Pakistan Pavilion Design by Rashid Rana Wins the ‘Best Pavilion Exterior Design’ at Dubai Expo 2020

Pakistan Pavilion’s facade, designed by Rashid Rana, has won the ‘Best Pavilion Exterior Design’ at Dubai Expo 2020.

Rana is a Pakistani artist who has been part of numerous exhibitions held in Pakistan and overseas. His work comprises abstractions on canvas, collaborations with billboard painters, photographic/video performances, collages using found material, photo mosaics, photo sculptures and large stainless steelworks have all been displayed in these exhibitions.

His talent was displayed in front of the world at the Dubai Expo 2020 platform. He had the opportunity to design the facade of the Pakistan Pavilion, which he transformed into one of the most significant works of its kind. “The artistic intervention, titled Unity of All that Appears, comprises twenty-four thousand seemingly identical yet, in fact, unique pieces, fractionally different from each other in size and colour.”

For Rana, the work draws inspiration from the diversity of Pakistan: “It takes after the seasonal transitions in Pakistan and diversity it has to offer — geographically, climatically, culturally, ethnically and racially.”

Interestingly, the Pakistan Pavilion only has one entrance, and then you can exit only once you have taken a complete tour; before that, you can’t turn back. It comprises narrow passages and open spaces and is divided into eight parts. The estimated cost of the Pakistani pavilion is $21.4 million.  Just recently, Rana has also received Sitara-e-Imtiaz (civilian award) to recognise his achievements in the field of fine art.

Dubai Expo 2020: Closing Ceremony to Feature Christina Aguilera and Norah Jones

Dubai Expo 2020 is ending on the 31st of March with a closing ceremony that will be held at the same venue where the opening ceremony took place last October, the central Al Wasi Plaza. The expo was opened to the public in October last year, it lasted for a total of 182 days.

Where Can You Watch the Closing Ceremony?

The closing ceremony will be streamed live on the Virtual Expo and Expo TV. Within the Expo 2020 Dubai site, at least 20 giant screens will be set up – this includes the main stages, Festival Garden, and various Country pavilions. This will allow people present within the Expo 2020 Dubai site to watch the closing ceremony.

Exciting News:

Global music icons Christina Aguilera, Norah Jones, and Yo-Yo Ma will be performing at the closing ceremony. Each artist will perform full headline concerts across Jubilee Stage and Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre. Five Currents are the producers of the Closing Ceremony, with Scott Givens as Executive Producer of the show.

What time will the Show Begin?

The show will begin at 7 pm sharp on the 31st of March [Thursday]. The show will begin with the young girl from the opening ceremony performing her act. Later on, Yo-Yo Ma, a grammy-winning cellist will be performing followed by Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and pianist Norah Jones, and then pop legend Christina Aguilera will take the stage.

Also taking the stage will be the Expo 2020 World String Ensemble, which is a group of 16 international musicians led by maestro Harout Fazlian, and Italian pianist, Eleonora Constantini.

It is advised to arrive early and use public transport as it is expected to be one of the busiest days at Expo 2020. It is encouraged to use the Park & Ride service from Jebel Ali Metro Station. The Dubai Metro will be open for 24 hours to ensure that visitors of the expo closing ceremony arrive and depart safely and efficiently.

Pakistan’s First Certified Female Electricians Share their Inspiring Journey with K-Electric’s ‘Roshni Baji’ Program at Dubai Expo 2020

Pakistani electric supply company K-electric has introduced its ‘Roshni Baji’ program at Dubai Expo 2020 and has given stage to Abeera Kamran and Zara Afshan, the first certified female electricians to share their inspiring journey at Pakistan Pavilion. 

The key features of KE’s Roshni Baji program were highlighted during the event. The program essentially promotes women’s role in our society, inclusivity, and raises awareness in communities reshaping Pakistan’s power sector.

What is the Roshani Baji Program?

The Roshani Baji translates to Beacon of Light in English, is a program envisioned by K-electric under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – gender equality and women empowerment. This program aims to provide women with a platform to showcase their talents while conducting a grassroots modification of their neighborhoods.

As per World Bank, in Pakistan, labor force participation (FLFP) has remained the lowest in the past two decades. Reports reveal that FLFP in Pakistan’s power sector drifts around four percent.

How has the Roshani Baji Program Helped Women in Pakistan join the Workforce?

Abeera and Zara shared their story at the Pakistan Pavilion. They said that with rigorous training, they have become professional at using and maintaining motorcycles to increase their mobility and have become certified as Pakistan’s first female electricians. They are fully capable of completing the internal wiring of a house, office, or warehouse on a single-phase supply.

The program has helped many women be inducted as full-time employees in K-Electric while others become entrepreneurs after completing the training program.

Iqra Aziz Attends Live Stand-Up Training on Sexual Harassment by L’Oréal Paris led by American Actress Eva Longoria at the Dubai Expo 2020

Pakistani actress, Iqra Aziz attended live stand-up training at the Dubai Expo 2020 by L’Oreal Paris in collaboration with Hollaback. The actress discussed sexual harassment with American actress Eva Longoria. 

This was the first time the actress had made her way to the Dubai Expo 2020 since its launch and represented Pakistan on the international forum. Aziz was dressed for the event in a classic royal blue blazer and paired it with sleek curls. Eva on the other hand also put up a suit with a baby pink shirt.

 The Khuda Aur Mohabbat star attended the session led by Eva who explained the 5D methodology to combat sexual harassment in public spaces.

Iqra captioned her thread of photos she uploaded on Instagram,” Had the honor of attending a live Stand-Up training at the Dubai Expo; organized by L’Oréal Paris in collaboration with Hollaback”.

“I got to meet Eva Longoria who led the session and explained the 5D methodology to combat sexual harassment in public spaces,” added Iqra.

A survey was conducted by L’Oréal Paris, in collaboration with researchers from Cornell University and Ipsos, that studied wide-scale harassment via online interviews with 15,000 participants. As per the survey, 80% of women have experienced sexual harassment in public spaces and 76 % of women have experienced sexual harassment in public places worldwide.

What does 5D Methodology Stand for?

L’Oréal Paris’s live Stand Up training program has been launched in partnership with the NGO Hollaback. It aims to train 1 million people who are bystanders to intervene and help curb street harassment.

The 5D stands for:

  • Direct
  • Distract
  • Delegate
  • Document
  • Delay

The program reiterates Loreal’s commitment to “ending street sexual harassment and transforming the culture that perpetuates the behavior and discrimination,” – the goal is to discourage and curb harassment and promote safe ‘bystander intervention.

AR Rahman’s Daughter, Khatija Rahman Left the Audience Stunned with her Performance at Dubai Expo 2020

Oscar-winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman’s daughter Khatija Rahman stunned the audience with her soulful performance at Dubai Expo 2020.

Khatija, who is often bullied online for covering herself, performed her kalam Farishton at the world fair on the 20th. However, the news of the performance didn’t make it to social media until her father, AR Rahman, shared it online.

On Choosing to Wear a Burqa: Several times, the 23-year-old has stated that covering herself is her own choice. Regardless, people often believe that it is her father who has forced Khatija to cover herself. Last year, Khadija’s clothing became a subject of great discussion online, and so, to clear the air, her father, AR Rahman, responded by saying that her daughter” finds her freedom” in her decisions and he is”awestruck” by her simplicity.

Before her performance at Dubai Expo 2020, Khatija said that for now, she is looking forward to carving her destiny beyond her father’s immense fame. She says, “I’m still finding myself, and I hope there is a day when I’m just defined by my name. That’s what I’m craving. I spoke to many people who said it’s very normal to go through that existential crisis – like, what am I doing? Am I doing enough”

Farishton was first recorded and released in 2020 on the video-sharing platform YouTube with an animated video that can be seen playing behind the orchestra while Khatija performs.

AR Rahman has three children, Khatija Rahman, Rahima Rahman, and A.R. Ameen.

Pakistani Celebrities Tour PAKISTAN Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 & Promote Women Empowerment

Pakistani celebrities were spotted at the Dubai Expo 2020, touring the Pakistan Pavilion, the land of colors. After all, the ‘Hidden Treasure’ popularity attracts people to visit and explore the pavilion.

Pakistani celebrities including Nadia Hussain, Aijaz Aslam, Ayesha Omar, Fakhar-e-Alam, Waseem Badami, and others were seen on social media being interviewed by Dubai-based publisher Khaleej Times. While speaking to the journalists at Dubai-based publication, the stars said they realized that the platform serves as a massive opportunity for the country. They were thankful to be given a chance to visit and promote their brands and promote women’s empowerment.

Ayesha Omar said, “we will be talking about women empowerment in Pakistan” on the platform. “How women are coming forward now, in the last 5 years, and in the future now, what women are going to be doing, how they are going to be putting Pakistani on the map.” Furthermore, the stars will be talking about the latest developments in the country, how to put Pakistan on the map in terms of business, and other opportunities at the event.

Dubai Expo 2020 is the most significant cultural gathering in the world. It is also the most prominent event ever held by the Arab world, celebrating the best creativity, culture, and innovation from 192 countries. There are plenty of exhibits and pavilions set up by participating countries that are worth visiting.

The 2020 edition of the Dubai Expo is expected to be visited by at least 25 million visitors throughout the passage of a six-month run.

As per Ayesha, Pakistan Pavilion is currently in the top 5 pavilions at the Dubai Expo 2020. It has inferred a significant number of visitors from France and India.

Nadia and Aijaz were also invited to an interview on Dubai based radio channel where the stars revealed interesting facts and had a great time with the host.

As per the official site of the Pakistan Pavilion, the principal curator,  Noor Jehan Bilgrami, says that the Pakistan Pavilion “illuminates the unique jewels of Pakistan unknown to many, both within and outside the country. The narrative of the Pakistan Pavilion reflects the poetic way in which the past, present and future are woven together as a tapestry that reveals the rich and layered history, culture, people and traditions of this land, while also highlighting the immense potential and possibilities it holds for the future,” she added.

The Pakistan Pavilion at the Dubai Expo 2020 has certainly been in the limelight from the day the Expo 2020 commenced on October 1st, 2021. We take you through a stunning visual and sensory journey with Noorjehan Bilgrami, the Principal Curator, to discover the ‘hidden treasures’ of our country and its heritage.

The majestic geographic landscapes, works of master craftsmen, food, music, and the amalgamation of the different cultures and religions that co-exist will fill all Pakistanis with a sense of pride. The colorful façade is absolutely stunning and has been designed by one of Pakistan’s leading visual artists, Rashid Rana, who was inspired by the diversity of the country.

“Our country is one of the most diverse regions on the planet; geographically, climatically, culturally, racially, and ethnically and I wanted that reflected in the design,” he says.

‘People need to come and observe with their senses and not rush through.” says Noorjehan. With 8000 visitors on the first day and over 30,000 so far, she mentions how she never expected it would be such a quick game changer in changing people’s perception of Pakistan.

As you will see in our video, there is a lot of detailing of information and layered effects of sound, music, and even fragrance – you can even smell “motia” as you walk through the beautiful corridors! The filmmakers will leave you with a sense of awe when the vastness and beauty of the mountains and changing landscapes throughout the length and breadth of Pakistan surround you.

The project took almost 3 years to set up from being created conceptually up till completion on site. Each month will exhibit a different province, with Balochistan being the first to be showcased.

Mr. Razzak Dawood, advisor to the Prime Minister for Commerce and Investment, is the minister in charge of TDAP, the department responsible for the pavilion. He requested Pakistani architects, Mr. Shahid Abdullah, Yawar Gilani, and Mahboob, to provide some guidelines for the work. A trust was then formed to collect private and corporate funding, which together with the UAE government help to put up the pavilion.

  • Curatorial Review Committee: Shahid Abdulla, Yawar Jilani, Mahboob Khan
  • Curatorial Team: Fatima Mullick, Zoha bin Zubair, Noor Ahmed, Irfan Naqi
  • The official soundtrack of the pavilion has been composed by Rohail Hyatt and is called ‘Lala-e-Sehrai’
  • The interior design for the Bazaar and the 2 restaurants, including the Dhaaba and the VIP lounges, are done by Naheed Mashooqullah
  • Kamran Sheikh does the Food and menu for the restaurants
  • Project Management, Javed Idrees
  • Architect: Emad, an Iraqi Canadian architect

Kanwal Ahmed, Founder of Soul Sisters Pakistan Featured by Cartier at the Women’s Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020

The founder of the women’s Facebook group Soul Sisters Pakistan has received the honor to be featured at the Women’s Pavilion at Dubai’s Expo 2020 by Cartier.

Kanwal has been dubbed as the “Pakistani Oprah” by the French luxury brand. In Pakistan, she has hosted and produced Conversation with Kanwal. This digital talk show revolves around providing a safe platform for women to tell the world their tragic stories. The show is currently on its third season, produced by the money raised through crowdfunding.

Kanwal announced the news of her being featured at the Women’s Pavilion by Cartier at the Expo 2020 Dubai. She wrote in a post,  “Cartier is calling me Pakistan’s Oprah?! I KNOW! 🤯 I couldn’t believe it myself when I got the email a few months ago and legit thought I was being scammed. Imposter syndrome still going strong today.”

“I’m honored to be representing my country on a platform that features some of the most inspiring women from across the globe. Lulz to everyone who likes to believe my work doesn’t project a pOsiTiVe image of Pakistan. You owe me some serious biryani for all this budgumaani.”

She thanked everyone who played an important role throughout her journey,  “I just want to thank YOU for being there through my journey of Conversations with Kanwal. You believed in me when no one else did. You applauded my show when traditional ratings said there was NO scope for it. You had my back when no one wanted to sponsor it and you crowdfunded for it. Thank you for having my back and for always pushing me forward. I love you all. Look where we are now. ”

In 2018, Kanwal was selected for the Facebook Community Leadership Program. This program selects 115 leaders from the community across the globe to develop leadership skills and work alongside Facebook to advance their platforms further.

Her selection was made based on the group she founded in 2013 called Soul Sisters Pakistan, a private women-only Facebook group meant as a safe space for Pakistani women to discuss culturally taboo issues and share advice.

Pakistan Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 Impresses with a Stunning Facade, Contemporary Offerings & Dhaba Food

The biggest cultural gathering of the world, Dubai Expo 2020, has kicked off today in UAE. Pakistan-based visual artist, textile designer, researcher and educationist Noor Jehan Bilgrami, who is the principal curator of the Pakistan Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, says that the Pakistani pavilion will prove to be a game-changer for the country. Pakistan falls under the opportunity section. Renowned artist Rashid Rana designs the facade of the Pakistani pavilion.

The global trade show aims to enhance the trade and commerce of 190 countries by displaying their human resource, inventions, investment opportunities and culture with the globe. The fiery 90-minute glittering ceremony opened the global trade show with foreign dignitaries, rulers of UAE, and Golden Globe Award and Grammy winners.

Attendees on social media who are lucky enough to take the pavilion tour on the first day of its opening describe the Pakistan pavilion ‘as a sight for sore eyes.’

What to Expect at the Pakistani Pavilion?

Pakistan Pavilion comprises narrow passages and open spaces and is divided into eight parts.

Noor Jehan Bilgrami told an international publication that she had “created a seamless experience and decided to use multimedia to describe different places and happenings in Pakistan. People will keep walking through the facility without missing the lovely timeline that shows Pakistan’s history until it evolves into a modern-day state”.

An area has been set up that is dedicated to promoting different Pakistani cuisines. As you come to an end, there is a bazaar of traditional crafts which are up for sale, and then there is a dhaba for visitors to fulfil their cravings or try Pakistani food for the first time.

The estimated cost of the Pakistani pavilion is $21.4 million.

You can experience special VIP treatment at Expo 2020 Dubai by signing up for the Jubliee Experience. This will give you access to valet parking, a special lounge, and other perks. It costs Dh 10,000.

3 – Complimentary passes by Airlines

Heading to Dubai Expo 2020 may be hefty on your pocket. To facilitate everyone stepping in Dubai to visit the Exhibition, the carriers from UAE, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Fly Dubai, are offering complimentary passes to any passengers that fly with them between October 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022. 7 – The all women Firdaus Orchestra by AR Rehman

A group of female musicians have been recruited by Oscar-winning composer AR Rehman to join an all-women ensemble for Expo 20202 Dubai. During the fair, the Firdaus Orchestra will perform several times.

8 – Pakistan Pavilion: Your Visual Invitation to Land of Colors

Pakistani artist Shahid Rassam to display largest Holy Quran with script plated in gold at Dubai Expo 2020. The pavilion will be located in the opportunity district with immersive and engaging hybrid art installation. 9 –  Moroccon Pavilion Inspired by Villages in the South

Morocco’s pavilion is made entirely of rammed earth, using a traditional Moroccan construction technique to create 22 stacked rectangular sections. The Moroccan villages of the south inspired it.

10 – Pavilion of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Break Three Guinness World Records

The newly revealed Saudi pavilion break three Guinness World Records. The structure features the largest interactive floor, the most extended water feature and the biggest screen.
