Aurat March 2021 Highlighted their Demands for Women on International Women’s Day

Aurat March 2021 took place in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad today and man we are living for the slogans! Each year, not just women but also men come up with creative slogans that go viral on social media. Reportedly, this year, the attendance of the participants was relatively low as compared to previous years due to the pandemic at hand. However, the organizers urged people to post their placards online if they can’t make up it to the march.

There were many groups of women present in Karachi’s Frere Hall of which we spoke to the Fisherfolk community and found out what their issues at hand were:

Even front line workers and doctors faced a great deal of difficulty as a result of the pandemic. In many cases, women were the first ones to lose their jobs expressed the women at the march

What were the demands of women this year?

Women in each major city of Pakistan are going through different sets of issues. The organizeers summed up the most prevelants ones and put it up on social media so masses are informed as to why they march, what’s their purpose, and what are the probelms.

Lahore

On twitter, Aurat march Lahore announced many demands which includs better healthcare budget, drug addiction a public health issue, consent based mandatory admission in school, safe abortion facilities, right to healthcare for transgender community, community and envoirnmental health, forced gender-reassignment medical procedures, equitable Covid-19 Vaccine rollout, acknowledge unpaid labour, end privatizing healthcare, rehabilitative programs for women, and access to contraceptives. 

Karachi

15 point agenda was set for Karachi by Aurat March for this year! It is a condensed version of a complete charter of demands & focuses broadly on the theme of gender-based violence inflicted upon women, transgender & non-binary persons.

International women day is being celebrated worldwide, where countries acknowledge great efforts made by their women in different fields despite them facing diverse challenges such as pay gap, gender bias, stereotypes, and norms. These women have not just carved a benchmark for themselves but also set a bar for other women around them to follow. From women in the army, aviation, politicians, doctors, and teachers, basically from all walks of life, we see you, recognise your efforts, and appreciate you for your work and dedication.

Aurat March 2021: A Significant Movement in Pakistan

In Pakistan, Aurat March has become a significant movement where men and women march in major cities of the country to demand rights for women. Aurat March is trending on Twitter as the public is out right now on the roads in Karachi and Lahore. The capital city, however, revoked the march. Right now, women are outside the National press club demanding the right to protest.

Here is a 15 point agenda for this year. These demands are there to hope for and build a more equal, inclusive, and just world!

Mahira Khan Reveals Why She Attends the Aurat March Every Year

Pakistan’s heartthrob, Mahira Khan, appeared in Mira Sethi’s talkshow and revealed exciting details about her childhood, values taught in her by her parents, and how she is expected to behave. The star also revealed why she attends Aurat March every year.

Khan said she makes it a point to attend Aurat March every year because she believes her fame has given her voice some weight, which means if she is at a place, all eyes will turn, and people will be ready to hear what she has to say. The presence of famous A-listers like her highlights the significance of March.

“It’s important for me to march every year because my voice has weight. When I go to the Aurat March, I make it a point to tell everyone that this is what I believe in. It does not benefit me but it is important for the women here, so I will represent them. Nobody will go and ask them to explain their slogans and chants, but the media comes to me. So I want to utilise my two minutes to explain and educate on behalf of those women.”

Mera Jism Meri Marzi: I am a human, and this is my body, so it is up to me whether I allow you to stare at it or touch it or not.

Mahira explains what Mera Jism Meri Marzi means, a popular slogan that has become part of a great controversy after it went viral on social media. Many assumed it meant wearing short clothes or stripping clothes off. Khan cleared it out and said,

“When I say Mera Jism Meri Marzi, I don’t mean I want to strip my clothes off and run around naked!” asserted the celebrity. “I mean to say that I am a human and this is my body, so it is up to me whether I allow you to stare at it or touch it, or not. It means that I can report to you if you don’t comply. It means that I can take an action against you if you harass me because you have no right over MY body.”

Mahira also spoke about her childhood; she said she lived in a small house and has had enough freedom a child should, which didn’t mean any curfews or boundaries.

“We lived in a small house, just the four of us, and there was this freedom. We were like roommates. My parents had me after eight years of their marriage. They were doing their own thing and enter these two children. So they gave us that freedom, which by the way, wasn’t about having no boundaries and curfews. It was the freedom to choose. My father especially would ask us, ‘Who do you want to be, what do you want to eat?’ They would never tell us they want us to be this or that. They just let us take our own decisions,” said Khan.
