Pakistani Music Industry is Taking Over the Globe in 2023

The new year 2023 has just started and we already have major news from the Pakistani music industry coming in.

Thanks to our artists’ amazing talent and renowned platforms like Coke Studio among many more, Pakistani crooners are now finally getting international exposure on global platforms.

Not only is our man Ali Sethi performing at Coachella this year, but our very own rappers Young Stunners will also be performing their magic alongside Travis Scott.

This is major news for the industry, and just to add to this, Arooj Aftab, Pakistan’s first and only Grammy winner has once again been nominated for yet another Grammy – can this year get any better?

“What a time to be a Pakistani music listener,” wrote a user on Twitter (@zaidbhatti) and we can’t agree more!

The projects and platforms in 2022 gave our stars a clear path. Not only did Ali Sethi’s ‘Pasoori’ make a global imprint, but our rappers such as Eva B made it to Marvel’s Ms. Marvel!

“Pakistani musicians gathering wins left right and center!” read the tweet that detailed the accomplishments of our artists. “Young stunners performing in Abu Dhabi on the same stage as Travis Scott, Ali Sethi performing at Coachella, Kahani Suno and Pasoori on global top 100 songs charts on YouTube, and Abdul Hannan just existing,” wrote an excited Twitterati!

That’s not all – our artists have not only shown the world the talent Pakistan has but also how we openly welcome people from all walks of life and across borders.

Pakistanis are very much looking forward to Sethi rock Coachella with Indian actor and international icon Diljit Dosanjh.

“Diljit and Ali Sethi performing at Coachella is the crossover we deserve,” read a tweet.
And for those who are trying to bring the hard work of these artists down, their fans will not let you ruin the parade!

“Ali Sethi performing at Coachella, Young Stunners at Wireless music festival, Joyland in Oscars shortlist, Maula Jatt’s commercial success. The music/film/arts seem to be the only industries doing well in this country. But go ahead, let’s ban films, censor artists, and give zero funding.”

We understand your pain, but let’s celebrate the positives instead, shall we?

Karachi Eat 2023: Food, Fights & Frustration, Here’s What Went Down

Karachi Eat is one of the biggest family festivals hosted in the City of Lights. Marking 10 years of food, music, and celebrations, this year was supposed to be a milestone in history for the organisers but turned out to be a nightmare.

So what happened? The 3-day event took place at Beach View Park from 6th-8th January 2023. As usual, there were a number of stalls along with live music and some activities for families to enjoy.

However, while days 1 and 2 went by pretty well, day 3 ended on a chaotic note. Here are the reasons why day 3 turned out to be total chaos:

1. Overcrowded

While the turnout is always huge, this year it was just too much. People were bumping into one another, kids getting lost in the rush, men bumping into women, parents fighting over things, food being spilt, trash being thrown, you name it. Those who were walking were bumping into those who were eating, and this was only creating more frustration among the attendees.

2. Limited Security Arrangement

What exactly went wrong at Karachi Eat 2023?

While everyone knows that Karachi Eat is a family event and stags are not allowed, a number of them tried to enter the venue by any means necessary to take advantage of the live music and event. While some jumped over the walls, there were those who broke through the barriers placed by the security, and from a source, it was also found that some even passed on money to get in.

3. Endless Harassment

Now that the family event was no longer restricted to families and friends, the environment became nasty. Women and children were being harassed by the uncontrollable crowds, so much so that singer Kaifi Khalil had to stop his concert, he even took to social media to highlight the uncivilized behaviour at this year’s Karachi Eat 2023.

4. Overpriced Food

As usual, even though some stalls were on-point in taste and price-wise, there was plenty that was over-priced and hardly visible in quantity. Imagine thousands of hungry people standing in line for food that is not worth the hard-earned money.

5. Fights, Fights, & More Fights

Being Pakistanis we of course have a 0-tolerance policy, and these videos are exact proof of that:

Taking notice, the organizers of the Karachi Eat Festival issued an apology, they wrote:

“Over the years we have taken the brand to Lahore and Islamabad with the same aim in mind. Despite our most stringent efforts, the closing day of our 10th Eat Festival saw unruly crowd behaviour and some very unfortunate and sad incidents occurred.

“This vengeful disregard for rules and regulations gave rise to events that caused much discomfort to innocent people as gate crashers ran amuck. The crowd at the venue on Sunday was less in absolute numbers than on Saturday but because there were no unruly gate crashers, the first two days ended on a civilised note. Regardless, we are collecting the data and conducting a deeper investigation into the matter of surveillance, breach of boundary walls and the need to up the restrictions of what is brought into the arena. Our thoughts and sincere apologies for all who were affected by the unruly crowd and the innocent people who were caught in the crossfire.”

South SSP Syed Asad Raza told Images that no case had been registered about any untoward incidents at the event.

SSP Raza said that a huge crowd had gathered and some of them who did not have passes tried to enter but the management and the police closed the doors for a while. However, some people entered it by scaling low walls  “the mismanagement was partly created by physical checking of passes that led to a crowd of people gathered before entry gates,” said the officer.

He said that no one was arrested nor had a case or complaint been registered by the management of the food festival.

However, we must ask ourselves, where are we headed? The traumas that the men, women, and children faced, and witnessed, and the horror stories emerging have compelled us to reflect on what we’ve become as a society. Is the Karachi we all love and know? Pakistanis have always been praised for their generosity, is this how we treat our own people?

We hope that all the individuals are safe and sound who were present at the venue during this chaos.

Glittering Opening Ceremony Lined-up For HBL PSL 6

The HBL Pakistan Super League 6 will start with a glittering opening ceremony on 20 February with an entertainment-packed event which will include renowned artists including Atif Aslam, Imran Khan, Humaima Malick, and the HBL PSL 6 Anthem artists: Naseebo Lal, Aima Baig & Young Stunners.

Internationally acclaimed singer Atif Aslam will be making his first appearance in the HBL PSL opening ceremony. The league has been launched every year with a colourful opening ceremony since its inception in 2016. Renowned rap artist Imran Khan will also be making his debut at the HBL PSL stage.

The HBL PSL 6 opening ceremony will have some parts filmed offshore in a specially designed studio space in Turkey. The first four ceremonies were held at the Dubai International Stadium while the 2020 opening ceremony was staged at the National Stadium Karachi, and the same venue will play host to the 2021 ceremony.

As has been the tradition in earlier editions, the opening ceremony will be followed by the first match of the season, defending champions Karachi Kings will play Quetta Gladiators in the night match.

Director Commercial PCB Babar Hamid: “This year promises to be really exciting, especially the state-of-the-art technology being used to create this experience for Pakistani fans. As always, the excitement of the opening ceremony is further raised with the opening clash of the tournament, and the people in Karachi, I am sure, will look forward to seeing Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators take the field as they both enjoy a huge fan base in the city.”

The ceremony will be aired on PTV Sports & Geo Super. The opening ceremony start time will be revealed in the coming week.

Shoaib Akhtar Declares the PSL Anthem 2021 the “Worst Ever PSL Song“

The PSL anthem 2021 came out just recently featuring Naseebo Lal, Aima Baig, and Young Stunners. Very quickly, the song, ‘Groove Mera’ came under fire for odd reasons. While many were appreciating the song, some also expressed their disapproval.  Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Akhtar posted a review of the song, where he wasn’t giving out his constructive criticism but personally attacking artists involved in the song.

He said on Twitter:

“Aren’t you ashamed?” he asked the makers of the song. “My kid hasn’t spoken in three days because of this song. The people who sang this song have no idea what groove even means.”

Anoushay Ashraf and Farhan Saeed, two celebrities from the industry, pointed out how this was purely in “bad taste” and “a stupid opinion”.  Everyone is allowed to criticise, only if the criticism is creative and doesn’t attack people involved. This was indeed a low blow coming from someone like Shoaib Akhtar.

“Oh dear, this is in bad taste. One thing to not like a song, another thing to run down artists, musicians this way,” she commented on Akhtar’s video.”Big fan of Shoaib Akhtar but not the way he’s bashing the new anthem. Some people, including many of your friends, fans and family, like the track. Difference of opinion is welcome, degrading someone’s work isn’t. Don’t like the track, cool. Hating on it this way? Not cool.”

A stupid opinion indeed!

HBL PSL 6 Anthem ‘Groove Mera’ Released

The HBL Pakistan Super League 6 anthem, “Groove Mera” has been launched today. The anthem will be playing on leading TV channels. It will also be available on HBL PSL digital platforms throughout the 2021 edition of the most popular Pakistani cricket event of the calendar.

Continuing the rich tradition of entertaining HBL PSL fans with a new anthem for each season, “Groove Mera” refers to the swing and feel of cricketers’ movements. It refers to moments of finesse that one finds in the heart of every cricket match.

This year’s anthem also reflects the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic. As most of the fans will be watching Pakistan’s biggest sporting event remotely, this anthem cheers both players on the field and their fans at home as they celebrate their groove!

The anthem is a celebration of Pakistan’s musical diversity. The mix of artists is fascinating as it represents artists from opposite ends of Pakistan’s musical spectrum. The anthem brings together voices from Pakistan’s rich musical landscape: regional folk and urban sounds of pop and hip-hop.

Singer Naseebo Lal is an industry veteran and cultural icon, whose grasp over regional tradition is acknowledged by fans and music critics.

Aima Baig is considered the pop symbol of this generation, having voiced some of Pakistan’s biggest hits in the past few years. Alongside these two powerhouse female artists, the HBL PSL 6 anthem features hip-hop superstars, Young Stunners, who with their grounded voice and social outlook have gained an unprecedented online following.

The video, directed by Fida Moin, includes six leading cricketers who would be featuring for their respective franchises in the tournament, the players are Shadab Khan (Islamabad United) Shan Masood (Multan Sultans), Sarfraz Ahmed (Quetta Gladiators), Babar Azam (Karachi Kings), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Lahore Qalandars) and Wahab Riaz (Peshawar Zalmi).

Director Commercial PCB Babar Hamid: “The HBL Pakistan Super League 6 anthem ‘Groove Mera’ is the latest addition to the blockbuster anthems that the league has produced over the years. Each year we have endeavoured to produce top-quality HBL PSL anthems, and all our previous anthems have made a big impact and have been received very well by our fans in Pakistan and abroad.

“This year’s anthem has been sung by the legendary Naseebo Lal and features the hugely popular star Aima Baig along with the young sensation Young Stunners. We are confident that the fans will appreciate the anthem, and it will make them groove like the anthems of the past did.

“Meanwhile, we are fully focused and as always working around-the-clock with the sole intention of delivering another exciting and world-class edition of the HBL PSL which will once again provide rich entertainment through quality cricket with some of the biggest T20 stars in the world plying their trade at the National Stadium and Gaddafi Stadium.

“The fans in Karachi and Lahore that will be re-entering the stadiums after a year-long gap will have a lot to look forward to both with in terms of the on-field action and ‘Groove Mera’ entertaining them in the stands!”

Naseebo Lal: “It feels great to be a part of the anthem because I have never done a song like this where I have enjoyed myself so much.”

Aima Baig: “I feel overwhelmed – it’s been an amazing journey, and I’m really thankful for the opportunity. The vibe of the anthem is very street and urban with elements of festival EDM.”
