Unilever Pakistan Takes Initiative to Reduce & Reuse Plastic #FacethePlastic

Those days are gone when we were not aware of the destruction we are causing to Earth. Even multinational consumer goods company, Unilever has time and again pointed out the use of plastic and promoted sustainable living. In Pakistan, Unilever has often been spotted carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaigns and other activities to make the planet a better place to live in the future.

This time, however, Unilever Pakistan wants us to #FacethePlastic as a genuine pressing problem. More than 3.3M tons of plastic is wasted each year in Pakistan equating to about twice the height of the K2 mountain. Now, Unilever aims to reduce it.

What is Unilever Doing to Solve the Plastic Issue?

Unilever is making sure that plastic stays in the economy but out of our environment. Unilever’s key goal is to create a circular economy system for plastics waste management in Pakistan. This will be done by testing new economic models, industrial, and consumer behaviour, policy shift and, engaging the private sector, and other non-traditional partners.

Unilever’s 2025 Plastic Packaging Commitment

Last year, Unilever made a plastic packaging commitment that by 2025 it will halve its use of virgin plastic, by reducing its absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and accelerating its use of recycled plastic and also help collect and process more plastic packaging than it sells. Secondly, by accelerating use of recycled plastic in their packaging.

5 Pakistani Women Who Lent Their Star Power to United Nations

Celebrities and influencers worldwide come forward and joined hands with the United Nations, an intergovernmental organization, to immediately build force and support global matters that require attention.  The main aim of the UN is to maintain international security and peace.

In Pakistan, celebrities have also become UN ambassadors for many issues. The reason celebrities are appointed as brand ambassadors is that they tend to lend their star power and reach to inform people far and wide.

Following are 5 Pakistani female celebrities who have come forward and join hands with the UN:

Hadiqa Kiani

Pakistani singer, songwriter, and philanthropist, Hadiqa Kiani was selected as a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill ambassador. She is the first woman in Pakistan to become a Goodwill ambassador who was appointed by the United Nations. Hadiqa has received numerous local and international awards and also has performed at the most prestigious venues in the world. She has also received the fourth highest Pakistan civilian award for her contributions to music, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. 

Begum Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah

In 1964, Begum Shaista Ikramullah was Pakistan’s delegate to the UN and ambassador to Morocco. She was a renowned Bengal politician, diplomat, writer, and one of the women who shaped the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at a United Nations (UN) exhibition. She was also the first Muslim woman to earn a Ph.D. from the University of London.

Muniba Mazari

Known as the Iron Lady of Pakistan, Muniba Mazari is a Pakistani activist, anchor artist, model, singer, and motivational speaker. In 2015, Mazari became the National Ambassador for UN Women Pakistan after being shortlisted in the 100 inspirational Women. In 2016, Mazari was also shortlisted in the Forbes 30 under 30 lists for 2016.

Malala Yousuf Zai

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist, and a Nobel Laureate appointed in 2017 as United Nations Messenger of Peace to raise awareness of girls’ education. Malala was shot in the head in 2012 by the Taliban for promoting female education in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan.

Mahira Khan

Mahira Khan was appointed as a national goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2019. In her capacity, the actress has raised awareness of the dilemma of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. She has openly refused to endorse skin-lightening creams in Pakistan and spoken against sexual violence in the region. Khan’s main goal is to work on social issues that persist within Pakistani culture through film and Tv.

4. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a journalist, activist and filmmaker. Her documentary A Girl In The River: The Price of Forgiveness won two Oscars to Pakistan and she also won an Academy Award for Saving Face.

5. Fatima Ali Jinnah

Fatima Ali Jinnah also popularly known as Madar e Millat, was a stateswoman, a politician, a dental surgeon and one of the leading female founders of Pakistan. She was the younger sister of Qaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who lived her life serving her nation and her legacy is known for her devotion to her elder brother, her contribution to civil rights and her struggle in the Pakistan Movement.
