. We, at WOW 360 have curated a list of 5 Pakistani female lead characters in dramas that are the epitome of independence, and self-respect, and raising voice against injustice.

1. Mannat in Cheekh (Saba Qamar)

Even though the ending of Cheekh wasn’t as satisfying for the viewers, Saba Qamar’s character as Mannat stood out throughout and is worth mentioning here. She was a true example of the modern, independent woman who refused to be pulled down by society.

She was fierce, outspoke, bold, confident and had full faith in her abilities. Mannat was a woman who was outspoken, independent and confident in her abilities.  A character that reflected fearlessness, power, and the will to attain justice, her courage was a memorable aspect of the drama.

2. Kashaf in Zindagi Gulzar Hai (Sanam Saeed)

No such list would be complete without mentioning Kashaf Murtaza’s character! An epitome of steadfastness, perseverance, self-respect, fierce independence; these qualities were monumental.  Back in 2013, Kashaf Murtaza’s character was strikingly different than other female leads in TV dramas and has stuck with us till today. The character is true prowess of Sanam Saeed exceptional acting skills.

Even though was ungrateful and thankless initially, she transformed and realised God has a reason and a way for every mishap in life. Her marriage to Zaroon did change her perception about men, it was refreshing to see her being able to retain her independence and strength even after marriage.

3. Shehnaz in Alpha Bravo Charlie (Shahnaz Khwaja)

The classic Army drama Alpha Bravo Charlie, gave us the iconic Shehnaz! The character inspired a generation of females to not give in to stereotypes, to dream the impossible and have the courage to make unconventional decisions in life unapologetically.

A character way ahead of its time, Shehnaz was bold, confident, yet modest and humble. People adore her independence and her perspective towards life till today!

4. ‘Safeena’ in Meri Guriya (Sonya Hussain)

Safeena, played by Sonya Hussain in the drama Meri Guriya, is a character we simply cannot ignore. Safeena’s character inspired us to stand up for our rights and fight for justice till the end.

A story of unwavering faith and courage, Safeena’s character was beautifully portrayed by Sonya Hussain. Her exceptional acting skills were surely put to test which she passed with flying colors. The way she portrayed pain, anguish, anger, hatred, all in one scene is commendable.

5. Ayesha Khan in Khuda Mera Bhi Hai

A TV drama that changed the game and set the bar high for other productions was the heart-touching story of Ayesha Khan in Khuda Mera Bhi Hai. The drama follows Ayesha’s strong-willed character and her fight and struggle to provide her transgender child fair treatment and equal opportunities in the society.

Touching domestic abuse, divorce and transgender rights in our society, this is an unforgettable tale of love, loss and justice.

Bilquis Edhi, The Compassionate Hand that Never Stops Giving

Born on the 14th of August 1947, Bilquis Edhi was the wife of the late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi. She had earned herself the title of ‘Mother of Pakistan’ because of her unfailing gift of giving, compassionate nature and her immense work in giving back to society.

Over the past 46 years, Bilquis Edhi served the nation and her undying support, kindness and unselfish ways has elevated her status for the entire nation. Bilquis Edhi headed the “Jhula project” of Edhi Foundation where they give shelter and raise orphans and unwanted children.

Bilquis Bano Edhi also held the honor of the prestigious ‘Hilal-e-Imtiaz’ Award, and the ‘1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service’. She also received the ‘Lenin Peace Prize’.

Edhi Foundation charity, which Bilquis Edhi contributed to and looked after full time, runs many services in Pakistan including the hospital and emergency service in Karachi.

Bilquis Edhi’s Early Years & Background

Not very good in studies, Edhi joined the nurses training course at the Edhi Nurses Training Centre at the age of 13 or 14, while she was still in the 8th grade. She got married to Abdul Sattar Edhi in the April of 1966. She has been associated with the Edhi foundation ever since and hasn’t looked back. Under the team leadership of Abdul Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi, the organization that initially aimed to provide relief and support to the poor and needy, and has turned into one of the biggest, internationally recognized relief organization.

At the time of marriage, Edhi only had a broken car and a small dispensary to his name- even that time, with such limited resources, people would trust their kids to them and Bilquis Edhi would take care of them.

Bilquis Edhi’s responsibilities included mainly to look after the women’s section and the adoption care facility. Her two daughters worked closely with her while she travelled all across the country to oversee the Edhi facilities and give suggestions for improvement.

Bilquis Edhi Nominated for the Mother Teresa Award

Bilquis Edhi was selected for Mother Teresa Memorial International Award in 2015 for giving shelter to Geeta, the differently-abled Indian girl who was left back in Pakistan.

The Award was bestowed by the Harmony Foundation Board. The foundation’s chairman Abraham Mathai said the following:

In view of the noble and humanitarian act of sheltering our dear Geeta, a deaf-and-mute woman who had accidentally crossed into Pakistan, the Harmony Foundation Board has unanimously decided to honour Karachi-based Bilquis Bano of the Edhi Foundation.

Bilquis Edhi has also been honoured along with internationally recognized humanitarian social aid provider Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

The Edhi foundation had take care of Geeta for over a decade until she safely returned to India.

Child Adoption Centre & Childcare Services- The Jhula Project

The Edhi child adoption centre and childcare services dates back to 1949. Bilquis Edhi was supervising the caring and feeding of the babies who are mostly either orphans, or illegitimate, unwanted children that people leave in cradles placed outside all Edhi Centres, across the country. The purpose is to leave the abandoned and illegitimate babies in these cradles- Edhi Foundation’s “Jhula Project”, who can then be united with good families who would raise them with love and care.

Mostly couples who are struggling with children tend to adopt these babies but are first interviewed by Bilquis Edhi and must fulfill a specific criteria for adoption. The criteria is that the couple must have been married for over 10-12 years and is still childless- prospective father’s salary must be sufficient to support a child and wife, he should not be an alcoholic or a drug addict. The age of the mother must be less than 50 and the couple must own a house.

Her foundation doesn’t give children to couples who keep changing their house – keep moving from one place to another. Kids who are physically or mentally disabled are cared for by Edhi Foundation.

Edhi Foundation has over 4,000 applications in hand for child adoption. A thorough screening is done by Bilquis Edhi herself before the baby is handed over to a suitable family.

Edhi Foundation is handing over more than 250 babies or children for adoption on a yearly basis. More than 23,320 babies and children have been provided to the childless couples and families uptil now.

5 Exercises You Must Follow to Get Your Body Lehenga Ready This Wedding Season

When we say getting your body lehenga ready, we mean focusing on specific areas of the body via an effective exercise routine along with a controlled, healthy diet. 

Just make sure your goals are realistic and achievable- with a little bit of motivation, dedication and consistency, you can gradually reach your fitness goal.

1. Slender Torso Exercises

Knee to Elbow Crunches

Knee to elbow crunches target the entire torso, abdomen and core.

  • Lie flat on the ground, raising your legs at a 90-degree angle and place your hands behind your head.
  • Raise the right elbow to touch your left knee and alternate this movement.

If you are a beginner , you can start with three sets and work your way up to completing five sets each. 

Flutter Kicks & Superman
  • Lie down flat on your back & place your hands by your side.
  • Raise the leg repeatedly in a scissor-like motion for 30 seconds.
  • Repeat flutter kicks in sets of three with 45-second intervals.

The flutter kicks target your lower abdominals when you start feeling a burning sensation while the superman exercise helps target the love-handles and small of the back.

Sitting Twists

Sitting twists will help you get that perfect waist to flaunt your slender frame in that wedding dress.

  • Sit down with back straight and knees slightly away from chest.
  • Twist the upper body until the elbows touch the ground.
  • Alternative this movement at a fast pace.

 Must be repeated 20 times in sets of 5 for effective results.

7-Day Fat Burning Cardio Workout

Push-Ups

Get into a push-up position & slowly bend your arms to the ground and push yourself back up.

Pushups help with deltoids, triceps and biceps. If you can’t do a full push, start with taking support of your knees and slowly work your way up.

Arm Circles
  1. Stand up with your back straight & raise your arms to 180 degrees.
  2. Rotate your arms in small circles by clenching your fists.
  3. Must be repeated in both clockwise and anti-clockwise circles.

Must be repeated 25 times in sets of 4. 

3. Toned Legs, Thighs & Butt

If you are planning on donning the mermaid styled lehenga, that is slightly fitted to the lower part of your body,  you can aim to attain that hour-glass figure to enhance the look. Leg lifts & Sumo squats can help you do that.

How To Lose Thigh Fat In 2 Weeks

Leg Lifts
  1. Lie down on your side & Rest your head on your arms.
  2. Keeping your leg straight while raising it up and down.

Leg lifts must be repeated 40 times in sets of 3. 

Sumo Squats
  1. Stand with your legs and shoulders in line & point your toes at 180 degrees.
  2. Squat down as though you are going to sit in a chair & hold this position for 5 seconds.

Sumo squats target the inner thighs by tightening the quadriceps muscles.

Repeat 20 times with sets of 3. 

4. Don’t forget to work on the Double Chin

Remember, it’s not just the body, but the overall weight loss and toning that helps your achieve that perfect look. Therefore, don’t forget to tone your face too. Side to side tilts and back & forth tilts can help get rid of that stubborn double chin fat.

Here is how you can do these exercises:

Side to Side Tilts

Slowly tilt your head to the right and hold for 5 seconds & then slowly tilt your head to the left and hold for 5 seconds.

Must be continued 10 times in sets of 3. 

Back and Forth Tilts

Ensure your back is straight and tilt your head back and hold for 5 seconds. Breath in and then tilt your head forward and breath out.

This simple workout should be repeated 10 times in sets of 3 with 30-second intervals.

5. To lose overall weight

To lose overall weight you can do 30 minutes of cardio (running, walking, jogging, cycling) for at least 5 times a week. You can add this to your above mentioned workout routine to burn some extra calories and fat, and amp up the whole process.

You can even try power yoga, Zumba or even pilates if you are not a fan of cardio or working out in general.

5 Pakistani Females Who Deserve to be Celebrated This Defence Day 2021

Defence Day or Youm-e- Difa is celebrated every year on the 6th of September in Pakistan as a national day to commemorate the sacrifices made by Pakistani soldiers in defending our borders. Be it the armed forces, the airforce or the naval forces, without the selfless sacrifices of the our ‘qoum k jawaan’, (male and female both)  Pakistan would not have been what is it today- it would not have even come to life.

While the sacrifices of the men in the forces are countless and can never be forgotten, WOW 360 decided to pay homage and a salute to our nation’s brave women serving in the forces currently, this Defence Day. Fighting neck to neck with men too defend our nation, these super women are proof that females are resilient, tough and just as courageous as men.

Here are five Pakistani females who deserve to be celebrated this Defence Day 2021. The nation is proud of you all.

1. Begum Rana Liaquat Ali

In the year 1948, first lady of Pakistan,  Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali started the women voluntary seervice to assist and support in logistics and medical for Pakistan Armed Forces battling the Indo-Pakistani war of 1947.

This is what paved way and led to the formation of a women’s unit in the Pakistan Army Corps of Medical. Had it not been for Begum Rana’s efforts, females probably would still be struggling to make it to the armed forces in Pakistan, since they aren’t considered tough and smart enough. She even attempted to introduce a combat training program for women.

2. Ayesha Farooq

Flight Lieutenant Ayesha Farooq became the first Pakistani female fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force, back in 2013.

Hailing from Qaimpur, Bahawalpur District, she topped her final exams and qualified as the first and only Pakistani female fighter pilot.  Ayesha now flies missions in a Chinese-made Chengdu J-7 fighter jet in Squadron 20, with her 24 male colleagues.

Ayesha’s father passed away when she was three years old, her mother raised her and her sister all by herself. She made them tough, determined and how to fight hard in order achieve their dreams. She was a confident young girl who was into sports and athletics since childhood.

3. Marium Mukhtiar

Marium Mukhtiar graduated as a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in 2007 along with seven other female Pakistanis who also graduated as pilot officers. She acquired her early education from Karachi. She joined the Pakistan Air Force on May 6, 2011,  in 132 GD Pilot course.

On November 24th 2015, in a routine training flight with her instructor Saqib Abbasi, flying officer Marium Mukhtiar’s jet developed a fault and crashed at Kandian area near Mianwali. Even though Marium and her co-pilot ejected before the aircraft crashed, she suffered fatal injuries and lost her life.

23rd March 2016, the government of Pakistan posthumously honoured Marium Mukhtiar with Tamgha-e-Basalat (Medal of Good Conduct).

4. Shahida Malik

Shahida Malik broke barriers and earned the rank of first female Major General in 2002, in a time in the 20th century, when females were restrained from taking part in active duty combat operations.

However, a small unit of women soldiers was deployed in hostile areas to assist in the medical operations only.

5. Nigar Johar

Brigadier Nigar Johar, became the first woman to command in Pakistan Army’s history. She is Pakistan Army’s First Woman To Hold Lieutenant General Rank. She was bestowed with the command of multidisciplinary tertiary care hospital, in 2015.

She then became the third woman in Pakistan to reach the major general rank, in 2017. Nigar Johar hails from the Army Medical Corps.

Johar has also been appointed as a Major General, Vice Principal of Army Medical College Rawalpindi.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in Women: Symptoms, Causes & Myths

There are certain medical condition that demand a lifestyle change and once diagnosed, you’re more curious to learn as much as you can about it. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is one such medical condition.

Women of reproductive age can develop PCOS at any point of time in their lives- there is no specific age or timeline for it. But early diagnosis and treatment, along with gradual weight loss can prevent it from aggravating and causing serious health issues such as type 2 diabetes or cardiac disease.

What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal and metabolism that is more common in women of reproductive age, and affects their health adversely. Women suffering from PCOS experience irregular or prolonged menstrual periods. They can, but not always, experience increased androgen (male hormone) levels. The ovaries, responsible for reproduction in females often develops fluid collection (follicles) and are unable to release an egg.

The symptoms for the condition can include acne, excessive and sudden weight gain, irregular menstrual cycle, thinning hair etc.

Symptoms

Even though there is no specific time limit or age for PCOS, early signs and symptoms start during the time of first menstrual cycle,also known as puberty. Often time PCOS develops at a later stage such as late 20s or early 30s, and one of the major reasons for that is substantial weight gain.

Irregular periods

Some females often experience periods twice in a month, some don’t have them for 2 to 4 months in a row while some experience more them for over 10 days at once in a month. Polycystic ovaries

If your ovaries are enlarged, this mostly means they contain fluid or follicles and this in turn means ovaries failing to fertilize the egg.

Unfortunately, PCOS has no cure, however overweight and obese women can control their levels of hormone by doing low resistance workout to gradually shed weight. A wide range of treatment options are available to help prevent potential problems.

Lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating, regular exercise,Dairy free and gluten free diet also help with controlling PCOS. This improve the way your body uses insulin and, hence, regulates hormone levels.

Birth control pills regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce androgen levels and is thus a good treatment option, if you don’t plan on getting pregnant.

Myth 2- PCOS is an Uncommon Condition

Research shows that five to 10 percent of women in the U.S. of reproductive age experience PCOS. This calculates to over 5 million women, making it one of the most common hormonal endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age-so yes Myth# 2 proves to be wrong.

Causes

2. Elevated level of androgen

The ovaries start producing abnormally increased levels of androgen- male hormones, resulting in acne and hirsutism .

3. Low-grade inflammation

Low grade inflammation is when white blood cells production substances to fight infections in the body.

Research has proven that females who have PCOS have this inflammation that stimulates ovaries to produce excessive androgens leading to blood vessel and heart problems.

4. Elevated Insulin levels

The hormone produced in the pancreas which permits cells to use sugar is insulin. Sugar is the primary energy supply of a human’s body.

When cells becomes resistant insulin, it leads to an increased level of blood sugar levels leading to body producing more insulin. Excess production of insulin can increased production of androgen hindering the process of ovulation and thus- fertility in women.

Mask acne can be anything, from acne and pimples around your nose, jawline, cheeks, to redness or irritation around that area.

Maskne, or skin breakouts after wearing masks for a few hours, occur due to clogging of pores caused by skin oils, sweat, yeast and bacteria trapped under the skin, said Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Houston, Texas, quotes The New York Times. She further went on to say that face masks cause irritation by rubbing against the skin constantly; this damages the protective barrier of the skin.

Pink Himalayan salt is a pink-colored salt which is extracted from the Khewra Salt Mine- one of the oldest and largest salt mines in the world, located near the Himalayas in Pakistan.

How to Apply Hair Oil the Right Way for Effective Results?

Tired of dull, damaged, brittle hair? We all are! Constant weather changes, rising levels of stress, an excessively busy routine with zero time for self-care, unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits, there are numerous things that we do on a daily basis that add to our hair damage, drastically.

Over washing the hair, brushing them vigorously or letting them go dry for too long- our hair does undergo a lot of trauma as a result. What comes to our rescue then, however, is ‘Hair Oiling‘!

There is no better cure for dehydrated hair then simply oiling your hair and scalp, once a week, to regain the lost nourishment and strength! Hair oils have been used for generations to stimulate hair growth and treat a number of hair problems. But are you oiling your hair the right way?

Here are 5 simple and easy steps to oil your hair the right way, and get healthy, lustrous long locks.

Step 1: Select The Right Oil for Your Hair & Scalp

It’s important to use the correct oil for your hair type! Carrier oils can be used alone or be mixed with other oils. Coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil are a few examples. How to know which hair oil suits your hair type? If you and have an oily or greasy scalp, you must use lighter oils such as coconut, jojobaba etc. However, if your scalp is dry. you must used heavier oils for hydration and moisture- such as castor oil and olive oil among others. 

Tip for hair growth and strength:  Mix castor oil and coconut oil in equal ratio in a bottle and add four Vitamin E capsules’ gel/oil to the mixture. Let the mixture sit in a bottle overnight and apply, indefinitely. Use this twice a week and witness the magic right before your eyes. Castor Oil helps with hair thinning while coconut oil helps helps make your hair thick and luscious.

Note: You must conduct a patch-test before applying any oil to your scalp in order to prevent any allergic reactions.

Step 2: Use Warm Oil

Before applying, heat the oil for a few seconds until it becomes lukewarm. Applying warm oil to your hair leads to a more soothing and effective massage since the oil seeps deeper through your hair cuticles and scalp.

Step 3: Massage Your Scalp in Circular Motion 

Use a light, gentle hand and massage the oil thoroughly for a few minutes, in circular motion. During massage, try to work your way all over the scalp for a good 15 to 20 minutes. Once the scalp is covered, move towards the end and tips of your hair. Make sure you’re gentle and not vigorous with your hair, as that can lead to breakage.

If it helps, try to part your hair in smaller portions for full coverage. Make sure NOT to comb your hair right after the as the hair is vulnerable and hence, can break easily.

Scalp massages relieve stress and improve blood circulation to hair roots, cuticles and follicles, promoting faster hair growth. 

Step 4: Wrap A Warm Cloth Around Your Hair

Tie your hair into a light, low bun and without combing, wrap a warm cloth around your hair. This will help open up pores and let the oil seep in well into the scalp and roots.

DO NOT tie your hair up in a tight pony tail or bun, to prevent breakage. 

Step 5: Rinse It Off Well

After you are done applying, wash your hair after a few hours. Make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly with normal water. Neither too hot, not too cold. Extreme temperatures can damage hair immediately after massage. Make sure to dry it well after.

Do Not let the oil sit in your hair for too long, and Do Not apply too much oil either. Less is more, when it comes to oiling your hair the right way!
