Karachi University Students Design Movable Flood-Proof House

Architecture students of Karachi University have designed a movable flood-proof house to resolve one of the many issues the country faces with infrastructure during floodings.

Accordingly, 1/3 of the country is under water and thousands of homes have been destroyed leaving millions homeless. This house will not only provide affordable shelter to the families but can also float on water.

The house is priced from PKR 50,000 to PKR 100,00 and is eco-friendly as well as mobile. This means it can be easily relocated to a safer location when the area is on high alert due to flooding.

The material used is bamboo sticks, floor mats and recycled plastic bottles. This is brilliant as it will not only reduce waste but also ensure there is no further damage and the best part is that it will not affect the inhabitant’s lifestyle in any negative way.

KU’s Engineering Department has declared this model practical and has asked to have it executed as soon as possible.

 Visual Studies department lecturer Wajiha Siddiqui remarked that Pakistan will experience the consequences of global warming in the form of natural disasters, which is why it is essential for the country to be prepared for more floods in the next 30 to 50 years.

Pakistan is in dire need of better and safer infrastructure and projects that will help the countrymen and the survivors get back on their feet.

Angelina Jolie to Visit Flood-Hit Pakistan: Reports

Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie is reportedly due to visit the flood-hit country of Pakistan. Jolie is not just one of the most popular actresses around the globe, she is also a filmmaker, humanitarian, and the United States (UN) Special Envoy.

Reportedly, the visit will be to see the damage done by the unprecedented monsoon rains, and floods, and to carry out relief activities and rescue operations.

Ever since the floods have hit, almost 1/3 of the country has been displaced, leaving over a thousand dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.

While other countries have promised to provide aid and money to help Pakistan get back on its feet, citizens of the country including its stars are doing their best.

However, many are still inaccessible and unable to get food, shelter, medical attention, and the help they need. Moreover, reports of children dying from starvation, and people passing from water-borne diseases or snake/scorpion bites are also making rounds.

Women are finding it difficult to find a safe and private spot to go to the bathroom, they are scared that while doing so, a man may try to take advantage of them or the children as there is no more ‘veil’ in between.

This visit would not be Angelina Jolie’s first to Pakistan. The humble woman visited in 2010 after the disastrous quakes and floods hit the country causing major devastation. She personally met the families of survivors, heard their stories and consoled them.

Pakistan Floods: “We Need to Rise to the Challenge” Mehwish Hayat Urges Helping Survivors & Rebuilding

Pakistani superstar Mehwish Hayat has recently been seen on TV talking about the floods in Pakistan.

Hayat appeared on Sky News and BBC to appeal for donations and revealed that she is closely working with Penny Appeal for the cause.

That’s not all, the ‘London Nahi Jaunga’ actor also took it on social media to announce that just talking about the calamity will not change anything and that she feels like she needs to do more.

During her interview with Sky News, she shared:
“One-third of the country has drowned under water, 50 million people are displaced, 1,500 deaths that we know of but there are so many areas that people and help agencies are not being able to access to get to the people who really need help right now.”

She added that over 70,000 pregnant women are expected to deliver next month and they do not have access to clean water, clothes, or food. Hayat said that they have “lost everything” and that these people will now have to rebuild everything from scratch.

“I really wanted to do something about it and I felt that I needed to do more than just tweet and that’s why I’m working with the charity organization Penny Appeal to get help wherever needed. Penny Appeal is on the ground in the 13 most affected areas and according to a recent report out of 160 districts, 72 have been declared as disaster zones by the government. You can imagine the scale of the damage, the disaster, and the fact that so much help is needed on every front.”Moreover, she announced to personally visit the flood-hit areas herself and speak to the people to try and find out how they need to be assisted.

“In this time we really need the world and all the viewers to rise to the challenge and help people in need because I believe that if you save one life, you save the world, and with your little help, whatever little you can spare, that can help save thousands of lives. Right now, they don’t even have basic medical aid, the women who will be delivering will be needing medical care, help, and assistance,” she requested.

Furthermore, she also informed viewers about waterborne diseases and infections that are possibly waiting to break out, not to forget the upcoming winter season which will also be a major challenge.

“For these areas, winter is actually one of the toughest months of the year, and imagine they don’t even have shelter, the camps don’t have the tents for them to sleep at night or have any sort of normality to their life and I think a lot is needed to be done. It’s $10 billion worth of damage as per the government estimates, so it will take time to get back to any normality, it’s going to take years,” she said.

Similarly, on BBC, the Ms Marvel star requested individuals to donate food, clean water, sustainable food, and other items that will help the flood survivors get back on their feet.

TW: Social Media Enraged Over Gang Rape of Flood Victim Lured with Promise of Ration

Floods in Pakistan have caused massive damage to not only the infrastructure but also the physical and mental well-being of the victims.

Account details of the survivors have been surfacing with goosebumps giving details.

One such account came forth about a young girl who was kidnapped and gang-raped by a rickshaw driver and his accomplice 2 days before they let her go.

Identified as Khalid and Dilsher, the accused have been taken into custody. The victim shared that the two lured her in by offering ration, then drugged her and raped her. She recorded her plight in a video that is now going viral over social media platforms.

“The victim and her family said the girl was kidnapped by a rickshaw driver and his accomplice,” said a police officer. The victim claims she was drugged, after which she was gang-raped.

“I was going to take vegetables where I was told that I would be given ration,” she added. The girl said that rickshaw drivers named Khalid and Dil Sher Macchi sexually abused her.

“They promised her to give her ration and relief goods provided by the government and welfare organizations for the flood victims. But they took her to their hideout, where they kept the girl for two days and raped her. The girl returned to the family after two days and shared her ordeal,” said the official quoting the girl’s family.

Sindh Minister for Women Development Shehla Raza has urged the police to arrest all the culprits. Minister has assured full legal support will be provided to the girl and her family.

Netizens are furious over the account as top celebrities such as Ayesha Omar and others have penned down their disappointment and anger.

“Is there any end to the shamelessness? Just abuse, steal, loot, violate, torture, and suppress. On every level. I don’t even know what to feel. Or what to think,” wrote Ayesha Omar on her Instagram account.

She went on to comment, “How can we change all this? Every day, I sit and ponder over this question. What is it that I as a Pakistani woman could do to change this dark situation?”

As Pakistan continues to find stability and a ray of hope in chaotic times, world leaders have raised their voices for the nation and its people.

They’ve boldly pointed out that Pakistan contributes less than 1% of carbon emissions, yet is one of the top 10 countries most affected by climate change.

These leaders have asked rich countries that are responsible to step up and help the 33 million flood victims who have been displaced.

Moreover, British MP Claudia Webbe has demanded of the international community immediately cancel Pakistan’s debt as Islamabad (the capital) is facing hazards of climate change due to wrongs done by rich countries.

In her tweet, Claudia Webbe said inflation in Pakistan has reached an all-time high at 27%. She writes:

“Pakistan’s international debt should be immediately cancelled – they should instead be given reparations for the climate crisis caused,”

She is not the only one, Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has blamed the world’s top carbon-producing industrialized nations for the unprecedented flood disaster in Pakistan.

“Let’s be clear: the Pakistani people did not do this to Pakistan — we all did, and the high-emitting nations are most responsible,“ Bainimarama said in a tweet on Tuesday as he highlighted the dangers of global greenhouse gas emissions.

“Unless we end our species’ addiction to fossil fuels, every country in the world will remain in the crosshairs of the climate breakdown,“ he added.

Pakistan, like Fiji, is among the lowest contributors to global carbon emissions, yet remains highly vulnerable to climate change.

On the other hand, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also urged the international community to come forward and help Pakistan.

“The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids. More than 1000 people have been killed – with millions more lives shattered. This colossal crisis requires urgent, collective action to help the Government & people of Pakistan in their hour of need,” the UN chief said in a video message.

Understanding the Numbers

While some leaders and countries, as well as Pakistani and international NGOs and organizations, are doing whatever it takes to help, it is important to understand the numbers on the table.

Firstly, 33 million Pakistanis are now homeless, Australia has a total population of 25.69 million, this means that 1/3 of Pakistan (or a complete country like Australia) is now homeless, have no food or shelter, and lack basic necessities, not to forget are exposed to water-borne diseases.

Secondly, according to the UN Refugee website, the war between Ukraine and Russia has displaced at least 6.6 million individuals, which means that this flood is 5 times the number, equivalent to almost 90% of Canada’s total population (38 million) and 3 times the population of Portugal.

Thirdly, suppose you take into consideration the number of aid these foreign countries are giving, and also the damage they contribute in terms of carbon emission and other factors leading to climate change. In that case, Pakistan is still at a great loss and at this rate will have to face dire consequences. Canada’s $5 million aid is >50 cents per displaced individual.

Fourthly, England has also contributed its fair share to climate change and its consequences. Since 1750, the English have emitted more than 78 gigatons of carbon, their donation of 800,000 Pounds = 2 pence per person.

Even CEO of tech-giant Apple, Tim Cook, took it to Twitter to announce a donation to help the displaced families.

Mr. Cook tweeted:

The floods in Pakistan and surrounding areas are devastating humanitarian disasters. Our thoughts are with those that have lost loved ones, the many displaced families, and all those affected. Apple will donate to relief and recovery efforts on the ground.

Google has also announced to donate USD 0.5mn (PKR110 million) for sub-grants to local organisations that are actively engaged in crisis response and recovery.

Nestlé Pakistan is supporting flood-displaced communities with 250,000 liters of clean drinking water and 10,000 liters of milk.

Many organizations such as MamaBabyFund and Mahwari Justice are working to help pregnant women and girls through menstruation hygiene products and baby essentials they may need to get through this difficult time.

Pakistani Crooner Hadiqa Kiani has been at hard work since day 1 through her initiative Vaseela-e-Raah and has been working with family and friends to get truckloads of goods out to the affected victims of the floods.

Other Pakistani celebrities are donating to organizations and NGOs and are encouraging the people of the country to do the same as the death toll crosses 1150.

Netizens Are Requesting Donors to Donate Menstrual Hygiene Products for Flood Survivors

While all of Pakistan’s sister countries and foreign friends are helping the flood victims, the country’s nationals are also donating whatever they can to their fellow brothers and sisters.

While tents, canned foods, clothes, and shoes, among other essentials, have been a priority, social media is calling NGOs and organizations to also consider the donation of menstrual hygiene products and clean garments.

Thousands of displaced women and young girls are having to use dirty clothes, leaves, and other means, meaning that they are putting themselves at higher risk of infections and diseases.

A debate also broke out on social media in which many netizens argued and defended their thoughts that pads are not important and will result as waste of money.

Anam Khalid and Bushra Mahnoor are amongst the women who are collecting the essentials through donations. Moreover, they’ve started a gofundme page titled ‘Sanitary Pads for Baluchistan Flood Victims’ where international donors can contribute to the cause and a project name ‘Mahwari Justice’.

These ladies approach people or organizations that are helping organise non-food items and donate emergency kits to them. Each kit consists of new underwear and a sanitary pad packet.

Another campaign has been started by DASTAK Foundation. According to their social media announcement, the foundation will be donating ‘dignity kits’ which will include disposable and reusable sanitary pads, underwear, and sanitary napkins to flood survivors.

According to the foundation’s post, while of course food, water, shelter, and clothes are amongst important essentials, the crucial hygiene needs of women and girls cannot be overlooked.

‘This oversight and the absence of basic feminine hygiene products leaves women and girls feeling embarrassed and anxious in times of disaster, conflict, and crisis. Menstruation doesn’t stop when disaster strikes; women shouldn’t be forced to put their lives on pause due to period poverty.’ Reads the caption.

It is highly important that the health of these men and women both are taken into consideration, while medicines and other items are essential, sanitary pads keep women and young girls safe from infections and dangerous diseases.
