Khalil ur Rehman Kidnapped, Beaten by Honey Trap Kidnappers

On Sunday, Lahore police arrested nine suspects, including two women, on charges of honey trapping, abducting, and robbing renowned playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar.

The incident came to light when Qamar complained with the Sundar police on July 20.

According to the complaint, Qamar received a call from a woman named Amna Urooj late at night on July 15, inviting him to her house in Bahria Town to discuss a drama project. He went to the location shared by the woman.

“I was sitting with the woman when someone knocked on the door. The woman told me it might be a delivery boy as she had ordered some food,” Qamar stated in the first information report (FIR). The suspects include two women.

He added that seven armed men entered the room, held him at gunpoint, and demanded his belongings, including his car keys, Rs6,000 in cash, and a mobile phone worth Rs110,000. The suspects obtained his ATM card and withdrew Rs267,000 from a nearby bank after forcibly acquiring his PIN.

Qamar further stated that the suspects took him to various locations in his car, and tortured him emotionally and physically, before abandoning him at a deserted location.

The Sundar Police Station registered a case of robbery and abduction against the unidentified suspects and launched an investigation.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that a special police team was formed to arrest the suspects. The investigation revealed that the playwright was honey-trapped by a woman who, along with her accomplices, abducted and robbed him.

The official said nine suspects, including two women, were arrested, and the police recovered all of Qamar’s belongings. The names of the arrested suspects have not been disclosed. A press conference by the police on the matter is expected today.

Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar’s career, which spans several decades, has been marked by controversy. He has faced criticism for his outspoken views and public disputes, particularly with actress Mahira Khan and activist Marvi Sirmed. Despite these controversies, he remains a prominent figure in Pakistani television and film, with a loyal fan base that admires his work.

Pakistani Banks Impose New Taxes on Netflix Subscriptions!

  • The new Finance Bill 2024 introduces further taxes on tech companies operating in Pakistan, with Netflix recently receiving a notice from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for over Rs. 200 million in income tax, reflecting increased scrutiny on offshore digital service providers.

Pakistani banks are now levying new taxes on Netflix subscription fees due to recent directives from the Sindh Revenue Board (SRB).

The SRB, which last year imposed a 13 percent provincial sales tax on advertisement services, has now expanded its tax scope to include the streaming service.

Reports from various local media indicate that Netflix users in Pakistan must now pay a 3 percent Sales Tax on IT Services when using debit or credit cards.

Additionally, subscribers face a 5 percent Advance Tax on International Transactions (for tax filers) and a 4 percent Card Transaction Charge, which includes Federal Excise Duty. For non-filers, the advance tax on international transactions increases to 10 percent.

Banks have been appointed as withholding agents for the SRB to collect these taxes. This follows the implementation of the Sindh Sales Tax Special Procedure (Tax on Specified Services) Rules, 2023, which designates certain banks and entities authorized by the State Bank of Pakistan as collecting agents for sales tax on IT and advertisement services.

According to these rules, a 3 percent tax is imposed on services provided by software or IT-based system development consultants, including cloud-based content streaming services like Netflix, for payments made through a collection agent to any non-resident service provider.

Furthermore, the new Finance Bill 2024 introduces a tax on tech companies earning income in Pakistan through digital means. Consequently, Netflix, due to its business operations in Pakistan, is now required to pay taxes for charging customers in the region.

Recently, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) issued a notice to Netflix for the recovery of over Rs. 200 million in income tax under section 6 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

Offshore digital service providers, including Netflix, have been criticized for using Double Taxation Agreements (DTA) to avoid taxes. Section 6 was introduced by the government to ensure that non-resident entities receiving income from Pakistan pay the necessary taxes.

These tax changes are expected to have a direct impact on consumers, as the additional costs are likely to be transferred to Netflix subscribers.

Noorima Rehan’s verses follow, to bridge and connect Nizam ud Din Torwali’s and Zeb Bangash; “Beete hoye ansuon ki yaaryaan samo ke | Ajab kahanyon ki mein humrah”, (Embracing the friendship that outlives the tears | I join a fellowship of travelers carrying tall tales.)

As the song progresses, Zeb Bangash’s soothing vocals, harmonized with Xulfi’s composition, offer a message of hope. “Chahaton ke bhi rastay kayi | Chun lo koi,” (The paths to Love are numerous | Choose any which one), she sings, reminding listeners that the paths to love are numerous and it is up to us to choose which to take.

The song ends as the beast and bird symbolically return to Eden – an eternal spring that awaits those who travel life’s path without regret or reservation.
