Nike Sues Brooklyn-based Company Over “Satan Shoes” that Contain Human Blood

World’s largest supplier and manufacturer of athletic shoes, Nike sues Brooklyn-based art collective namely known as MSCHF, over a controversial pair of “Satan Shoes.” The shoes feature an inverted cross, a pentagram, the words “Luke 10:18” from the bible, and human blood.

Only 666 pieces of these satanic shoes were made by the art collective in collaboration with rapper Lil Nas using modified Nike Air Max 97s.  The launch took place right after Lil Nas’s latest song Montero (Call Me By Your Name), released on Friday. In the music video uploaded on YouTube, the rapper is seen sliding down a stripper pole wearing the red and black pair of trainers, from heaven to hell.

As soon as this satanic pair dropped on Monday, it was sold out within a minute. Each pair cost $1,018 (£740). Nike has claimed trademark infringement.

Whose blood is in the soles of the trainers?

For the 666 pairs of trainers, members of the art collective donated their blood. A drop of blood mixed with ink (2.03 fluid ounces) sits in the trainers’ soles with a signature Nike air bubble cushioning sole.

The imagery and the shoes reference the Bible verse Luke 10:18 – “So He told them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

The product was marketed as “Exclusive.”

Nikes does not approve or authorize the customized Satan Shoes

Nikes does not approve or authorize the customized Satan Shoes, the sports shoe giant said in a filing with the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

“MSCHF and its unauthorized Satan Shoes are likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF’s products and Nike. In fact, there is already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes, based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorized or approved this product, ” the sports shoe giant said in the lawsuit.

Pakistani Startup ‘ConnectHear’ Wins Young Innovators Award

Pakistani startup “ConnectHear” has won big at World Summit Awards this year for a smartphone app for “connecting the deaf to the world.”. This particular app offers its users with hearing loss virtual sign language interpreters. The app was created 4 years ago by Azima Dhanjee and Arhum Ishtiaq. 

Any person with hearing loss can connect to this user-friendly app and instantly/remotely will be connected to an interpreter. For its meaningful innovation, the startup won the Young Innovators Award, specifically for people under the age of 26 who take action on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 

Ishtiaq, the creator of the app, spoke to an international publication. He said, “I believe it is that and the continuous innovation that helped us win this award. We were really hopeful that this time they would recognize our struggle and consistent work for the community.”

Dhanjee, whose parents are deaf, said,  “Once they announced ConnectHear as the global winner, my mom hugged me tightly as I was screaming. My parents were my inspiration for this idea. Growing up, I never felt my parents were different as we led a very normal life just like my friend’s families did. But once my schooling started and I interacted with more people, I realized how quickly people would stare at us at hospitals, parent-teacher meetings, malls, just because we would talk to each other in sign language.”

Initially, the duo helped deaf people through a Facebook page but later invented the digital tool when a deaf individual asked for help with some documents to create a credit card. Until now, the app has provided 100,000+ minutes of sign language interpretation. Other than that, they have made 600+ videos that were viewed more than 2 million times and trained over 700 people in sign language.

Pakistan Resolution Day Celebration at the Amreli Steels Circle

Amreli Steels, Pakistan’s Largest Selling Brand of Steel Bars, celebrated Pakistan Resolution Day near Dolmen Mall Clifton, Karachi, on 23rd March 2021 by recreating Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s presidential address from 23rd March 1940. The sketches of Quaid-e-Azam made from Amreli Steels rebars came to life through Projection Mapping Technology to deliver a truncated version of his original address. It was followed by a mesmerizing display of Fireworks and Lightshow.

All activities and arrangements were done with strict adherence to government-issued SOPs to avoid coronavirus spread. The entire event was covered by mainstream and digital media and also streamed live on Amreli Steels’ official Facebook page.

Speaking on occasion, Chief Operating Officer of Amreli Steels, Mr. Hadi Akberali, said that,

“Today marks the 81st anniversary of Pakistan Resolution Day. While we celebrate this landmark, we also need to reflect on this moment of history to realize how far we have come and how far we can go if we learn to rely on ourselves, our people, our resources, and our strong will. Guest of Honor,  Mr. Saleem Mandviwalla, Former Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, appreciated the celebration held on Amreli Steels Circle and regarded Amreli Steels as a brand of purpose that always plays its part beyond its financial contribution to Pakistan. He concluded by saying,

“The message of Quaid-e-Azam is especially important for the youth of this country as they will shape our future.”

This event was a follow-up to the tremendously successful activation to celebrate “Surprise Day” on 27th February 2021 at the Amreli Steels Circle. The Chief Guest on that occasion was Mr. Murtaza Wahab, Advisor to the CM Sindh. Since its unveiling in April 2018, Amreli Steels Circle has become a must-visit location for photography in Karachi.

People from all walks of life are regularly seen taking selfies and making videos of themselves and their loved ones at the Amreli Steels Circle.

This Transgender from a Military Background is Pakistan’s First Practising Transgender Lawyer

From begging on the roads to achieving her goals, Nisha Rao is the first Pakistani Transgender Lawyer from a military background.

The transgender community has faced the worst forms of rejection and discrimination in our society.  However, despite the challenges, there are a few transgender people who managed to follow their passion and turn their dreams into reality.

Many transgender people are finally gaining recognition and appreciation for becoming successful in their respective fields within our society. A case in point is  Nisha Rao, who managed to turn her insecurities into her strength and decided to stand up for herself.

She is the first transgender person to become a lawyer in Pakistan and is setting goals for not just her transgender community but for all of us out there who are yet to give up on our dreams.

The Trans Pride Society, an NGO run by Nisha Rao, assisted trans people in opening up the first-ever trans tailor shop in saddar. The inauguration of the shop just took place a few days ago. Read the full story here:

Nisha is a living example of the fact that you can always find your way – no matter how dark the path is, no matter how many obstacles you face. You stumble, you fall, but then you rise like never before, a little stronger and wiser.

Her Life and Struggles

Nisha shares that after completing her Matriculation, she decided to move from her house to a transgender community. Even though there’s no better place like home and your parents take care of your food and necessities of life, she felt more comfortable being around people she could relate to and understand her better. However, in the transgender community, you’ve got to earn your own bread for a living.

Nisha was forced to beg for a living since she was told there was no other way to earn money. She begged for a year, and that is how she earned money to study Law further. Nisha is now working on solving cases and is currently under training by her instructor.

Nisha shares that she was in grade 6 when she realized that she’s neither a female nor a male. She felt she was different in terms of her interests, her walk, and even how she conversed with people.  By the time she reached 9th grade, she had accepted herself as a transgender person and went through depression but kept silent and didn’t share it with her family.

Family Reaction on Finding Out that She’s Transgender

She reached out to her family during the time she was studying in her first year of intermediate. She has 3 brothers and 3 sisters and is the youngest of her siblings. Her family did not react as badly to the news since her parents have always supported her and doubted her gender from the beginning.

However, her father gave her a hard time for a while but eventually accepted reality and advised Nisha to follow her dreams without indulging in inappropriate activities.

Nisha says she’s proud of who she’s becoming and is ready to achieve more success further.

Sites such as Upwork and Fiverr are specially designed for freelancers, where you are required to keep working in order for you to keep your account. These sites have some rules that you must abide by in order to earn. You can start with small projects that pay less amount. These projects can vary; from content writing to graphic design, there are many fields to choose from.

Once you begin working, you must focus on building on the portfolio by providing excellent services and submitting work within the allotted time. Once your portfolio looks good and your previous clients leave good reviews about you on the site,  more and more international clients assign you with projects. It depends on how much work you can pull through within a month but on average, if you work 5-6 days a week, 8 hours a day, you can easily earn a 6 figure monthly salary.

To Freelance, you only require a running laptop, a running phone, a good internet connection. You can work from home, from a cafe, or even while you’re traveling. You decide your work hours, and you also get to take the day off based on your needs while earning a 6 figure salary.

Nike Celebrates its Toughest Athletes Featuring Pregnant & Lactating Women in their Latest Maternity Line Nike (M)

American multinational corporation Nike has come out with its maternity ad that features pregnant and lactating women. The ad is titled “Toughest Athletes, ” indicating that mothers are the ultimate endurance athletes. The ad stars Serena Williams and Olympia, USWNT soccer player Alex Morgan, and track stars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Perri Shakes-Drayton, Nia Ali Bianca Williams.

“Can you be an athlete? You pregnant? You, a mother? That depends,” the ad begins. “What is an athlete? Someone who moves? Sounds like you,” the narrator says. “Someone who gets it done, no matter what? You do that—someone who listens to her body. Also you. Someone who defies gravity. You. Someone who deals with the pain hits her limit and pushes past it. Pushing, pushing, pushing. Someone who earns every single win. You, you, you. So, can you be an athlete? If you aren’t, no one is.”

The ad caption says, “Motherhood looks different for everyone. But no matter what you do or how you do it, you are the toughest athlete.”

The women in the ad are wearing Nike’s maternity line, Nike (M), which launched last year in September.  The maternity line features sports bras, pullovers, tank tops and leggings. The Nike (M) collection was designed keeping in mind the ultramarathon, “Motherhood”.

This is Nike’s first-ever dedicated maternity collection which supports women during all stages of pregnancy and beyond. Whether they are lactating or dealing with postpartum pregnancy, or even losing weight following childbirth, there is everything for someone in-store.

“The more we listened to expecting mothers and postpartum mothers, the more we learned, reworked and innovated through inclusive design,” says Carmen Zolman, Nike Senior Design Director for Apparel Innovation. “It’s the project of a lifetime to work in lockstep with all kinds of mothers to bring to life a capsule that truly supports women’s relationship with the sport during such a transformative time in their lives.”

Unilever to Exclude Word ‘Normal’ From All Beauty Products

British multinational consumer goods company, Unilever, also conglomerate behind Dove soap and other bath and beauty products has announced to drop the word “normal” on the packaging of its products. Other than that, the company is also planning to make changes to the skin colour and bodies used in the advertisements of its products to push forward the notion of inclusivity.

Previously, the London-based company has faced plenty of backlash due to several advertising campaigns that have come out in the past. As top advertisers, they are setting a benchmark for others to follow and most importantly make their customers feel like they are part of the community.

Time to Change

Fair & Lovely: Last year, we also witnessed Unilever renaming its top-selling-skin-lightening brand in India “Fair & Lovely” to “Glow & Lovely” after the company faced severe backlash on promoting creams to lighter one’s skin tone by 2 – 3 shades.

Such events have occurred in the past where the company has found itself in hot waters, however, they have successfully understood the market and their consumer today and successfully transitioned into ethical advertisers by promoting inclusivity.

The president of Unilever’s beauty and personal care division, Sunny Jain told the Reuters news agency that,

“We know that removing ‘normal’ alone will not fix the problem, but we believe it is an important step towards a more inclusive definition of beauty.”

Dove: An ad for Dove body wash showed a black woman removing her top to reveal a white woman which received severe backlash on social media for months.

TRESemmé hair care: TRESemmé hair care products from South African retail stores were taken off for 10 days due to severe backlash over the advertisement by the locals.

What’s Happening Worldwide?

Unilever has not just initiated the step in the first world countries but around the world. More than 100 Unilever brands have pledged to remove the word “normal” from their packaging until March next year.

A poll was conducted on 10,000 people globally that demonstrated more than half of the people felt excluded. 70% of the people said the word in advertising had a negative effect.

No More Digitally Altering Bodies & Skin Tones

The company also pledged to not alter the body shape, size, proportion and skin tones of the models digitally that are featured in ads. We are so happy that advertising giants such as Unilever have taken steps in the right direction.

Dove’s Latest Ad Highlights the Ugly Culture of Looking for Superficial Beauty in Women When Matchmaking #StopTheBeautyTest

Dove, a personal care brand’s latest ad, has highlighted the absurd culture of families looking for perfect girls as brides for their sons in South Asia. The beauty standards in the region are quite identical for the past decades, slim, fair, not too long, not too short, not too fat, not too thin, and the list goes on.

A Common Practice is South Asia

When a suitor is looking for a woman, he visits her house with his family based on photographs that do not always display everything looks-wise. After finding out that the woman doesn’t meet the criteria, the suitor and the family clearly upset the woman and their family by saying something disrespectful or passing on comments, which upsets everyone. Instead of being courteous and making simple conversations, the suitor and their family highlight everything wrong with the woman before leaving or after. Later, reject them over a phone call because apparently, she did not meet the beauty standards.

Shameful Practice

This beauty test is not just downright shameful but also quite a challenge for women and their families as it seriously affects their mental health and self-esteem. There is no way that all women will ever fit the same beauty standards of society. Such practices should be discontinued and discouraged.

Inclusivity is Important

In today’s world, inclusivity is considered the topmost priority. We have to learn that all body types, hair types, skin types are beautiful and unlearn such prejudices. We need to start improving our list of criteria that we so profoundly set up, and open our eyes, and really understand what is important for this relationship to last. We assure you, beauty doesn’t even make it to the list.
