Sanam plays the central female character in the show. Barzakh which marks Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed’s reunion after 10 years, after their popular show Zindagi Gulzar Hai, is the only selection from South Asia at the festival scheduled to be held in Lille, France in March. 

The web series will be screened as part of the International Panorama line-up, a 12-title competitive section and is also nominated in several categories such as Best Series, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor as well as the Student Jury award and the Audience award. 

Thrilled at the selection, director Asim Abbasi said, “At its core, Barzakh is a family drama framed within a world of supernatural beings and otherworldly events. The genesis of the story stemmed from a personal loss and the fears that came with it, making me realize that love is indeed eternal and nudging me to write a story about it.

The selection of Barzakh at the Series Mania is such a momentous yet humbling occasion for all of us, not only because it’s a show that’s so close to my heart but also because the selection is such a strong validation of our belief in this story which is now finding its way amongst the best in the world.”

Held annually at Lille in France, the Series Mania festival, since its inception in 2010, has been instrumental in recognizing and curating the best series across the world. The festival brings together the best screenwriters, directors, and artists together under one roof.

“This series was conceptualized during the pandemic when all pre-defined notions of love, life, death, and beyond were going through a seismic shift. Online work, mourning, and celebrations had led to a sort of haze and confusion about what was real. 

Here lay the genesis of the show which is essentially a family reunion, to which the living and the dead are all invited. Set in the Hunza valley with its myths and legends, Asim Abbasi’s quirky, funny, deeply philosophical, and layered writing, a dollop of magic realism, and bringing Fawad Khan back…all added up to a show that needed to be made.

Shot in picturesque Hunza Valley in Pakistan, Barzakh blends together magical realism and supernatural fantasy within a family reunion setting and deals with themes of love, loss, and reconciliation.

At just 13 years old, Saniya started documenting her poetry in a diary, addressing issues close to her heart. “When my family relocated to Govandi, I was five. Initially, we faced rejection. Childhood loneliness was my companion. Now, those same children who once bullied me claim to be my friends.”

“Rap music, to me, is profoundly intimate. It’s not just about my own struggles, but about the broader society and the individuals within it,” she underscores. Her recent endeavor, “Shaher,” unveiled as a six-track EP in October of last year, intricately weaves together themes reflective of the nation’s challenges.

For instance, the title track sheds light on corruption plaguing the police and politicians in her neighborhood of Govandi; “Nalayak” delves into the turmoil and identity crises of student life, while “Mai Ek Shayara Hoon” explores the scrutiny and spotlight faced by female rappers.

Her provocative “diss tracks” addressing the state of her hometown haven’t escaped notice. She’s already been visited by a local politician questioning her audacity. While one might anticipate a reference to Mirza Ghalib’s iconic line “Har Ek Baat Pe Kehte Ho Tum Ke Tu Kya Hai” (“On every single matter, you question my identity”), the young artist has her response.

“I incorporated it into the title track of ‘Shaher.’ They said, ‘You write a lot, we’ll be watching you and your work closely next time…’ ” she shares.

When asked about the significance of her art, she responds without hesitation. “We tend to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing, yet readily criticize acts of kindness,” she asserts. “There are countless untold stories, silenced voices. Since I’m acquainted with these narratives, I must convey them. I’ll be the conduit; I’ll be the voice for those unable to speak their truth.”
