Women have been performing spectacularly in the startup space and we are so inspired. This space is not merely a boy’s arena anymore as it has been conquered by beautiful, talented forces of women who are ready to unleash their talent onto the world and leave a mark.

It isn’t just about cooking in the house kitchen, it is about transitioning that rare talent into a successful business! While the Pakistani society still feeds on gender stereotypes and inequalities, women in the entrepreneurial space find it hard to ward off everyday challenges that are thrown at them, just because they aren’t men. Be it any kind of start-up, the struggle to battle stereotypes is real because not many can achieve what these women have.

Luckily, these women have made it to where they are today because of undying support from families and their unparalleled talent.

Here is what sweetheart baker Hira has to say about her business, while talking exclusively to WOW 360, Hira poured her heart out, revealing how passionate she is about her baking; this is not just about business for her, it’s A LOT more.

I’m Hira Ansari and CocoLoco is my baby. It all began from helping my mom in the kitchen while stirring a cake batter to adorn a cake all myself. I practiced baking cakes, cookies, and food for my family and friends, and their appreciation fueled my interest in art.

My family’s support was the most crucial element in me being where I am today. I joined several cooking classes and experimented at home, where my dad and mom were the headmaster chef. Upon their direction and constant appreciation, I stand here.

Visiting bakeries always used to fancy me where I wrap myself in the aroma with piped out sparkly shiny eyes hoping that one day I’ll have something like this of my own.

Completing my BBA degree and pursuing teaching as my career, I decided to let this passion fade away with time. I was scared to start it; thousand of questions arose in my mind every day, and on top was, ‘what if I fail?’ This thought haunted me for ages, and one day I had to put my foot down ( thanks or no thanks to corona that I got an ample amount of time). Luckily I was surrounded by people who have always been a source of motivation and inspiration. I still remember my first order, how my entire family and fiancé (consider him family) were all covered in exuberant energy.

The first and the only rule of my business is to treat customers like family and put in the best possible ingredients (and lots of love) to whatever I bake. The kitchen has always been a learning ground for me. I learned how to be responsible and disciplined, but the most important lesson was how just a small box of sweet could put a beautiful smile on someone’s face.

Her passion for her work speaks volumes, and we know she’ll make it big one day!

2. Burmese Bowls & PJ’s Jars- Co-Founded by Javeria Nakhuda & Rahma Nizami

These two super-talented IBA graduates decided to put their exceptional cooking skills to use and start their own hustle that soon turned into a very successful online business. Taking on the world, one delicious Khowswey bowl at a time, these young ladies are a source of inspiration for so many talented women out there.

I, from a very young age, was appreciated of my cooking skills and people have enjoyed the food I served them. So when CokeFest 2.0 was happening in 2019, I decided to have a stall of Burmese Khowsweys under the name of Burmese Bowls. It was very well received. We also participated in KarachiEat 2020, with our famous KhowSaMosa Shot, which became very popular. We also cater to orders on a weekly basis.

No other stall was open by even 4:30 so this ended up being our first pick. 🙈 Not bad though, but nothing extraordinary either. We just opted for it because i have already tried the khousuey numerous times. – Khao-samosa Shots by @burmesebowlskhi – Okay this was interesting and definitely qualifies as ‘festival food’. It was bite sized and promised a burst of flavour in a “shot”. The samosa itself was very tangy and spicy and when gulped with the coconut curry sauce, i think it was a good appetiser. A shot was Rs 70. – Haryali Prawns by @portsidefood. My friends said these were grilled to perfection but wished they could have added more sauce. A serving was Rs 350. – Chili Cheese Dogs and Shackster by @thecheesyboyspk turned out to be my favourite find from Day 1. The buns were so soft, the sauce-meat ratio perfect. Recommended. – Sour Cream and Onion Patties from @hobnob.official. The taste is garlic-y and if you always get the Sour Cream & Onion flavour in chips then you will enjoy this for sure. Rs 120. – Glazed Donuts from @odonutpk. I actually tried two flavours: Glazed and Nutella but thought the glazed ones were so much more fluffier and fresh. – Alpha Nuggets with Poutine from @thenuggettown. This is also one of the busier stalls at KhiEat. Definitely a combination I enjoyed. You can also get their nuggets with mac n cheese just be prepared to wait a bit. – Dirty Korean from @drty.dogs was a great try too. 🌭One can never have too many hot dog options but I like how people are thinking about using better ingredients than what is commercially available at the moment, esp with bread and sausages. – Buttermilk Bao Bun from @pantrykhi. Pantry actually has a very interesting menu. I tried their Buttermilk Bao Bun, Grilled Cheese and Lamb Pockets. If you are a meat lover then opt for the Lamb Pockets first. . Sidenote: Going to a festival can be stressful and windy af so go with friends and layers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our fan favourite are Kashmiri Laal Mirch and Lehsan Chutney, And Gajar Achaar. We aim to make Chutneys and Achaars gourmet, and have introduced Eid Packs, Father’s Day/Mother Day Packs, to make chutneys and achaars cool again. We have done a couple of Collaborations in the past, and have luckily collaborated with amazing women entrepreneurs such as Varah of Firefly and Sabeen of Olive19.

3. Oven Fusion- Founded by Bismah Amin

Over fusion started with a menu offering a range of 6 brownies, they are now offering a range of 10 brownies, a variety of cookies and customised cakes.

It was in 2016 when I started my bachelors at IBA and got ever so busy with the university life. Baking has always been my passion, trying new recipes and taking it for my friends to try out was a routine. On a lucky day, my mom suggested the idea to have an online platform to sell these baked items. I was thrilled by the idea, however it seemed impossible considering the amount of time and effort it needed.

Exactly 1 year later, my mom took up the challenge and dedicated herself to run a small home based bakery through online platforms. It has been nearly 3 years to this amazing journey. The stage where we are now is solely because of my mom’s resilience and strength throughout.

I took charge of the social media platforms, while she manages all operations from baking, deliveries to new product developments. There have been hundreds of challenges that we never saw coming our way, but it only helped us grow better.

My motivation has been my love and passion for food. Run by a super talented baker named Amna Tauqeer, Yum by Amna started out as an online business that grew into her opening three bakeries,  the third one in Karachi.

Waslat Hazrat Nazimi: First Female Journalist To be Appointed Head of Afghan Service at Deutsche Welle, Germany is an Inspiration for All Women!

A famous reporter and journalist Waslat Hazrat Nazimi, is an Afghanistan born, Germany based reporter who works on the latest trends and developments in international news for the social media team on DW (Deutsche Well) News, Germany.

Reporters who uncovers the truth without any bias and becomes the voice of the weak and downtrodden without any greed for money, fame and power are hidden gems and and just what this cruel world needs and Waslat is one of them!

There are people suffering in Afghanistan and their miseries go unheard; but journalists like Waslat choose humanity over anything else, an Afghan refugee herself who fled to Germany at a very young age, the woman is still deeply tied to her roots and is a unique blend of two very different cultures.

Waslat has recently been appointed DW’s Head of the Afghan service. She will be the first female to lead the Dari Pashto department ever since it was established 50 years go. She was previously working in the Dari, Pashto, German and English editorial department.

Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai also took to Twitter and congratulated Waslat.

TALKforyou is an online show that Waslat recently started hosting in collaboration with WDR that reveals raw and unbiased experiences of Afghans and their current sufferings.

Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi has always stood up for refugees and brought their pains to the forefront through media. Waslat who was born in 1988, entered Germany as a refugee at the tender age of 4 years and has always yearned Afghans and their miserable fate.

Living in Germany and witnessing the entire world progress in the field of science and technology, Afghanistan has been brought to a standstill by extremists pushing their own selfish agendas.

Waslat became the first Afghan journalist to win the “Rumi Appreciation Award” in 2015, for her  exceptional work on reporting the presidential election in Afghanistan. In her work she tried to highlight the current political power struggle in the country and how the people are becoming a victim to it.

Waslat has always tried hard to use her journalistic experience and position to bring to light the struggles of Afghanistan  and change the lives of the victims whose lives have been brought to a halt. She wants to create a deeper and better understanding of the two cultures.

The world needs more humane and kind-hearted journalists like Waslat and we wish her all the best!

Why does Pakistan Still Rank Amongst the Lowest on the Global Gender Gap Index 2020?

Pakistan is the world’s 5th most populous country yet it has a surprisingly low female labor participation rate of less than 25%. It is ranked at no 151 out of 153 countries on the Global Gender Gap Index 2020.

We spoke to Samia Liaquat Ali Khan, Senior Group Head, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), about possible explanations for these inequalities. She has been working in the development sector for over 20 years and we asked her what needs to change for the women of Pakistan?

Why does Pakistan rank at the bottom of the global gender gap index?

“One of the biggest factors contributing to this low figure is the lack of equality in opportunities for women, which is conveyed by Pakistan being placing third last on global gender gap index.”

Samia informs us that the gender gap index is measured by 4 key factors, which include economic participation, access to health, access to education and participation in political structures of the country.

“We as a country need to acknowledge that there is a problem that we have not yet managed to really provide that equality of opportunity for women and girls in this country. Since women are largely excluded from the labor force, they can’t contribute to economic growth, social change and environmental protection of the country. Due to a lack of opportunities for them to be able to participate in the private sector or public sector, they are denied a platform to effectively showcase their ideas and viewpoints.”

 

She goes on to say

This leads to their voices being unheard in their laws and policies which is why women continue to be underpaid and are not welcome in the public space e.g. (market, senate, national assembly, government department at district or provincial level). For this reason, you will see very few women there and because you see few women their voices are not heard.

It’s not just men who need to change their mindsets; it’s the women too !

Samia also stressed the importance of a change in the mindset that women don’t belong at these places. She says

“I think we need to change the mindsets of women as well as men because I think women equally sometimes don’t allow other women to progress the way they want to progress. For example, we have a lot of girls who are the highest achievers in schools and colleges and they go into medical school. Now you have a reverse quota in medical schools that at least 30% of your entrance need to be males because the girls who go there and graduate and should then be practicing as doctors are getting married and their families don’t approve of them practicing or they don’t want them to be in that kind of a working environment so they prevent them.”

This results in Pakistan suffering a great loss as then the country has far fewer doctors entering into the workplace than required, which negatively impacts our progress as a nation.

COVID -19 and its Impact on Women

According to Samia, research has shown that women are being far more adversely affected by Covid-19 than men. She says

“A lot of times if factories and other sorts of private sector companies need to lay off people and slow down the operations, which they’ve had to do over the last 6 months, the women are usually the first to lose their jobs. As women are much more present in the informal economy, there are no formal contracts or agreements to safeguard them or provide them with compensation. With informal workers such contracts don’t exist so they face complete and immediate loss of income, as opposed to a slower decline.

The Pandemic has affected many sectors of the Economy

Covid- 19 has had a huge impact on a lot of different sectors of the economy, such as construction, which was a key sector, impacted.

However, luckily after 2-3 months of the pandemic, the government luckily allowed certain parts of the construction sector to start operating again. Since this sector employs daily wage earners, without them earning a daily income they and their families would potentially be starving.

The restaurant industry, which employs approximately 10 million workers across Pakistan, is another sector, which has been badly affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

“Now you haven’t really had restaurants open for the last 5/6 months so all of those workers, or a large majority of those are not getting their wages or getting much reduced wages. So with 10 million workers out of work and half of these restaurants probably having to close down, the impact is large.”

Samia also adds,

“So there are these big issues we are going to face post pandemic. I think we’ll have to also maybe have some innovative ideas. We need to look strategically at some of the new businesses coming up during this time. How do we train our work force for the right skills to try and have them participate in some of the new areas of work?

New opportunities have arisen based on telecommunication and digital communication. The number of companies that provide these services are increasing, but women are often excluded from these kinds of industries so we have to think about what women can do at home, what kind of opportunities we can provide them and which business activities they could contribute to/help them engage in those business activities.

‘It Is Obligatory To Seek First Wife’s Permission For Second Marriage’ Supreme Court’s Order

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday made it incumbent for a husband to attain consent from his first wife or an arbitration council before getting married for the second time.

The law of needing permission for second marriage from the first wife was aimed at society’s improvement, the court remarked the violation of this may lead to many issues and create problems.

The Top Court’s Ratification

The top court sanctioned the requirement of the first wife’s permission or a positive response from the arbitration council for a man for a second marriage. If a husband takes consent from his first wife, he must immediately pay her the complete amount of haq mehr, or dower, which is agreed during nikkah. Nevertheless, whether it was to be paid instantly or without a deadline. Upholding the PHC’s decision, the appeal against it was eventually set aside.

Moreover, the petitioner Muhammad Jameel — who had married without the consent of his first wife was ordered by the Supreme Court to immediately pay his wife total dower agreed on the day of his nikkah.

Muslim Family Law Ordinance In Islam

When the law was validated, Islamic scholars like Noorani, Mufti Mahmud  and Maududi didn’t object and were some of the most active politicians. Hence, it was presumed that the Muslim Family Law Ordinance 1961 was in line with the teachings of our religion Islam.  So the question is, what made the present head chief of CII declare that there isn’t any need to ask your wife if you want to get married again? His aim to do so is crystal clear, to divert people’s attention from the wrong doers, the ones who think that it’s completely okay to create situations that can cause major problems in our society or who want to spend the rest of their lives only spreading destruction and chaos.

The Second Marriage Law in Pakistan

As per the Second Marriage Law in Pakistan section (2) permission for an application under sub-section should be submitted in the prescribed manner to the Chairman along with the prescribed fee and then it shall clear out the reasons for the proposed marriage, whether the permission for second marriage is obtained from the first wife.

The Chairman is supposed to ask the applicant and his first wife to nominate a representative.  And if the marriage is necessary, the permission is then granted by the existing wife to her husband.

Rules On Which Pakistani Husbands Get Permission For Second Marriage From The Union Council

In our society, usually the wives don’t allow their husbands and are not ready to marry their man off again even if it’s necessary and under second marriage laws in Pakistan the chairman of union council has to see the reason for permission. If in any case the husband already filed suite for antenuptial and got decree from in his own favor, then only in this condition he can get permission from union council.

#KarachiRain: Emergency Declared by Sindh Government, Relief & Rescue Operations Continue

Heavy rains lash Karachi for the third day on Thursday, wreaking havoc in the city. Three children have died due to rain related accidents while roads are heavily flooded, causing landslides, and elongated power outages, reports Dawn News.

Emergency has been declared by the Sindh government as rain in Pakistan breaks a 90 year record. 

The water level in Hub Dam, that supplies drinking water to Karachi and meets the water needs of various areas in Balochistan crossed the 338-foot level on Thursday and is expected to fill to its maximum capacity for the first time in 13 years. 

According to Geo News reports, 339ft level can be crossed any time today, and the excess water will start overflowing from the spillways of the Hub Dam into the sea near Mubarak Village.

WAPDA officials informed Geo News that the management of Hub Dam, as well as the body and irrigation officials have started arriving at the dam to deal with the emergency situation following the water spillage from it.

The emergency gates of the dam will be opened before water from the spillways is discharged automatically, reports Geo News

Relief and Rescue Efforts

Relief and rescue operations continue for flood victims in various parts of Karachi, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate.

Army engineers have used heavy machinery in an effort to stop water flow from Malir Nadi. “Water in Malir Nadi has reduced and backflow from Quaidabad to Malir Nadi has started. Army engineers’ boats are employed in various areas to shift stranded people to safer places,” reports, the Nation

The media wing of the military said that cooked meal was provided to the affectees, flood victims stuck due to the heavy downpour in the city.

Over 200 families have shifted to rooftops due to the heavy flooding in Dur Muhammad Goth, Malir Nadi, and Kohi Goth.

Army helicopters will be flying to rescue these families after weather clearance, said the ISPR.

The incessant monsoon spell began before dawn and continued till evening in Karachi, breaking previous rainfall records in the city during the month of August. According to the Met department reports, it has rained 345 mm in August so far in the metropolis, breaking the August 1984 record of 298 mm.

The Met Department warns about the trend continuing for two days, and reports about another system developing over the Bey of Bengal, likely to hit the province at the end of August, with several rainfall.

The Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, on account o urban flooding, has declared a rain emergency in Sindh. The government employees have been directed to report to their departments immediately in lieu of this emergency.

 

As Dawn News reports, the CM visited Malir, Airport and Shahrah-e-Faisal witnessing the low lying areas flooded with rain water.

“I have imposed rain emergency, we’re with the people in this challenging time,” the chief minister said, according to his spokesperson. Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah said that the Sindh government will not leave the people alone in this “time of need”.

The CM’s spokesperson infirmed that a vehicle mounted dewatering machines is working to drain the water near airport area.

Landsliding in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, areas in North Nazimabad, Azizabad, Surjani Town completely fooded

The road leading to Karachi University, Hassan Square and Safoora Chowrangi was inundated with few feet high rainwater.

Sewage and rainwater has entered people’s houses in Azizabad, North Nazimabad Block 2 areas. Nursery Pechs has been majorly flooded with cars literally drowning in rainwater.

The heavy showers have caused landsliding in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 3, resulting in 23 to 25 cars being severely damaged in the parking of a residential building. Thank fully there were no casualties reported and people in the nearby houses have been evacuated.

More than 80% of the people living in Surjani town have been forced to relocate to safer places as water entered people’s homes.

Rainwater seeped into cars

Some of the areas in Karachi that have been heavily hit with rain include Malir, Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Saadi Town, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Federal B. Area Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Surjani Town, and North Nazimabad.

Almost three-feet deep rain water had accumulated on Karachi’s main artery — Shahrah-e-Faisal — as water could not be drained from either side of the road. Vehicles were stranded on the road in water, and many cars broke down as rainwater seeped into their engines.

According to Geo News reports, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Faisal Base received the highest rainfall, at 125 millimetres (mm), report the Pakistan Met Department.

The PMD further warned that the ongoing monsoon spell is likely to continue till Thursday morning. And a new monsoon system is expected to enter Sindh by August 29-30.

Enola is put under the guardianship of her brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock, who plan to send her to a finishing school. Yet free-spirited Enola won’t let that happen. Hence she decides to take charge of the situation herself and figure out her mother’s disappearance.

The Controversy Between Canon Doyle And The Film Cast

Even though the movie focuses on Enola, Sherlock (played by the star-studded Superman and Geralt of Rivera himself, Henry Cavill) has to deal with the lawsuit filed by Canon Doyle’s estate which tends to sue Netflix (alongside Penguin Random House, Springer and the production company associated with the film) due to Sherlock’s character in the movie which is portrayed extremely kind and full of emotions.

‘Mukhtar Baji’ a Female Village Youtuber Is Being Threatened By Her Community Members

Popularly known as the ‘Daily Routine Wali Baji’ on YouTube, Mukhtar is a female village YouTuber who is currently being threatened by her community to share the portion she earns from her Youtube channel.

Mukhtar is a resident of JallaArain, a town near Lodhran. She shares her daily house chores and routine on her new channel, the #DailyRoutineWaliBaji.

Her content went viral on social media and her subscriber count went up to 20,000 when she uploaded videos of her village life and when she uploaded videos of her house which is entirely made out of mud and bricks known as a ‘Kacha Ghar’ in our national language. She also uploaded videos of the different sorts of food she cooks for her family on her mud stove made out of twigs and dry sticks.

In this male-dominated society, turning up from a small town, Mukhtar Baji came up with her YouTube channel on her eldest son ‘Abrar Ali Arain’s wish. Abrar completed his intermediate lately, he bought a new cell phone and introduced Youtube to his skillful mother, the mother acknowledged her talent by keeping her faith in God and started off with her venture wholeheartedly upon her son’s request.

Mukhtar Started Getting Threats Once She Revealed Her Income

Mukhtar Baji was a field laborer earlier and she used to harvest cotton and wheat on her field to make ends meet and support her family.
She got herself in trouble when she disclosed her monthly income of 60,000 to 70,000 on a question and answer session on Youtube. She is being threatened by the people whom she once considered as her own, they want a share from her hard earned money or her to handover her Youtube channel to them.

After this unfortunate incident, she brought this up on her channel by uploading a video in which she poured her heart out to her audience about the anguish she is going through, she spoke about the threats of calling for her and Abrar in a legal case from which it will be next to impossible for them to get through. Moreover, she mentioned the terrifying threats of getting her son killed and getting her kidnapped.

Her Simplicity Won Thousands Of Hearts Over Social Media

Mukhtar baji, a simple woman living a simple life in a village alone with her children, using a huge platform such as Youtube in the best way possible and trying to live a sustainable life is traumatized by the threats and doesn’t want to risk her or her son’s life. Due to this fear she doesn’t let her children head out alone and this fear has severely effected her mental health. She came up with her channel only recently but due to her wholesome and meaningful content she has touched thousands of hearts and now she wants her views to stand up for her in this regard.

Recently, DPO Punjab took serious actions against the offenders and payed a visit to her village after this incident. Mukhtar baji uploaded a video thanking all of her viewers who supported her and stood up for her.

She even warned the culprits about stepping back, or else she’d expose their names and leave them deeply mortified.

Microblading: All You Need to Know Before Getting the Treatment

Maybe you have naturally light hair or maybe you just like filling your eyebrows with a pencil every morning despite having average amount of eyebrow hair, and don’t want to do anymore- whatever it maybe, microblading is a one-time (mostly), convenient solution to achieve a set of perfectly thick, natural looking eyebrows.

The term “microblading” itself sounds a bit scary and intimidating. Do they use blades to give you more hair? Does it hurt? Is it too expensive? How long does it last for? Is it safe? I am sure these are questions that pop up in everyone’s heads. It can be a little confusing, specially for someone who is getting the treatment done for the first time and has no idea about the procedure.

Worry no more! We have tried to give answers to almost all the frequently asked questions in this article, including what exactly the procedure is, the after-care process, who should get it done and more.

What Is Microblading?

The end result is very similar to an eyebrow pencil that you use to fill your eye brows, however, eye brow pencils can be wiped off, while microblading is a more long-term, semi-permanent eye brow thickening procedure. It is similar to getting a tattoo where a special microblading pen is used that draws strokes on your eyebrows using ink. The strokes look like real hair. The ink used is dilute and is specially curated for microblading.

Doest Microblading Last Forever?

It does not last forever, but it can last from 1 to 3 years, depending on the type of skin, sun exposure, how do you take care of it post-treatment etc. It is definitely, a more long-term solution to using eyebrow gels and pencils, but you might need once a year touch-up. The ink does tend to blur faster for people with oily skin. Also, if you don’t apply the healing ointment or don’t reduce water exposure in the first one week of treatment, the procedure may not last very long.

Who Should Get Microblading Done?

People who want hassle free, thick eyebrows and benefit from eyebrow gel or a pencil, should go for microblading as they will benefit from it. There are people who fill in their eyebrows every morning. Waterproof gels last a bit longer and maybe the brows need to be filled after a few days, but those who want a more permanent solution, should try the microblading treatment. However, females who have serious medical conditions, or are pregnant, are advised not to opt for it.

What Exactly Happens During a Microblading Session?

It really depends that one chooses a professional expert to get the treatment done. So at first the area is sanitized and numbed. The expert then consults with the client regarding eyebrow shaped and thickness- clients often show pictures as references. The expert then decides to go with the client’s eyebrow shape, texture, color and direction to create more natural, fuller looking brows.

The client’s age, skin undertone and face symmetry is also taken into consideration before choosing the ink pigment. The expert then draws strokes mimicking the hair on the eyebrows using the microblading pen.

This procedure takes about 30 to 40 minutes. After-care cream is then applied to help the area heal. A follow up appointment is then scheduled for after almost a month. The eyebrows are finally set at this appointment.

Post-Treatment Care

This step is VERY important as the final look of your brows is dependent on this. Oftentimes people experience pigmentation and redness around the area, but if the ointment is applied regularly, the brows heals and the redness goes away. However, there are few precautionary measures that needs to be taken- experts recommend keeping the brows dry and avoid excessive wiping to prevent the brows from fading or blurring.

Infection is also possible if proper aftercare isn’t followed. Some people also experience scabbing and temporarily have to change their sleeping position, but it all settles down after one or two weeks if proper post-treatment care is practiced.
