Alarming Increase of Rape Cases in Pakistan, Women Angry & Vulnerable

rape cases in pakistan

Rape cases in Pakistan have been on the rise in recent years, causing immense concern and anger among the citizens of the country.

Just over the weekend and the days after, we heard of several heart-wrenching cases including the gun-point gang rape in Islamabad’s F9 Park, a bus hostess’ rape in a moving vehicle by the guard, the Bawalpur rape case in which a woman was sexually assaulted in from of her mother, a 15-year-old in Karachi who was raped, amongst other cases.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, an average of 11 cases of rape are reported in the country every day. This is a highly alarming statistic that has led many people to question the safety of women and children in the country.

Alarming Increase of Rape Cases in Pakistan & Causes

The reasons behind the rising number of rape cases in Pakistan are complex and multi-faceted. One of the major factors is the societal attitude towards women, where they are often seen as second-class citizens and their voices are not given enough importance. This has led to a culture of impunity where perpetrators feel that they can get away with their crimes, leading to an increase in the number of rape cases.

Another reason is the lack of access to justice for the victims of rape. The legal process in Pakistan can be long and arduous, with many victims facing resistance and intimidation from the police and the judicial system. This has led to many cases going unreported, and those that are reported often result in a low conviction rate.

IYZIL: Female Safety App & Everything You Need to Know

The rise in rape cases has also been attributed to poverty, lack of education and social marginalization. Many of the victims come from marginalized communities where they lack access to basic services and have limited opportunities for education and employment. This makes them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and they often have little means of seeking justice or protection.

The impact of these rising rape cases is far-reaching and long-lasting. The victims of rape often suffer physical and psychological trauma that can last a lifetime. In addition, the stigma attached to rape in the country makes it difficult for the victims to regain their dignity and live normal lives, leading to long-term social and economic impacts.

Nipping Rape Cases in Pakistan in the Bud

In response to the rising number of rape cases, the government has to take several measures to improve the safety and security of women and children. This includes the creation of specialized police units to deal with crimes against women, the implementation of stricter laws and harsher penalties for perpetrators, and the creation of more shelters and support centres for victims.

However, much more needs to be done to address the root causes of rape in the country and to bring an end to this cycle of violence. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach that involves the government, the legal system, civil society, and the media, working together to raise awareness and bring about a change in societal attitudes towards women.

Safar Saheli: Govt to Launch App for Women Safety During Commute

The increasing number of rape cases in Pakistan requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving the government, society, and citizens to effectively curb this problem. Below are some ways in which they can help:

  1. Government: The government should enforce stricter laws and penalties for perpetrators of rape and ensure that victims have access to justice. This includes ensuring that the legal process is prompt, fair, and transparent and that victims are protected from retaliation and intimidation. The government should also provide adequate resources and support to law enforcement agencies to effectively deal with the rising number of rape cases.
  2. Society: Society can play a critical role in changing attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate a culture of violence against women. This includes promoting gender equality, education and awareness campaigns, and challenging harmful gender norms and stereotypes.
  3. Citizens: As citizens, it is important to be vigilant and speak out against rape and gender-based violence. This includes reporting any incidents of rape and supporting victims in seeking justice. It is also important to educate children about consent and respect for others, and to promote a culture of respect and equality for all people, regardless of gender.
  4. Media: The media has a critical role to play in shaping public opinion and raising awareness about the issue of rape. The media can report on incidents of rape and the impact they have on victims and communities, and promote messages of equality, respect, and dignity for all people.
  5. Civil society: Civil society organizations can work to provide support and assistance to victims of rape, and to raise awareness about the issue and its impact. This includes providing counselling and legal assistance and advocating for better policies and programs to address the root causes of rape.

In conclusion, addressing the increasing number of rape cases in Pakistan requires a collaborative effort by the government, society, citizens, media, and civil society organizations. By working together, we can create a safer and more equitable society for all.

How Women Can Protect & Prepare Themselves in Alarming Situations

There are some precautions women can take when travelling alone or in an unknown area to protect themselves.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when you are alone or in an unfamiliar place. Be cautious of people who seem to be following you, and trust your instincts if you feel threatened.
  • Carry safety equipment: Women can carry knuckles, tasers, alarms, pepper sprays and other safety equipment on themselves in case a stranger attacks them.

5 Safety Gadgets Pakistani Women Should Consider Getting

  • Stay connected: Let a trusted friend or family member know your whereabouts and carry a charged cell phone with you at all times in case of an emergency.
  • Be cautious of strangers: Be cautious of strangers who approach you and try to engage in conversation or offer assistance. Avoid getting into a car with a stranger, and never accept food or drinks from someone you do not know.
  • Protect your personal information: Be careful about sharing your personal information, such as your address or phone number, with strangers.
  • Know self-defence techniques: Learn basic self-defence techniques, such as how to escape a grip, how to strike an attacker, and how to make a loud noise to draw attention to yourself.
  • Avoid food or water offered by strangers: Avoid eating or drinking anything offered by strangers as they may have drugs mixed to impair your judgment and make you more vulnerable to attack.

It is important to remember that no one is immune to sexual assault and that the responsibility for preventing rape always lies with the rapist. By taking these steps, women can reduce their risk and be better prepared in the event of an attack.
