India’s Leading Channel To Air Pakistani Content After More Than Three Years

The CEO of Zee5 Global, India’s leading entertainment platform revealed that Pakistani content will now be broadcast on their digital app Zindagi after more than three years.

According to the news, a number of famous Pakistani dramas will be aired for the Indian audience which includes Mahira Khan’s Shehr-E-Zaat, Osman Khalid Butt and Maya Ali’s Aunn Zara, Badi Aapa, Mastana Mahi, Fahad Mustafa’s Main Abdul Qadir Hun along with some original content from Cake director Asim Abbassi, Ramchand Pakistani filmmaker Mehreen Jabbar and others.

When asked about the opinion from the creative head of Hum Network Television Momina Duraid, said:

It is a proud moment not only for Hum TV but also for Pakistan that our programs are going to be watched by a much larger audience worldwide.

She further added:

It is definitely a win for our cultural values and norms as the entertainment industry is the most vital tool to present and sometimes elevate the status of a society

 

While revealing the news, the CEO of Zee5 Global said:

Zindagi has always been appreciated for its premium content offering and culturally rich stories from across the globe, which are far more attuned to the digital audience sensibilities.

Launched in 2014, Zee Zindagi previously ran quite a few Pakistani plays due to which Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan became major stars in India. After the unfortunate event of Uri attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir, the government announced a ban on Pakistani content in India which was also protested by a few Bollywood stars,

There is no doubt that art has no boundaries and now we hope that broadcasting each other’s content will help the two nations to create a peaceful bond all over again.

Zhalay Sarhadi Spills The Beans About Her International Film Project

Ruling over millions of hearts, the stunning Zhalay Sarhadi never fails to impress us with her amazing looks and flawless acting skills. She has also managed to sweep an entire generation off their feet within a short span of time with her bubbly personality.  After winning the hearts of her fans in Pakistan, the starlet will now steal the limelight on the international level as well.

 

It was recently revealed that she will be acting in an international commercial movie under the direction of a big name. During an interview, she said:

Both my characters are very interesting. In one I’m supposed to be playing something to do in the armed forces, and the second character is an ex-courtesan who has left her old life behind and is moving forward.

When asked about if will be an Indian movie, she said:

“It is a commercial film, and no it has nothing to do with India.”

Apart from that, she is also working on her debut music album and will also be working on a local movie, to be shot in the northern areas of Pakistan.

Well, it seems like the Qismat actress is making the most of this quarantine phase to polish her skills.

Vikram Seth’s BBC Adaptation of ‘A Suitable Boy’ Heads to Netflix

Vikram Seth’s classic 1993 novel, ‘A Suitable Boy’ is being adapted by BBC for the small small screen by Andrew Davies. He has earlier brought Les Miserables and Sanditon to the small screen too.

1,349 paged novels, the book is considered to be one of the longest novels ever published in a single volume in the English language.

If you are a fan of ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’, this is good news for you, as the BBC1 series is on Netflix from 23rd October ! Netflix has requested Global Rights to the series and is now ready for release.

The series comprises of six episodes for a brand new BBC1 period drama. Set in the 1950s, the family saga reflects on values and culture and India learns to adjust to the newly found independence.

As the trailer reflects, the backdrop is stunning, the cast is stellar, and fans are more than excited!

“A Suitable Boy” revolves around the lead protagonist- a spirited university student Lata, (Tanya Maniktala) as she comes of marriageable age in North India. Set in 1951, the country is figuring out its own freedom and identity as a newly independent country while first democratic general elections are right around the corner.

Meanwhile, a young man Maan (Ishaan Khatter of Dharak) meets Lata at their siblings wedding and is a source of constant embarrassment to his family and father- a political figure. Maan is obsessed with a courtesan Saeeda Bai (Tabu).

While speaking about the new project, Davies told Radio Times:

“I am truly thrilled to be chosen by Vikram Seth to adapt his masterpiece A Suitable Boy for the screen. It’s a charming, almost Austenesque story, with a delightfully relatable heroine, set against the turbulent background of India in the years following Partition. It has been a total joy to work on, and I hope that audiences will love it as much as I do.”

The project is led by the BAFTA and Oscar nominated director Mira Nair, who has directed famous projects such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake. Here is what she had to say:

Jazaa Foods By Junaid Jamshed TVC 2020: A Heart Touching Message About Sharing Equal Blessings

Emotional story telling is slowly becoming the way of marketing, and is more effective for new brands, recently launched in the market. An ad that tugs at your heartstrings, will generate top of the mind recall and increase trial generation by target audiences.

It’s refreshing to see meaningful ads delivering strong messages across. After Ahmed Foods and Shaan Foods, another masala (spices) brands, Jazaa Foods by Junaid Jamshed has released a TVC that is bound to melt your hearts.

The recently released Jazaa Foods #ChakhoNaimatonkaMazaa ad puts across a beautiful message about sharing equal blessings with the less fortunate.

The 1 minute 48 second ad starts with a kid returning home from school and telling his mother that he is hungry. His mother immediately opens the cooking pot and starts filling the plate with steaming hot, freshly made pulao which the kid thinks is for him.

However, to his disappointment, the mother gives the box full of pulao to her house help whose father is unwell. She tells her to take the pulao for her ailing father, and spend time looking after him rather than cooking.

 

Once the house help leaves the kid complains that she gave most of the food away and left very little for them to eat- to which the mother replies ‘Jo ham dedetay hain wohi tou hamaray liay bachta hai, baaki sab tou kharch hojata hai’.

A deep and impactful message that speaks volumes about charity and sharing our blessings- something that our religion teaches us to practice but we often fail to do so.

The voiceover then follows:

‘Jo De Kar Bachanay ka Gur Janay, Wohi tou hai Jo Rizq ko Jazaa Manay’– Because what we give away is actually written as a ‘good deed’ for us in the other world, the rest is spent on materialistic things in this temporary world.

Despite being a short commercial, as compared to other similar TVCs (for example Surf Excel, Shaan Foods) the message was conveyed beautifully and had a lasting impact.

There are two aspects being touched upon in this TVC-

  1. Social Aspect- The act of doing charity and giving back to society
  2. The importance of a mother as role model in raising children- inculcating good values in her child by practicing what she preaches and setting an example.

Kids start learning and picking up on habits from a very young age. And a mother is a child’s best friend, inspiration, guide and role model. A child will quickly learn and easily practice what happens at home; therefore, it is vital that we start practicing what we preach to our children, and this ad is the best example!

The mother is trying to inculcate values such as humility, modesty, and the act of sharing in her child so that he grows up to be a responsible member of society- reflecting the significance of her in his child’s life.

Ertugrul Ghazi: The Turkish Response to ‘Game of Thrones’?

Ever since Ertugrul was aired on Turkish TV and started gaining fame in other countries, viewers had been comparing it with the record-breaking western series, Game of Thrones. Since both are period dramas with impeccable sword fights and perfect horse-riding scenes against picturesque landscapes, does that mean Resurrection Ertugrul is a befitting Turkish response to the ever-popular Game of Thrones? And will it be a crime if I say Ertugrul is actually better in terms of storyline?

Many may disagree when I say Ertugrul is more interesting and captivating. Several might even stop reading any further. Even though Ertugrul Ghazi started airing in Pakistan this April, the show had gained quite a momentum ever since it was released on Netflix and had already built a large fanbase. Just like me, many were curious to find out what the hype was all about and were pleasantly surprised and then hooked to the show!

The Turkish drama revolves around a 13th century, fearless warrior called Ertugrul who is the father of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Usman. It shows the obstacles and hurdles his nomadic Kayi tribe faces before the caliphate was found. It displays Islamic culture and history in it’s true sense and how Islam rose above and spread despite Muslim leaders facing adverse politics and schemes at the hands of Christians, Mongols and Byzantines.

Ertugrul is a gift for all the people who desperately awaited a show with positive Muslim representation in the entertainment world, which is why the show appeals to a vast majority of viewers in the Islamic world.

Muslim characters, in Indian and Western media, are subject to constant vilification while sometimes the content is too Islamophobic to be digested even by non-Muslim viewers. However, the show has appealed even to non-Turkish, non-Muslim audiences and some have been blown away by the powerful characters, exceptional acting skills and captivating storyline.

Now let’s talk about its constant comparison to the super-hit, fiction drama series ‘Game of Thrones’.

Ertugrul Ghazi Vs Game of Thrones: Similarities & Differences

Similarities

Anyone who watches the second season of Ertugrul cannot help but notice the vast difference in graphics, camera quality, change of scenic landscapes and will be forced to compare the production value with western content.

Starks v/s Kayis

One of the stark similarities I observed between the two shows, while having watched both, is the theme parallels between the life of the ‘Stark House’ in GOT and ‘The Kayi’ tribe in Resurrection Ertugrul. Both are initially the underdogs of the show; loyal and honorable protagonist families, who revolt against tyranny, injustice and fight a long battle of good vs evil.

 

Honorable & Loyal Tribesmen  

Both the shows have the vital tropes of an exciting drama: a virtuous but imperfect protagonist, the hateful antagonists, friends as dependable and thick as kin, devoted family that has fallen prey to the whirlwinds of time, and a romantic love story brewing on the sidelines.

Exceptional Sword Fights & Glamorous Costumes

The leading characters in both the shows have perfectly timed, well- choreographed sword fights and horses’ rides which they can easily pull off without batting an eyelid. The scenic backdrops in both the shows are jaw-droppingly gorgeous!

Both men and women wear beautifully designed costumes- the male costumes in both the shows reflect drastic similarity, however, the female headgears and dresses are more culturally apt to the Turkish tradition.

Differences 

Now it depends on the kind of genre viewers enjoy watching. While Ertugrul is based on true Islamic history and reflects the Muslim- Turk culture, GOT is entirely fictional and caters to fantasy enthusiasts.

Moreover, there is a vast difference in the kind of audiences both the shows appeal to, and each has its separate fanbase.

Nadia Jamil Beats Cancer & Returns Home!

Veteran Pakistani actress Nadia Jamil, who was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer earlier this year, has finally returned home safe and sound, reports ARY News. The actress turned to Instagram and shared the happy news with her followers.

In the post while leaving the hospital she wrote, that she can finally see the sky and smell the air. “We did it”, she kept saying, with a beaming smile on her face.

This was the day I left the hospital… It was so overwhelming. And I need to say thank you to all of you for taking care of me, supporting me, carrying me in your prayers. Thank you for the kindness and the Strength. I remember the third day. The last words I heard before passing out were "Losing her.." I remember fading in all the noise & sirens, hands hitting my chest, I remember thinking the boys will be ok Who will take care of the dog and then before sinking away I remember saying to myself in my head "Gadhee kalma paRho!" A few days later I was lying in my cubicle. Curled up. I remember the solitude & silence feeling peaceful. I remember when the needles hurt me bad I would ask Allah, that if I have to feel this, ok, but let me feel You even stronger. I remember smiling when I feebly opened my phone and saw your messages. “Bald, brave, bold and beautiful is how I feel today. I get knocked down. But I get up again, ain’t nothing gonna keep me down,” she wrote in one her earlier posts.

Nadia has undergone several rounds of chemo in London, UK and has constantly kept her fans and followers updated with her journey. With a big smile on her face, the fearless star has remained positive and urged everyone for prayers and positivity. She is a true inspiration for so many ladies fighting a battle with cancer.

The next few months will be focused on rehabilitating her body and it’s a long road towards recovery. She revealed that she has developed diabetes during her cancer but feels blessed to be cancer-free, to be able to survive and get back to life.

As soon she got out, she was excited to return to a normal life. She had to get a lot of chores done, her flat sorted and looked forward to catching up on desi dramas while sipping on her mother’s chai.

She also revealed how she almost went into coma and the doctors had nearly lost her.

“There was a stage where it was difficult for me to perhaps come back. I was out. They were prepared to let me go but my heart and breath fought through those two nights.”

Nadia Jamil’s Battle with Cancer

Nadia Jamil has suffered several health issues in the past as well. She has had a brain surgery  a few years ago, and had shared updates on the famous Facebook group ‘Soul Sisters’, where she had gained quite a number of fans.

However, in an unfortunate and unexpected turn of events, Jamil took to Twitter on April 3rd, 2020 and revealed the heart wrenching news about her cancer diagnosis, Express Tribune reports.

She said, “Last week, I was diagnosed with cancer and now I’m four days into treatment.”

Jamil expressed the plethora of emotions she had felt ever since she found out about her condition. She was scared, anxious, unsure and nervous, just like any normal person would be.

“In the last few days, I have felt all sorts of feelings, from apprehension and fear to unbeatable love to calmness and acceptance. Patience, overwhelming gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility towards my children, parents, loved ones, myself and you.”

She elaborated on the type of cancer she was fighting.

“Its stage one breast cancer and grade three tumour. Regular self-checks are important ladies! Please act fast if you feel any abnormalities.”

When sharing her news back in April, she urged all the ladies to not be negligent about their bodies and themselves.

“Do not ever ignore your body, your health. I now await my surgery date and am feeling positive and loved. Please don’t worry and take good care of yourselves,” she said.

The Multi-Talented Warrior Queen

A social rights activist fighting for children’s rights, an anchor, a fantastic actor, a compassionate teacher and a strong human being, Nadia Jamil is a living, breathing inspiration for many people out there. A fighter who keeps fighting, nothing can break her or pull her down.

She has been vocal about the ills that plague our society and cause harm to children.

She recently talked about students’ rights and how they’re being ignored amidst the pandemic.

Nadia has, on several occasions, spoken up on the #MeToo movement. She is the voice of several women in our society and females love  and support her for her bold stance and positive energy.

The actress has given fantastic performances in her career. Natural, graceful, poised and brilliant, the actress touched several hearts in her latest Drama serial, ‘Damsa’.

We hope she recovers soon and grace our screens with her charismatic performances once again.

10 Upcoming Movies of 2020 to Look out For!

The year 2020 has been an unexpected one for Hollywood’s movie industry and it is still stumbling to adapt to the rapidly changing entertainment scenario. Movies releases that were supposedly theatrical debuts and had the potential to reap millions in revenue, are now being released on home entertainment media catering to the watchers quarantined at home. For other movies, it has been a bumpy ride. With opening weekends and premiers postponed, many are still figuring out their contingency plans.

Amidst this global pandemic, there is still a ray of hope, that these gem of movies will release this year (later than sooner) to uplift us and satiate cinema buffs. Even though we might have to wait a bit longer than usual, here is a list of 10 best upcoming movies of 2020 that you must look out for!

1. Mulan

Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan was set to open at the box office on July 24th 2020 but has now been delayed to August 21, 2020.  Mulan’s promising trailer reflects the same original animated magic! A young Chinese girl who is set to get married soon, impersonates a man to fight in the military instead of her ailing father. She uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion.

Disney’s Live Action remake Mulan is set to conquer the global box office. Featuring Chinese star Liu Yifei as the main character,  Mulan is a true manifestation of female empowerment- women aren’t only meant to cook and clean and get married to a man for support, she can train and fight like a man to protect her own. There is nothing females can’t do!

2. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

Directed by Patrick Hughes and hosting a stellar cast such as Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, and others, the movie is set to open on August 28, 2020.

Even though 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard did not impress the critics as such, this one is expected to be a good  one-time watch.  Let’s wait and see how Salma Hayek is saved by Ryan Reynold’s and Samuel Jackson this time.

3. A Quiet Place Part II

Directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place Part II is set to open on September 4, 2020. Sequel to A Quiet Place Part 1, follows up with the events of the Abbot Family. Written by Karsinki himself, and starring his wife Emily Blunt in lead role, the trailer is giving us all the feels!

Judging by the trailer, we will be getting flashbacks of the ‘invasion’ like in Part 1. This one sure seems like a great ride for the audiences.

4. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is set to release on September 11, 2020.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga can be seen in the sequel as they stick to their roles of Ed and Lorrain, being real-life paranormal investigators working on a real case in which a murder suspect, as a defense for his crimes, invokes a demonic possession.

5. Wonder Woman 1984

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, Wonder Woman 1984 opens October 2nd 2020. We can see Gal Gadot returning to her Wonder-Woman persona, that reaped the first movie a whopping $412.5 million at the box office.

The movie is set in the 80’s during the Cold War era while Chris Pine reappears and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman’s) love interest, Steve Trevor.

6. Death on the Nile

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Death on the Nile, a sequel to Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’
is all set to release on October 9, 2020.

Kenneth Branagh will be returning as detective Hercule Poirot in his own directorial flick and includes big names like Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer and Annette Bening.

7. No Time To Die

Directed by Cary Fukunaga, Daniel Craig’s fifth and last 007 Bond Movie ‘No Time to Die’ is set to open on November 25, 2020.

Recent Best Actor-winner Rami Malek is reported to play the villain, while it’s presumed Captain Marvel‘s Lashana Lynch will play a newer 007 who may have to relinquish her famous code number back to Bond when he comes out of retirement.

8. Escape Room 2

Directed by Adam Robitel, Escape Room 2 is all set to release on November 30, 2020.

9. Top Gun: Maverick

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick is expected to open on December 23, 2020. Fans are more than ecstatic over the news as we get  a sequel of Top Gun after 31 years!

10. The Croods 2

Directed by Joel Crawford, the Croods 2 is all set to open on: December 23, 2020

Saba Qamar Mocks The Rishta Brigade in her New Entertaining YouTube Video!

Saba Qamar, one of the leading and talented Pakistani actresses, has never shied away from speaking her mind. Be it about stigmas attached to mental health and depression in our society, the struggles female celebrities encounter in the industry, sexism, colorism, or answering awkward interview questions with sarcasm yet class, Saba Qamar is one actress who is known for bold demeanor besides her unmatched acting talent.

If you haven’t come across the starlet’s YouTube channel yet, you are totally missing out on some amazing content. The Hindi Medium star is breaking stereotypes, one video at a time!

Attacking the Rishta brigade in Pakistan, the actress released episode 5 of her #breakingstereotypes series on YouTube. She even highlights social issues like fat shaming and gender equality.

The actress took to her Instagram and shared a funny and refreshing snippet of her latest episode, that has been going viral ever since. According to Saba, episode 5 is one her favourite episodes of the series yet.  “This bunch of talented people came together to address the unaddressed,” the actress wrote in the video caption.

With the recently released episode 5, Saba once again is breaking stereotypes by having much needed conversations about the rishta culture in Pakistan, the struggles of body-shaming, casting in interviews, and ofcourse, gender equality. Saba Qamar has unapologetically stood up for feminist values and even highlighted what it’s like to be at the receiving end of derogatory comments and remarks, being a female and always in the public eye.

In the 17-minute video, the actress has specifically targeted the Rishta culture and what it’s like for women to marry over 30 in our society. Her monologue that starts at 4.10 is specially worth a listen as she talks about the kind of rishtas females receive in our society and how the Rishta huting process has turned into a business. In the end she says;

“I want to get married for myself, not for people. Tou Shaadhi kero, Karobar nahi”.

While it’s refreshing to see content creators advocate equal rights and opportunities for the female gender in their videos, it would be interesting to see more female content creators getting the limelight as well.

Saba Qamar shot an intense video addressing depression and mental health. She posted this on YouTube after the tragic death of Sushant Singh Rajput.

It’s so good to see powerful women of the industry raise their voices for causes and speak up on things of substance, rather than their makeup and workout regimens. I wish more actresses take inspiration from Saba Qamar and come forward with interesting content for entertainment purposes.

5 Best Comedy Specials of 2020 So Far!

The year 2020 has been a strange and funny year for everyone and it has been even stranger for stand-up comedians. Many of the block buster stand-up releases were put on hold or pushed back, merely because the times aren’t safe for crowds to gather to watch these talented people perform.  Stand-up performers, meanwhile, are trying hard to adjust to these changing times and perform either from home in front of their screens, or simply waiting for times to get better.

In times like these, comedy is the only thing that can provide momentary solace. The powerful comic sequences also make us more aware of the social issue presiding in our society in addition to making us laugh.

Here is a list of 5 best comedy specials of current times. Each one of these is special and has something to teach, in their own way.

1. Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis

This hilarious Netflix watch is relatable yet simple and easy to watch. The Goldilocks of comedy, Taylor Tomlinson makes sure everything, from the set up to punchline, is just accurate. Her self assured rhythm, slight and effective physical comedy and natural way of storytelling is what makes her so charmingly funny. Sticking to contemporary topics like online dating, and messy childhoods, and refreshing them with her personal twist, she never comes off as pathetic or over-the-top but stomach-achingly funny.

2. Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything

One of the most consistent comedians of this era, Patton Oswalt is well adjusted and so fun on ‘I Love Everything’. His ability to turn personal stories and observations into hilariously long comic tales is what makes him so different than the rest. In I Love Everything, he also talks about how he has rebuilt his and his daughters’ lives, after the untimely passing of his wife- a topic he has touched earlier in his previous special, Annihilation. This one is quirky and thoroughly entertaining!

3. Dave Chappelle: “8:46”

The short YouTube special (also available on Netflix), Dave Chappelle’s “8:46” is a furious and righteous piece on the tragic murder of George Floyd and how it led to numerous protests in the country and beyond. Even though this monologue is regressive and talks about his own feelings and rage associated with the incident, it is powerful and thought provoking. It proves what a great comedian he is, making this maybe one of his best works yet.

4. Leslie Jones: Time Machine

Leslie Jones has a compelling stage presence on this show which is both silly yet so good! One of the best things about this show is, as also reflected in the name ‘Time Machine’ itself, the way she portrays time travelling. One of the highlights is her dance to capture the Prince’s attention.  The cadence and spectacle her current self and the goofier version of her is what makes this show stand out.

5. Hannah Gadsby: Douglas

Douglas in Hannah Gadsby is less consistent than the famous predecessor Nanette, but her intense love of maps and structure makes the show funny and special.  Douglas begins the special by explaining the whole arc of the hour in minute detail and manages to produce gut-level laughter! All in all, this one is more fun than expected and exactly what a new Gadsby special should be.
