Exclusive: Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award Winner Tanzila Khan Makes Major Announcements

Tanzila Khan has become Pakistan’s pride, she is the first-ever recipient of the Prince’s Trust International Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award, sponsored by Charlotte Tilbury.

An inspirational rights activist and entrepreneur, Khan is making a difference for young girls in Pakistan by breaking stereotypes. No matter how many challenges she had to face in her way, Khan has defied all odds and has left us in awe.

Growing up with a disability, which has never held her back, Tanzila Khan became a writer at the mere age of 16, and even produced a film called ‘Fruit Chaat‘.

Through her platform, Girly Things, Khan aims to make menstrual healthcare an integral part of our everyday lifestyle and not just something that should only be discussed in whispers or in locked rooms.

In an exclusive interview with Farhat Kapadia Founder WOW360, Khan made some interesting announcements that we are eagerly looking forward to.

Collaborations Across Pakistan to Create in 10 years’ time, a sustainable Pakistan because of  Menstrual Healthcare

While speaking with us, Tanzila shares that it is visible that changes are being implemented in Pakistan slowly but gradually. People are now taking part in such conversations, hence, if one group is already working on a particular issue, she will focus on something else to take the movement forward.

To do so, she plans on collaborating with other groups who share the same vision. Moreover, instead of working through different platforms, she wants everyone to be on the same page and work as a single team to reach the goal of creating the largest menstruation movement in Pakistan to put an end to bad products and break the silence.

She believes that in 10 years’ time, a sustainable Pakistan is possible if menstruation awareness and healthcare are prompted among the masses. Moreover, she also shared that there are investors who are already showing their interest in the initiative.

Creating Dialogue Between Pakistan & Sweden

When Tanzila was asked where would she like to travel next after her girl’s trip to Egypt with her friends, she shared that for the past 9 months she has been living in Sweden for her Master’s degree and that she is trying to create some entrepreneurial  opportunities to create a bridge between both countries.

She goes on to say that she has a dream that Pakistan receives a large sum of funding from such countries for this initiative so that the startups that are stuck or have gone into the wrong hands are given the right direction. She wishes Pakistan to be known around the globe for its out-of-the-box entrepreneurial ideas, and that they are replicated by other countries.

Watching Sarmat Khoosat’s film  ‘Kamli‘, Tanzila was inspired to make her own film  “Next time when I walk in the theatre it will be when I’m on the screen”

Fruit Chaat, Disability & Comedy in Pakistan - Alchemiya

Khan’s short film Fruit Chaat is a comical approach to challenging society on sensitive topics that we all experience throughout our lives. When asked if she has another project in the pipeline, Tanzila Khan shared that there is a ‘Fruit Chaat’ web series being prepared. The script has been written, a budget has been set, casting has been done and they aim to start shooting sometime in August-September.

She also shares that after watching Sarmat Khoosat’s ‘Kamli‘, and being able to relate to it, she called ‘Fruit Chaat’ director and said that she too wants to be on the big screen with a possible movie in the making (if not a web-series).

Support Local Entrepreneurs & Make Content Accessible

Tanzila firmly believes that the day Pakistanis change their mindsets about businesses and supports startups and entrepreneurs in the country, not only will it make a massive difference to the businesses, but also to the economy. Moreover, she believes that the content made by the media needs to be more accessible to everyone. We need to be more positive towards entrepreneurs and not expect free products and services from them.

Inspirational Young Woman from Pakistan Wins First Ever Prince’s Trust International Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award

An inspirational young woman from Pakistan, Tanzila Khan, has received the first-ever Prince’s Trust International Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award, sponsored by Charlotte Tilbury. Miss Khan received the award at a ceremony held in London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Part of The Prince’s Trust Awards, the ceremony will be broadcast to audiences across the UK for the first time on ITV 26th May at 20:30.

Founded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and building on four decades of experience through The Prince’s Trust in the UK, Prince’s Trust International supports young people into work across 17 countries through employment, education and enterprise programmes. The charity is working in partnership with Amal Clooney to highlight the global work of young women who have succeeded against the odds and made a lasting difference to those around them.

Having grown up in Pakistan with a disability, Tanzila became an author at 16 and is now an entrepreneur helping to break down barriers towards health and menstrual products.

According to the World Bank, an estimated 500 million lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management. To help address this, Tanzila and her team founded a mobile application and website, Girlythings.pk.

“I was travelling across the world, writing books and a lot of good things were happening,” Tanzila said. “Despite this, I still didn’t have access to menstrual healthcare and, I thought, this has to be worked on. I decided to work on the solution myself”.

Girlythings works to give better access to menstrual, reproductive health and maternity products to women anonymously helping to ignite conversation on a sensitive topic. Looking to the future, Tanzila hopes to continue challenging stigmas and supporting menstruators across the world.

On Tuesday 24th May, Tanzila attended a star-studded ceremony at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane to receive her award and meet with guests including His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

During the ceremony, Amal Clooney said:

“It’s an honour to have been invited to present an award by Prince’s Trust International. And a particular pleasure to be able to champion young women making a difference in their communities.

“Our awardee took every stereotype and debunked it; each barrier she faced, and broke it. She refuses to accept the status quo – and fights to change it not just for herself but for all girls and all those living with disabilities.

“Her advocacy brings light to the darkest places – and I hope that after receiving this award, she will be able to shine even more brightly”.

Commenting on the win, Tanzila Khan added:

“It is a real honour to receive this award and get recognition for Girlythings.pk that is a start-up about menstrual healthcare. I have deep respect for the courage that Amal Clooney has to speak up and work for women and human rights and I’m hopeful about the opportunities that this award will open up.

“I fundamentally believe that all menstruators should have the right to access menstrual products and that these conversations should be happening openly and without prejudice.

“My organisation, Girlthings, aims to make menstrual healthcare an integral part of our conversation about lifestyle and not a stigmatized secret. We offer a support system for other menstruators to connect, share knowledge and empower each other”.

Pakistani Woman in Wheelchair Tanzila Khan Breaks Barriers, Moves to Sweden for Master’s Degree

In Pakistan, it is relatively difficult for differently-abled individuals to survive or carry out their day to day tasks without help due to the lack of resources set for their unique needs. Most public spaces aren’t even wheelchair friendly, a necessary infrastructure attribute in most countries. Thus, most differently-abled individuals suffer at the hands of lack of resources and are never given the opportunity to excel in their lives.

Due to this very reason, and including many other factors, we don’t see differently-abled individuals in public spheres. Despite all this, one bright woman, Tanzila Khan from Punjab, an activist and entrepreneur, has broken barriers and is set to redefine success on her own terms despite being differently-abled.

Tanzila is the founder of Girlythings. Pk, a business that delivers sanitary napkins and other products with love and care. She is on a mission to help improve women’s health. Just this month, Tanzila and her 2 other differently-abled friends made it local headlines as the trio on wheelchairs travelled to Egypt for a vacation.

After reading up on their journey, one would wonder what these incredible women have next on their list? Well, we know what Tanzila is up to. She has done it again and made it to Europe for her Master’s degree, particularly in Sweden. She announced the news on social media.

She wrote in her Instagram post, “Traveling can make you delusional. It can make you believe you can do what seems impossible. It can unleash potential. It can also able disabled. My earlier solo trip to Turkey followed by a trip to Egypt with my wheelchair buddies made me dream bigger, and now I am in Europe to pursue my Masters and set an example of Independent living for other people with disabilities.”

She added, “Sweden is beautiful, accessible, and I have been cooking, cleaning, studying, buying groceries and travelling around running errands. My mind is already working on business ideas, travel plans and creativity. This is what travelling does to you. It makes you a phoenix. It makes you overcome what you thought you could never. I hope I am able to inspire other people with disabilities to enjoy life and be an asset, and I hope families of people with disabilities become as supportive as my family has been to me.”

Three Pakistani Women in Wheelchair Travel Alone to Egypt for a Vacation

Differently-abled people in Pakistan always suffer due to the infrastructure, which does not fit their unique needs. While many differently-abled people suffer due to lack of facilities in the country, three Pakistani women took matters into their own hands. They traveled to Egypt for a vacation on their own.

An activist and entrepreneur, Tanzila Khan from Punjab, is on a mission to help improve women’s health. Zargoona Wadood from Quetta, whose work focuses on women with disabilities, and Afshan Afridi from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, working in the development sector since 2013, connected and decided to travel together.

Why did Khan, Wadood, and Afridi choose Egypt to travel solo?

Khan, Wadood, and Afridi chose Egypt as their destination because of its rich history. All three of them are fascinated by Egypt due to its incredible history and, of course, the culture. Additionally, the halal food was a plus point for them. Moreover, the three admire Prophet Musa greatly, and so this added up to the list of things that persuaded them to choose Egypt to travel to.

Remembering her joyous trip, Khan shared some fun facts on her Instagram page from her trip to Egypt.

She wrote that all three of them fought thrice while in Egypt. “We all fought thrice during this trip and had arguments only to break into laughters in minutes feeling like reality TV contestants”. The second was breaking down and sobbing at different intervals.

She wrote, ” Each one of us broke down at one point at different moments. Sat sobbing like schoolgirls at beautiful locations. It has taken us so long to be this Indpendent on our own terms. One common ground was recalling how our fathers have been our pillars of support and without them we cant be anywhere. Salute to all Babas of the world.”

She also mentioned how challenging it was for them to travel solo, but they made it happen by hook or crook.

The language barrier was a significant problem for them. However, they managed to speak to their drivers and explain how they wish to be handled. “We had to be really loud and vocal on how we want to be handled and it works no matter what country it is.”

On not having an accessible washroom in a restaurant, Afshan fell into one cubicle. However, she managed to get on her chair and move on as nothing had happened. Another challenge was to pay double for accessible rooms. They also had to book two cars instead of one since their wheelchairs went into another. Khan wrote, “We spent DOUBLE of what we had intended. Let’s call it disability travel tax.”

Regardless, the three will soon travel again and hopefully share unique snippets with us on social media.
