Department of College Education Sindh to Train Female Government College Students How to Ride Motorcycles

The department of college education in Sindh has announced to give training to female students in government colleges on how to ride motorcycles.

As per sources, the department has reached out to the colleges to provide a list of female students who wish to drive motorcycles.

Women on Wheels (WOW) Training for College Girls Students

Moreover, the department will collaborate with the Sindh Women Development Department (SWDD) to provide the said training to the students.

Officials from the SWDD have shared that the purpose of this training is to empower young girls and make them independent.

Previously, a similar proposal was also taken by the Punjab government provided electric scooters to the female staff in public schools all over the province. But due to the rising inflation and economic disaster, the initiative is yet to follow up by the new government.

It was also suggested that the Government of Sindh also provide interest-free scooties for female employees in easy instalments and Punjab Government earlier decided and allotted an amount in the Annual Budget 2022-23.

Furthermore, this initiative will help students who are finding it difficult to commute through rickshaws and public busses, while also proving relief to parents as well.

Lady Traffic Wardens Patrol on Motorbikes in Lahore to Provide Women Drivers Sense of Security

Chief Traffic Police Officer of Lahore Muntazir Mehdi has inaugurated a motorcycle squad in the city.  Lady Traffic Wardens have begun patrolling on motorbikes to generate awareness and a sense of security among women drivers.

The traffic police are mobilising to create a sense of security among women driving cars and motorcycles. Initially, officials established only a contingent of 25 lady traffic wardens. The lady wardens will provide a sense of security to female passengers and introduce the idea of inclusivity on the road.

According to officials, the lady traffic wardens will also engage with awareness campaigns in several educational institutions. Officials believe that by witnessing women lady officers patrolling the roadways, more women will be comfortable coming out of their homes and riding motorcycles in the city.

141 female officials are serving in the city traffic police currently.  Ladies Driving School has also been set up to develop self-confidence among women additionally.

To place women in authoritative positions such as on the roads as traffic police were only possible due to driving projects such as Women on Wheels. It is currently underway on Ferozepur Road in Lahore to prepare more women to drive a motorcycle. According to a local publishing site, thousands of women have learned to drive a motorcycle at the Women on Wheels School.  

CTO Muntzair Mehdi says that lady wardens fulfil their assigned responsibilities in the training, ticketing and licensing offices very efficiently. Some are also in charge of important city traffic police posts in the city.

Mehdi further said that “the motorcycle squad aimed to acknowledge women drivers’ capabilities, highlight their importance and strengthen them. A society can only progress if the importance of women is not ignored.”

On Tuesday, female traffic wardens showed up on main boulevards on two-wheelers for patrolling duty for the first time in the history of the southeastern province of Pakistan. The step is taken to create awareness among motorcyclists. Traffic police officials in Karachi informed the media outlets that the female cops are deployed at Shahra-e-Faisal and Clifton, one of the city’s major roads and an upscale neighbourhood.

Women Riding Bikes to Earn a Living Has Become an Increasingly Popular Trend in Pakistan

The Women on Wheels project was the beginning of women stepping out of their homes and training to drive motorcycles – a stereotype that should have been busted a long time ago. The Salman Sufi Foundation was behind this brilliant campaign to provide women with better mobility in Pakistan through subsidised motorbikes.

Even though the campaign aimed to provide mobility to women in Pakistan, eventually, it turned out to be a way to earn a decent and respectable livelihood. As the months passed by, more and more women learned how to drive a bike, either with the help of Women on Wheels in different cities of Pakistan or by being motivated to see other women on the road.

Following the trend, The Coffee Wagera Maskan outlet also came out with a ‘women empowerment discount’ for any female who rides a bike and shows up on it at their café! However, things still weren’t as easy as they seemed, as women were still rejected licenses.

In September 2020, Shireen Ferozepurwalla, hailing from Karachi, had claimed that she was denied a motorbike license by a government official just because she is a woman, but that didn’t stop our brave women from stepping out on the road.

Women Riding Bikes to Earn a Living – an Increasingly Popular Trend

Later in the coming months, we witnessed many women on bikes on the road – some exceptional stories also made it to social media. These women were delivering parcels, driving other women and children around the city, delivering food, or just female police constables driving on bikes in Karachi that took women empowerment to new heights. Careem, Uber, Bykea, and Foodpanda played a huge role in employing women for such jobs that require them to come out on the road.

Careem introduced an option on their app called “Women on Bikes,” which helped women Careem drivers locate only women passengers.

Foodpanda hired women trained by WoW to deliver food & other items to customer’s doorstep.

This movement collectively has not just proven to financially assist women but also increased their mobility greatly. More women will likely join other women on the road and thrive on the wheels.
