Islamabad Police Introduces Transgender Job Quota

A spokesperson from the Islamabad Police has announced that the police will now recruit transgender officers. This announcement was not only appreciated by the trans community but also on social media.

Many social activists and trans rights activists expressed their happiness and praised the capital administration for implementing this. They believe that this will help the community secure jobs so that they can feed themselves and their families.

Moreover, this will help individuals who are a part of the transgender community to step away from professions that are frowned upon in society including begging and prostitution.

About 1,668 vacancies have been announced in the department under the Transgender Persons Act, 2018. Trans community members can apply for these seats based on their gender as written on their identification cards.

The spokesperson for the Islamabad Police announced that their appointment will be conducted under the general merit category.

The entire process will be carried out on a merit basis for which the force has formed a departmental recruitment board consisting of senior officials as per the vision of the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the special instructions and interest of the Interior Minister.

The Transgender Persons Act, 2018 has been a topic that has been in the spotlight for some time now. While there are some religious personalities who disagree with the act and think it promotes same-sex activities in the country, others believe it is much needed and highly misunderstood.

Transgenders in Pakistan have been getting their rights, however, there is still a rift between the community and society. There are still many trans individuals who still struggle to date to receive their rights. We have yet to see how these upcoming laws and more job quotas will help them prosper.

Islamabad Police’s Amna Baig Gets Nominated by the US Embassy for ‘International Women of Courage’ Award

Amna Baig, a female officer of Islamabad police, has been nominated by the United States (US) Embassy for the ‘International Women of Courage’ Award.

The award for which Baig is nominated recognises women globally for exhibiting outstanding courage and leadership in championing peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women empowerment.

The announcement of the nomination of the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amna Baig was made on Thursday at an event marking the 30th anniversary of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign. The event was hosted by US Embassy Charge d’affaires Angela P Aggeler. As per a press release, the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign began in 1991. It says that over 6,000 organizations in 187 countries have participated in the campaign.

“Even though gender-based violence is pervasive, it is not inevitable. It can and must be prevented. This is why we take this time each year to reinvigorate our efforts against gender-based violence and to call for greater collective and individual action to prevent and respond to all forms of violence against women,” said d’affaires Aggeler at the event.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amna Baig is currently in charge of the law enforcement’s Gender Protection Unit, a government initiative to facilitate women and transgender people in their fight against discrimination and injustice.

Amna graduated from NUST business school back in 2013. She studied economics as her major. Many might differ, but Amna believes that PSP is a great career for women as it empowers them. In fact, it is the most empowering career for a woman in Pakistan.

Police Officer Amna Baig has been promoted to Sub Divisional Police Officer in Kohsar. Previously, Amna was posted in Punjab. She is a native of Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. Amna announced the news on the micro-blogging site where she is most active. She said, “Took charge as Sub Divisional Police Officer Kohsar, hoping to serve and protect Islamabad with @ICT_Police”.

Islamabad Police Introduces Self-Defence Classes for Women in the Wake of Sexual Violence & Assault Cases

On Friday, Islamabad Police announced a ‘Self Defense Course For Women”. The course has been set up in the light of recent sexual harassment, violence, and assault cases increasing in the country.

In Islamabad alone, the case of Usman Mirza and Noor Mukadam has sent shock waves across the country. Following that, the 14th August Minar-e-Pakistan assault case was also comprehended as horrific. It is evident that women in the country aren’t safe in public or even private spaces, and hence, measures need to be taken by the ruling authorities to diminish such heinous crimes.

The news of the course was announced on Twitter. The Islamabad Police in a tweet said,  “Islamabad Police Is All Set To Start “𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧” Empower yourself by learning combat skills, weapon handling, defensive driving, and much more because we believe in stronger YOU!”

If you wish to apply for this course, you can do so by downloading the Admission Form in the tweet below. The duration of the course is  1 month, from the 4th of October to the 4th of November
The classes will be three days a week from 4 PM to 7 PM. The course costs Rs. 30,000. 

Twitter Lauded Efforts Being Made in the Capital of the Country to Keep Women Safe

Indeed, this is a great initiative taken by ICT Police. One that is need of the hour.

Police officer Amna Baig, from Islamabad, who was also actively involved in Usman Mirza and Noor Mukadam’s case urged women in Islamabad to join the course. She wrote on Twitter, “Ladies, register for our self-defense course!”

While the efforts being made in the capital as commendable, “we need similar courses across Pakistan.”

A user said, “This is real Women Empowerment and I support it!”

“Bravo! these initiatives will surely benefit women”

Someone suggested that First Aid and Situational Awarness must also be included in this course.
