The top-tier internship program in Canada offers students from various universities the chance to collaborate on projects. This paid international internship provides life-changing opportunities by allowing students to connect with peers from different countries and institutions.

Through this collaborative experience, interns can build a global network of Mitacs Globalink alumni, fostering cooperation for a brighter future. For instance, a student from Harvard collaborated with Queen’s University to design an instrument for the rapid screening of pathogens causing Lyme disease. Similarly, researchers from the University of Alberta and Yukon University are working with mining companies to restore vegetation in Yukon mines.

The Global Research Internship for international students is a highly competitive program designed to attract talented researchers from Mitacs’ partner institutions in Canada. The primary goal of this internship is to create a bridge between Canada and emerging global research talent. Mitacs also offers interns the opportunity to attend industry events, government events, and professional development courses during their time in Canada.

This enables them to fully experience the benefits of the Mitacs Globalink Canada internship program while expanding their knowledge and skills. Additionally, 95% of interns report positive impacts from this experience. Alumni of this program who wish to return to Canada for further studies may also become eligible for the Globalink Graduate Fellowship.

2025 Fulbright Applications Now Open for Pakistanis

The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened applications for the 2025 Fulbright Scholar Program.  This prestigious initiative will select around 15 scholars for the 2025 academic year.

Of these positions, 13 are designated for early-career faculty members and researchers with 2-7 years of experience, while the remaining two spots are allocated for senior scholars who completed their Ph.D. or terminal degree 8-15 years ago.

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers up to 12 months of opportunities for lecturing, post-doctoral research, or a combination of both at a U.S. college or university.

Participants will engage in academic and cultural exchanges, sharing insights about Pakistan’s society and culture with U.S. students, colleagues, and community groups.

Upon returning to Pakistan, scholars are expected to contribute to the country’s development by integrating their U.S. experiences into their academic and professional work.

Program Benefits

The program provides a comprehensive package that includes airfare, an incidental research allowance, a living stipend, and health insurance. Additionally, the program covers the visa application process and offers financial support for one accompanying dependent.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to scholars, professionals, and artists from all fields, except clinical medicine. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree and have been in their current academic role for at least two years. Those who have recently returned from educational experiences in the United States must have spent at least two years in Pakistan before applying.\

Ineligibility Criteria

  • Individuals holding dual U.S./Pakistani citizenship or those with a spouse, parent, or child over 18 years of age who holds U.S. citizenship or permanent residency are not eligible.
  • Employees of Fulbright, the U.S. Department of State, USAID, and their immediate family members are ineligible to apply.
  • Those currently studying or working in the U.S. on a visa are also ineligible.
  • Any form of plagiarism, fraudulent publications, or misrepresentation will lead to immediate disqualification.

Raza’s academic journey began at Karachi Grammar School and the United World College (UWC) in Singapore. His father, Yousuf Nazar, is an economist frequently featured on Geo News discussing economic matters. Raza earned his law degree from the London School of Economics (LSE), where he served as President of the LSE Law Society.

At LSE, he also co-founded the LSE Future of Pakistan conference, an annual event that gathers students, experts, and ministers. Raza was recognized as one of the Top 5 Future Lawyers (One’s To Watch) by Bright Network and later trained as a lawyer at the Magic Circle law firm, Slaughter and May.

At Oxford, Raza pursued a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), which the university describes as “the most highly regarded taught masters-level qualification in the Common Law world.” He is among a select group of Pakistanis who have completed the BCL, including former Prime Minister Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and former President Wasim Sajjad.

In an interview with APP, Ambassador Armellin revealed that a groundbreaking IRI initiative will be launched next month to provide access to education for millions of out-of-school children. Supported by UNESCO, this pioneering “Radio Education” program, in collaboration with local partners, aims to bridge educational gaps and empower underprivileged communities across Pakistan.

With a literacy rate of 62% and significant disparities in educational access, Pakistan faces substantial challenges. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent “Education Emergency” seeks to integrate millions of out-of-school children into the educational system.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s journey towards inclusive education and economic progress. Pakistan’s Punjab Province to Establish Two More Schools for Transpersons

The government of Punjab, Pakistan, has announced plans to establish two new schools specifically for the transgender community in Lahore, expanding on the existing educational infrastructure designed to support and uplift transpersons in the region. These new schools will be located in Raiwind and Wagah, complementing the already operational school situated in front of Barkat Market.

Support and Resources for Transgender Students

The School Education Department (SED) will provide free books, stationery, and uniforms to transgender students across all three schools. In addition, each student will be awarded a scholarship of Rs10,000, divided into Rs5,000 for stationery and books and Rs5,000 for travel allowance, contingent upon maintaining 80% attendance.

Punjab Government’s Commitment to Inclusive Education

This initiative is a significant part of the government’s broader efforts to promote inclusive education and provide equal opportunities for the transgender community. The establishment of these new schools follows earlier initiatives that saw similar educational institutions set up in Multan, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

In a move that underscores the government’s commitment to inclusivity, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced in April the establishment of a transgender school at the division level. Additionally, she highlighted plans to provide educational facilities for children with special needs in at least one government school in each district.

Currently, nine out of the 11 divisions in Punjab have schools dedicated to the transgender community, an initiative originally undertaken by the previous Usman Buzdar government. On Thursday, July 8th, transgender people from Multan were able to attend their first class at a school in the Gulgasht area. The school is a pilot project and is established under “Transeducation”. The building was inaugurated by the Punjab government. It is located in the Government Girls Comprehensive Higher Secondary School. According to South Punjab Education Secretary Dr. Ehtesham Anwar, up till now, 18 trans students have been registered in the school in its first phase.

Remembering Naseema Kapadia, The “Iron Lady” of St Joseph’s Convent School who Pioneered Computer Education

  • Naseema Kapadia, an educationist for over 43 years, joined St. Joseph’s Convent High School in 1980, became Headmistress of the Cambridge Section in 2010, and retired in 2023, leaving a lasting impact with her progressive mindset and problem-solving skills.

Naseema Kapadia was a passionate educationist for over 43 years. She joined St Joseph’s Convent High School in 1980 as a substitute teacher after being convinced by Sister Zinia Pinto, Principal of SJC.

A lifelong bond was formed and grew stronger with each passing year culminating in her becoming the Headmistress of the Cambridge Section in 2010, a position from which she retired in August 2023.

She was blessed with a progressive mindset and approached all challenges positively. She left a lasting impact on whomever she met with her intelligence, captivating smile, and the ability always to find a solution.

She impacted the lives of many students over 43 years and as the tributes and messages poured in, it was heartening to see the love, warmth, and appreciation.

NKI have worked with Naseema Kapadia for 43 years. She was a remarkable woman with such a zest for life. She was innovative, progressive and untiring in her efforts to provide quality education to girls. Her absence is a void which no one can fill. She was my friend, loving and caring. I miss her.

A Trailblazer in the Field of Computer Education in Pakistani Schools: Notable Achievements

Mrs Naseema Kapadia was elected as the Chairperson of PACES ( Pakistan Association of Computer Education in Schools ), a project created to spread computer literacy in Pakistani schools. It was set up as a collaboration with BCCI initially and later with IBM and was led by her from 1987 – 2003.

 

Naseema trained over 1000 master trainers and introduced the project to over 250 schools in Pakistan. PACES also trained teachers to teach the O-level Computer Science Syllabus. The first batch of O- O-level students ( 25 in total ) took the CIE exam from St Joseph’s Covent in 1990 and fared exceptionally well from that year onwards to date.

From then onwards, the spread of computer education in schools moved at a significant pace forward. PACES played a pivotal role in pioneering computer education in schools and also made the syllabus for the Matric Board when for the first time in 1994 it was introduced as a subject.

One of the most important milestones in her career as an educationist was co-authoring the book “ Exploring Computer Science “ which was published by OUP (Oxford University Press) and was approved by the Federal Government to be used as a textbook for the Metric Board Examinations.

The Agha Khan Board (AKB) was the first to introduce this.  She was also on the Agha Kham University Board for Computer Studies and attended many Cambridge University Conferences representing St Joseph’s Convent School.

UNESCO invited Mrs Kapadia as the Chairperson of PACES to attend the International Conference on IT Education in Moscow, Russia in March 2000.

The Rotary Club of Karachi, Peshawar University, and St. Joseph’s Convent School awarded her for pioneering computer education in schools.

She coordinated with the British Council on a project called ‘Connecting Classrooms ‘ and headed most of the National and International Projects for SJC.

She was the founding President for the Sarmast Rotary Club, the only breakfast club in Karachi in those times.

Chairperson Synergy : The Cambridge Community Schools

After she retired from St Joseph’s Convent, Mrs Kapadia was elected as the Chairperson of Synergy, a Cambridge Community of Schools.

As the Chair, she curated and organized an Art Exhibition entitled “ Interpretations of Reality “ along with Ms. Nausheen Hammad, Secretary of Synergy. The event showcased the creative brilliance of students from grades 9,10 and 11 from over 20 Cambridge Schools in Pakistan. This was the first of its kind event involving students directly and was hosted at St. Michael’s Covent School.

Mr Shahid Ashraf, Deputy Country Director CAIE, and Manager of Sindh CAIE Ms. Hajra Sajjad played a pivotal role in making the exhibition a reality.

Early Years

She graduated from the Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics Bombay University with an Honors degree in Public Finance & Administration. At the time she was the first woman to be elected as the President of the Student Union in a male-dominated college.

After moving to Pakistan, she applied for a job at PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) and was appointed in 1959 as a Market Research Supervisor. At the time she was one of the few women in Pakistan engaged in this specialized field.

 The kindest soul and at the forefront of all major developments at St. Joseph’s Convent Cambridge Section. When I joined SJC Miss Naseema Kapadia was a teacher learning computers herself to introduce it to the students of the Cambridge section.

She introduced many activities and events at the Cambridge section of SJC. The most notable of which include:

  • Annual Computer and Art Exhibition

  • TCF Ubhartay Sitaray where many of her students won each year for their singing and musical abilities
  • Connecting Classrooms with the British Council
  • Woman of Substance Awards, that invited alumni who have achieved and given back to society in various fields
  • Field trips for students to the northern areas of Pakistan
  • School Trips for teachers to various parts of PakistanI

 

 I have worked with Naseema Kapadia for 43 years. She was a remarkable woman with such a zest for life. She was innovative, progressive and untiring in her efforts to provide quality education to girls. Her absence is a void which no one can fill. She was my friend, loving and caring. Mrs Naseema Kapadia, Headmistress, St Joseph’s Convent, Cambridge section was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award in the Education category of the Biz Today International Business Women’s Awards 2021.

The Sindh Govt also awarded Mrs Kapadia for for her many years of dedication in the field of education and pioneering Computer Education in Pakistan. We wish her all the success and May she continue to inspire, empower and impact all those around

The University of Oxford has committed to offering scholarships to students from Balochistan through the Benazir Scholarship Program.

This agreement was formalized between Oxford University and the Balochistan government, with Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti and Malala Yousafzai, a global advocate for girls’ education, present at the signing.

The program will grant full scholarships to exceptional students from Balochistan, allowing them to pursue higher education at the renowned Oxford University, according to a statement from the press secretary to the Chief Minister of Balochistan.

Aimed at enhancing educational access and empowering Balochistan’s youth, the initiative represents a significant opportunity.

During the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti expressed pride in offering students the chance to study at Oxford University, an institution attended by leaders like Benazir Bhutto.

“Education is the key to unlocking our youth’s potential, and we are dedicated to providing them with the best opportunities,” he said.

Bugti also highlighted this achievement as a milestone for the current PPP government, which is working diligently under the leadership of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
