12 YouTubers Arrested in Lahore for Harassing, Looting Transgenders

  • At least 12 YouTubers were arrested FOR allegedly harassing transgenders and looting cash and valuables
  • The incident took place in Lahore
  • Data Darbar police made the arrests

During the distribution of free HIV AIDS and STI tests in collaboration with Dostana Mail Health Society, a group of transgenders were harassed and looted by YouTubers.

While carrying out this activity, they were approached by a group of YouTubers, who at first passed indecent comments and slurs, and then harassed and looted the trans members.

The booked suspects were identified as Naem Nadeem, Usman, Zubair, Mujahid Ali, Ansar Bhatti, Saleem Haider, Shoib Khan, Malik Ali, Muhammad Bilal, Ali Muhammad and Tanveer, along with four unidentified suspects.

Targeted Crimes Against Transgenders

The incident mentioned above is not an isolated case, unfortunately. Members of the transgender community in Pakistan have long been targets of discrimination and violence.

Despite some progress in recent years, discrimination against transgender individuals is still rampant in many parts of the country.

Transgender individuals face numerous challenges in Pakistan, including barriers to education, healthcare, and employment. Many are forced to turn to sex work as a means of survival, putting them at even greater risk of violence and disease.

In 2018, Pakistan’s parliament passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, which was designed to protect the rights of transgender individuals and provide them with greater legal recognition.

However, the law has not been fully implemented, and transgender individuals continue to face discrimination and violence.

The incident described in the article highlights the urgent need for greater protection for transgender individuals in Pakistan. It is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to abuse and violence simply because of their gender identity.

We must work together to create a more inclusive and accepting society in which transgender individuals can live without fear of persecution.

This requires not only changes in laws and policies but also a shift in attitudes and perceptions. We must all do our part to support and uplift the transgender community and work towards a brighter future for all.

Drama Serial Sar-e-Rah Promotes Gender Fluidity, Maria B Lashes Out!

The drama serial Sar-e-Rah has caught much attention lately because of its fantastic story and format to highlight societal issues.

One of the most recent topics that the drama has brought to attention is the acceptance of trans individuals in society. In the latest episode, Muneeb Butt who plays a trans sits in Saba Qamar’s taxi while crying.

He tells her that his father has been admitted to the hospital and it’s an emergency. After they reach, Qamar and Butt start to have an emotional exchange in which he tells her that his stepmother and step-brother have not accepted him.

Moreover, we see that throughout the episode, the stepmother tries to humiliate him by making him dance and wear lipstick.

However, his father is very supportive of him and has always been there and tries to explain the concept of gender fluidity to his son when he is younger. The conversation between the father (Nabeel Zafar) and his son Sarang (Muneeb Butt), has won hearts for its sensitive approach towards representing transgenders and intersex people onscreen.

While many viewers supported and appreciated this while some pointed out that this goes against their religious beliefs. One such individual who lashed out at the drama serial Sar-e-Rah is designer Maria B.

Social Media Reactions to Sar-e-Rah Gender Fluidty Scene

“I wasn’t expecting this but what an incredible message by Nabeel Zafar! He beautifully talked about gender differences to his son, something which should’ve been taught way before but we couldn’t because of extremist elements in the society,” wrote a user.

The relationship between Sarang and his father is beautiful in Sar-e-Rah this week. This father is honest with his son, and loves and supports him – what every child needs– but particularly those struggling against society. Nabeel Zafar and Muneeb Butt are brilliant.” Writes Sophia Q.

Maria B Calls Out Sar-e-Rah

While everyone appreciated Sar-e-Rah for its empathic approach, designer Maria B had other thoughts. Taking to Instagram, she posted a screenshot of Nabeel and Muneeb and wrote:

“This is how you sell your soul… Well done, Pakistan. So, this kid is intersex? And instead of following sharia and getting corrective help to become male or female, his dad is telling him to be gender fluid, like transgenders. Now, will you wake up Pakistan? Is the agenda still not clear? Laanat on all the people who sold their souls and will contribute to the destruction of our kids.”

Some other individuals slightly agreed with Maria B about the concept of gender fluidity. On the other hand, a user pointed out that ‘The seemingly innocuous dialogues are very problematic considering the fact that gender cannot be self-determined, even for an intersex person. These dialogues are confusing and exploiting intersex (khansa) children, rather than supporting them.’ Wrote one user.

Private Airline Allegedly Refuses to Fly Trans Passenger Over Gender

Unfortunately, transgender individuals in Pakistan, as well as in many other countries, continue to face significant challenges and discrimination.

One of the most recent examples of this was when a private airline allegedly refused to fly a trans passenger because they identify as the ‘x’ gender.

In the video, the individual is heard saying that they had to catch a flight for an annual meeting however the tickets/flight were cancelled because they are transgenders.

In recent years, there have been some efforts to address these issues and improve the rights and protections for transgender people in Pakistan, but much work remains to be done to ensure that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

In 2012, the government began issuing national identity cards with a “third gender” category, allowing transgender people to officially identify as such for the first time. In 2018, a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court recognized transgender people as a “third gender” and granted them a number of rights, including the right to vote, the right to inherit property, and the right to access education and employment opportunities.

In addition, the government has established a number of programs and initiatives to support transgender people and address the issues they face. These include the launch of a national helpline for transgender people, the establishment of skill development centres to provide vocational training, and the creation of a national task force on the rights of transgender people.

However, despite these efforts, transgender people in Pakistan continue to face significant discrimination and violence. They are often socially marginalized and have limited access to education and employment opportunities. Many transgender people are forced to turn to sex work or beg on the streets for survival. They also face harassment and abuse from police and the general public, and the legal system is often unresponsive to their needs.

Eliminating transphobia in society is important for several reasons. Firstly, it is a fundamental human right for all individuals to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their gender identity. Transgender people, like all individuals, deserve to live without fear of discrimination, harassment, or violence.

Secondly, transphobia and discrimination against transgender people can have serious negative impacts on their mental and physical health. Studies have shown that transgender individuals who face discrimination and marginalization are at a higher risk for depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Thirdly, transphobia and discrimination can also limit the social and economic opportunities available to transgender people. This can lead to poverty, unemployment, and poor education outcomes.

Lastly, eliminating transphobia and discrimination can also benefit society as a whole. When all individuals are able to fully participate in society, regardless of their gender identity, we can create a more equitable and just society for all.

In conclusion, eliminating transphobia is important for ensuring the rights, well-being, and full participation of transgender people in society. It also benefits the wider society by fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all.
