Trigger Alert: Indian Women & Underaged Girls Are Being Sold as Brides in Kashmir

Indian women are being sold in Kashmir for as little as $35 by traffickers for forced marriages against their free will.

One of these victims, a 29-year-old woman (Nazima Begum), accompanied by her youngest son just 5 months old, shared that she lives in a single room with her 3 children including a 7 and 10-year-old.

Her husband died from heart disease 4 months ago, and although she is still going through a tough time, she is trying to show herself as a stronger individual for her children.

Nazima’s* marriage is unlike the ones we hear of, it was neither arranged nor love, it was a forced marriage. She had been kidnapped from her home in the state of West Bengal and transported 1,600km (1,000 miles) to Kashmir, where she was forced to marry a man 20 years her senior who had paid her traffickers $250 for a bride.

After his death, she was forced to look after the children on her own without any support. This is just one of the many stories AlJazeera had uncovered.

Quratulain Baloch Gets Justice After Brutal Murder by Husband

Lawyer and social activist Jibran Nasir took to social media to announce that Hyderabad’s Quratulain Baloch has finally received the justice she had been waiting for.

The mother-of-4 was brutally murdered by her own husband Umer Khalid Memon, in Barrage Colony, Hyderabad, Sindh on 15th July 2021.

What’s even more heart-wrenching is that the daughter was the one who exposed her father by sharing videos and images of him with multiple women.

A video came to the surface in which their daughter narrates what she witnessed. The daughter exposes that her mother Qurat-ul-Ain was killed by her father.

He reportedly tortured her for hours until she fainted after being hit on the head by her husband. He then strangled the poor woman to death.

Around 3-4 AM, she died on spot, and her husband went to drink in the car. Their eldest child was 9 while the youngest one was only 2 years old.

But that’s not all – he reportedly changed her clothes and his own clothes when he returned to hide the evidence. As per reports, he took her to the hospital at 6 AM, where the doctors declared her dead.

The postmortem revealed her body had bruises and blood. Her nose bled until the very end, her neck was swollen, and her jawbone was broken.

Police arrested Umar Memon on Friday for the murder of his wife after the victim’s brother filed a First Information Report (FIR). Asadullah Buledi, brother of the deceased, had registered an FIR at the Baldia Police Station.

Now, the culprit has been convicted of murder and given the death penalty – according to Nasir. Moreover, the children are being raised by Qurat’s family.

Although Quratulain was a victim in this situation, she was not the only one. Her innocent children were also victims of circumstances and the deeds of their father.

They have been through trauma and this is something that will, unfortunately, stay with them for years to come.

‘Loyalty Has Decreased in Society’ Nadia Khan on Divorce Trend

Divorce rates in Pakistan have reached an alarming all-time high. There are a variety of factors that contribute to this trend.

Some include changes in societal attitudes towards marriage and divorce, increased financial independence for women, and longer life expectancies.

Showbiz star Nadia Khan recently gave her two cents about the issue. Khan who has been through quite a journey herself shared that loyalty in society has decreased. There are many temptations and men can easily have extramarital affairs and when women get a hold of reality, divorce is the result.

She further added that women also have become financially independent and they can take a stand for themselves which has also contributed to increased rates of divorce.  During the podcast, she added that the divorce rate in Pakistan was on the rise due to two major reasons: disloyalty and financial problems.

Khan suggested that men are tempted into extramarital affairs and women don’t waste a second to get rid of their men when they come to know about such things.

Additionally, some experts point to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic turmoil it has caused, as well as the increased stress and isolation that many people have experienced, as contributing to the surge in divorce rates.

According to a 2019 Survey carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, 58% of Pakistanis believe that divorce rates in Pakistan have increased in the country. 2 out of every 5 Pakistanis believe that the in-laws are responsible for most of these cases, it added.

According to police reports, in the first quarter of 2020 alone, 3800 divorce cases were filed in Karachi. Most recently between January to November 2021, the District Judiciary of Rawalpindi also reported 10,312 cases of divorce, khula, guardianship and maintenance. Also, 13,000 more cases are awaiting adjudication in the family courts of Rawalpindi district.

High divorce can have a significant impact on a country like Pakistan, both at the individual and societal levels. At the individual level, divorce can lead to emotional and financial stress for the parties involved, as well as their children. It can also lead to a loss of social support and a sense of isolation.

At the societal level, divorce can contribute to a number of negative outcomes, such as increased poverty and financial insecurity, particularly for women and children. In Pakistan, the cultural and social norms around marriage and divorce can make it difficult for women to obtain a divorce, and they may be left in a difficult and dangerous situation if they decide to leave an abusive or unhappy marriage.

Divorce can also have negative effects on the children of divorced parents, such as lower academic achievement, behavioural problems, and a higher risk of mental health issues.

Karachi Eat 2023: Food, Fights & Frustration, Here’s What Went Down

Karachi Eat is one of the biggest family festivals hosted in the City of Lights. Marking 10 years of food, music, and celebrations, this year was supposed to be a milestone in history for the organisers but turned out to be a nightmare.

So what happened? The 3-day event took place at Beach View Park from 6th-8th January 2023. As usual, there were a number of stalls along with live music and some activities for families to enjoy.

However, while days 1 and 2 went by pretty well, day 3 ended on a chaotic note. Here are the reasons why day 3 turned out to be total chaos:

1. Overcrowded

While the turnout is always huge, this year it was just too much. People were bumping into one another, kids getting lost in the rush, men bumping into women, parents fighting over things, food being spilt, trash being thrown, you name it. Those who were walking were bumping into those who were eating, and this was only creating more frustration among the attendees.

2. Limited Security Arrangement

What exactly went wrong at Karachi Eat 2023?

While everyone knows that Karachi Eat is a family event and stags are not allowed, a number of them tried to enter the venue by any means necessary to take advantage of the live music and event. While some jumped over the walls, there were those who broke through the barriers placed by the security, and from a source, it was also found that some even passed on money to get in.

3. Endless Harassment

Now that the family event was no longer restricted to families and friends, the environment became nasty. Women and children were being harassed by the uncontrollable crowds, so much so that singer Kaifi Khalil had to stop his concert, he even took to social media to highlight the uncivilized behaviour at this year’s Karachi Eat 2023.

4. Overpriced Food

As usual, even though some stalls were on-point in taste and price-wise, there was plenty that was over-priced and hardly visible in quantity. Imagine thousands of hungry people standing in line for food that is not worth the hard-earned money.

5. Fights, Fights, & More Fights

Being Pakistanis we of course have a 0-tolerance policy, and these videos are exact proof of that:

Taking notice, the organizers of the Karachi Eat Festival issued an apology, they wrote:

“Over the years we have taken the brand to Lahore and Islamabad with the same aim in mind. Despite our most stringent efforts, the closing day of our 10th Eat Festival saw unruly crowd behaviour and some very unfortunate and sad incidents occurred.

“This vengeful disregard for rules and regulations gave rise to events that caused much discomfort to innocent people as gate crashers ran amuck. The crowd at the venue on Sunday was less in absolute numbers than on Saturday but because there were no unruly gate crashers, the first two days ended on a civilised note. Regardless, we are collecting the data and conducting a deeper investigation into the matter of surveillance, breach of boundary walls and the need to up the restrictions of what is brought into the arena. Our thoughts and sincere apologies for all who were affected by the unruly crowd and the innocent people who were caught in the crossfire.”

South SSP Syed Asad Raza told Images that no case had been registered about any untoward incidents at the event.

SSP Raza said that a huge crowd had gathered and some of them who did not have passes tried to enter but the management and the police closed the doors for a while. However, some people entered it by scaling low walls  “the mismanagement was partly created by physical checking of passes that led to a crowd of people gathered before entry gates,” said the officer.

He said that no one was arrested nor had a case or complaint been registered by the management of the food festival.

However, we must ask ourselves, where are we headed? The traumas that the men, women, and children faced, and witnessed, and the horror stories emerging have compelled us to reflect on what we’ve become as a society. Is the Karachi we all love and know? Pakistanis have always been praised for their generosity, is this how we treat our own people?

We hope that all the individuals are safe and sound who were present at the venue during this chaos.

Woman Gang-Raped in Lahore After Being Lured in for Job Interview

In an unfortunate event, a Lahori woman was gang-raped after being lured in by a fake job call. Moreover, this is not the first time this has happened.

Furthermore, the culprits involved in this heinous act have reportedly ‘recorded videos’ of the immoral act to blackmail her in the long term.

Details indicate that a first information report (FIR) has been filed at the Gujjar Pura Police Station under the provisions of kidnapping and sexual assault.

When she arrived at the designated destination, the suspect led her to a house where he and two other accomplices forced her into a room and raped her at gunpoint.

The victim told the police that Khalil, the prime suspect, befriended her on social media and introduced himself as the manager of a medicine company.

The police are now looking into the matter. However, we would like to point out to our readers that before they go for a job interview, they should run some background checks.

Whistleblower Alleges Top Baluchistan Hospital is Running a Prostitution Ring

In a strange turn of events, a whistleblower has claimed that a top hospital located in Balochistan is allegedly pimping out its nurses through a vast prostitution ring.

Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has noted the incident and directed the relevant authorities to investigate this matter at hand.

The matter came to light after a nurse blew the whistle on the repeated incidents of sexual harassment.
A staff nurse at the hospital wrote to the provincial authorities and police claiming that “An organized gang was operating in the Sheikh Zayed hospital which forces nurses into prostitution.”

She claimed that if anyone dares to defy the gang, they are threatened by the gang members who are quite powerful.
“Those who comply, receive lucrative income and additional resources in the hospital,” she claimed.

Following the revelations, the Balochistan chief minister took notice of the matter and directed the relevant provincial authorities to launch an investigation against the gang.’

The provincial authorities have asked the nurse to testify and provide the names of the individuals involved. She was promised strict security in exchange for her testimony leading to a conviction.

It is highly unfortunate that a hospital has been named in a disgusting act where a woman’s self-respect is sold and nurses who take an oath to protect lives become helpless and are forced to sell their dignity.

We hope this matter is dealt with urgently and those involved are given the punishment they deserve.

3 Female Pakistani PhD Holders Open Up About Online Harassment by Own Countrymen

Online harassment is a serious issue that affects people all over the world, including in Pakistan. It can take many forms, such as cyberbullying, stalking, trolling, and the distribution of non-consensual images.

It can have serious consequences for the people who experience it, including emotional distress, fear, and difficulty concentrating or sleeping. If you or someone you know is experiencing online harassment, it is important to remember that you are not alone and that there are resources available to help.

Recently, BBC Urdu reached out to 3 Pakistani females who have completed their PhDs in Australia. While in conversation, these women revealed that the kind of harassment and criticism they received from their own fellow countrymen was shocking.

According to the harassers, a single (alone) woman or someone who is modern, means that the woman’s character is dirty. They believe that the family members have given them permission to roam about freely, without knowing who she hangs out with or where she goes.

In Australia, things are different, no one raises objections to a woman’s clothes, colour, complexion, weight, or height, and no one will ask where you are going, why you are going there, or what business you may have there. Be it any form of transportation, women don’t have to worry about being visually assaulted by men. Everyone is busy with their phones or their own life.

They don’t interfere with your personal business. According to recent stats, there has been a 34% increase in international students that have gone to Australia from Pakistan to pursue their studies, the majority of them being women.

Dua Zehra: SHC Hands Over Custody of Minor to Parents

Dua Zehra’s case had spread like wildfire in Pakistan. Social media wanted answers as to how a girl ended up from Karachi to Lahore, got married, and why she had refused to return home to her parents.

A petition regarding the alleged abduction of the teen was heard today by a bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro.  The Sindh High Court temporarily handed over Dua Zahra to her parents in an alleged abduction case on Friday (6th January 2023).

During today’s proceedings, the teenage expressed her wish to go with her parents before the court. To this, Zaheer’s lawyer urged the court to stop the Karachi girl from going abroad.

Zaheer Ahmad’s lawyer further said the petitioner should approach the trial court as the girl was sent to a shelter home on court orders and was not kept in the custody.

She was the main witness in the case, he added. He said the parents had held five meetings with the girl and they asked her whether she wanted to go home or not. In this case, Zaheer should also be allowed to meet the girl, he argued.

Zaheer’s lawyer appealed that the girl should be stopped from being taken out and the judge replied everyone wanted to go to their parents’ house. “No one wants to leave their parents’ house and our court is open to all. The girl is young and she does not want to go to a shelter home,” the judge said.

The court asked the girl’s father Mehdi Kazmi what guarantee he would give to the court. The court, while addressing the girl’s mother, said: “We are handing over the girl to you and now you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders.”

The SHC handed over the temporary custody of the girl to her parents against surety bonds worth Rs. 1 million. The court disposed of the petition and handed over the case to the trial court to decide on permanent custody of the Karachi girl.

Dua Zehra disappeared from Karachi, leaving her parents to wonder whether if their beloved daughter was kidnapped, or worse. Turns out, Zehra was in Lahore. Not just that, she had married a boy named Zaheer.

Her father, Syed Mehdi Kazmi, challenged the nuptials under the Child Marriage Act. He called out Zaheer and alleged that this is not possible and surely this was a trap set by Zaheer and some other men involved in this disgusting honey trap set.

After several weeks,  Zaheer Ahmed admitted that the marriage was a trap and that he was involved along with others in trapping Dua Zehra, calling her from Karachi to Lahore.

Ahmed and others were booked by the police for kidnapping an underage girl from Karachi. According to the police, Ahmed kidnapped the underage girl in the Al-Falah Colony area with the abetment of other co-accused and married her in Lahore.

In July, the Lahore court allowed Dua to live with her husband. The Model Town court, while issuing a verdict on the police’s plea to send the girl (14 years old according to her father’s claim and 18-year-old as per her own) to Dar-ul-Aman, rejected the police request and allowed Dua Zehra to live with her husband Zaheer Ahmed.

She was then produced before SHC where the court ordered a medical examination of the girl. The medical examiner stated that she is aged between 16 and to 17-year-old.

She was then shifted to a shelter home on SHC orders.

Remembering Kanwal Naseer: Pakistan’s First Female Television Host, Anchor & Artist

Kanwal Naseer aka  Kanwal Hameed was born on January 23, 1943. Naseer was Pakistan’s first female announcer, first female newscaster, first female host, first female drama artist and first female producer.

She represented Pakistan’s culture in 16 countries with the same elegance which was part of her personality. Her mother Mohini Hameed was a broadcaster and actress who was awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz twice.

Another distinction for Kanwal was that she was the youngest member of the television founding team. She started in radio at the age of seven and started in television at the age of 16.

She was the one who spoke to viewers along with Tariq Aziz during the first-ever transmission of PTV, saying the iconic lines ‘Yeah Pakistan Television Hai. Kanwal Naseer made her first announcement at the PTV on 26th November 1964.

She was an anchor who didn’t use a single English word if she spoke in Urdu, and vice versa if she was speaking in English or Punjabi. This was a special distinction that was held by Kanwal Naseer.

Naseer was given the ‘Pride of Performance Award’ by President Pervez Musharraf while President Mamnoon Hussain presented the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and also organised an event of tribute in her honour. Kanwal’s name was also recommended for ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’.

She passed at 73 after suffering from diabetes and being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for 3 days. She died on March 25, 2021, in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Kanwal Naseer, the recipient of the Lifetime Achieving Award, is survived by her son Ali Naseer and three daughters – Saman Jawad, Shazaeh Naseer and Maniha Naseer – to mourn her death.

In her final days, she played the role of a grandmother for a drama serial, which is currently being shown on a TV channel. Haseena Moin was writing a role for Kanwal Naseer in her next drama serial, but they both left this world.

She was not just a role model, but also a symbol of grace, style, poise, and elegance. “From the age of perhaps seven, I was placed in front of the mic to be the voice of a princess in almost every radio story aired for children. We were a family of modest means but the wealth of culture and intellectuality was in abundance,” Kanwal Naseer shared in an interview.

#JusticeForDayaBheel: How Much More Do Pakistani Women Have to Take?

As you celebrated the new year with your loved ones with full zeal and zest, you must have seen an image floating around on social media.

The picture is of Daya Bheel, a 44-year-old Pakistani-Hindu and mother of 5.

Bheel was brutally and ruthlessly raped, decapitated and mercilessly tortured to death. Her relatives discovered her body, which had been dumped in the mustard fields in a village during a search party that was gathered after she had failed to return home.

“Her head was separated from the body and the savages had removed flesh of the whole head, wrote PPP Senator Krishna Kumari Kohli of Tharparkar.

A police team from Hyderabad was also said to be visiting Sanghar to collect samples of suspects for DNA examination.  Reportedly, the police officers have said to recover the weapon that is believed to have been used in the heinous act.

PPP leader and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Minister for Minority Affairs Giyanchand Essrani took the notice of the incident on Thursday. Essrani was scheduled to visit the area on Friday.

A sheet was also found lying at the scene of the offence. The exact number of samples collected by the Hyderabad police could not be confirmed but the sheet may prove of use to catch the sick individual or individuals behind this act.

“The sorcerers are being questioned from time to time. Daya Bheel’s relatives claimed that her husband also died following a matter involving a sorcerer”, said a police official.

He added that no one was officially arrested but suspects were being grilled to seek their answers to important queries. One of the sorcerers was identified as Roopo Bheel who, police believed, was in touch with her over the mobile phone.

“This case is being closely watched and the murderers of Daya will be arrested soon,” Sanghar SSP Bashir Ahmed Brohi told reporters. Moreover, a 5-member joint-investigation team led by Sinjhoro DSP Javed Ahmed Chandio has been formed. The DIG has tasked the JIT to submit the initial report in 24 hours.

Just recently, Pakistani actress Ushna Shah also voiced her concerns that religious minorities in the country have no rights and are treated with criticism.

She wrote, “Daya Bheel, a Sindhi Hindu raped, murdered and decapitated in the most heinous manner yet barely any media outrage. Why aren’t we speaking about this.”

In a follow-up tweet, she said “I have some close Hindu Pakistani friends. Wonderful, kind people, some are even like family to me. They happen to be from privileged homes. I shudder to think that their lives would have been bad if they had not been, like the majority of minorities, who have no voice #dayabhel.”

Increase in Crime Against Women from Minorities in Pakistan

As haunting and unbelievable as it sounds, it’s awfully true. In recent days, crimes against women, particularly from the minority sectors have increased.

According to the United Nations, Pakistan has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. This violence can take many forms, including physical abuse, sexual assault, and honour killings. There are a variety of factors that contribute to violence against women in Pakistan, including cultural and social norms that discriminate against women and a lack of legal protections.

It is important for the government and civil society to work together to address this issue and ensure that women are able to live safely and free from fear of violence.

It’s high time we spoke up for the women and girls and use our voice to raise awareness on not just a national level but an international level. Crime against women, children, men, minorities, and all in between needs to come to an end, it’s about time!
