The Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Wollongong (UOW), Professor Patricia M. Davidson, formally introduced the Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship for students hailing from Pakistan on 25th October.

The scholarship unveiling ceremony was graced by the presence of the High Commissioner for Pakistan, His Excellency Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, UOW Global Brand Ambassador and cricket legend Adam Gilchrist AM, students, and members of the UOW community.

Mr. Chaudhri expressed his gratitude, saying,

I would like to convey our deepest appreciation to Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson for launching the Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarships for Pakistan. These scholarships will provide a tremendous opportunity for outstanding emerging leaders from Pakistan to study at one of Australia’s top universities and access world-class education.

 

The initiative will not only enable our future leaders to develop academically and professionally but also experience diverse Australian culture and build lasting positive relationships with Australia. Pakistan and Australia enjoy excellent bilateral relations with strong education sector collaboration.

 

Over 22,000 Pakistani international students are currently enrolled in various Australian universities, of which around 1,000 are studying at the University of Wollongong. These students have consistently exhibited firm commitment to academic excellence and professional development.

 

I extend my best wishes for their continued success and realization of their dreams. I also would like to convey my very best wishes for this esteemed institution under the dynamic leadership of Professor Davidson.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship is designed to nurture a new generation of dedicated leaders, offering financial support, leadership training, professional development, academic mentorship, and global mobility opportunities to its recipients.

Professor Davidson underlined the significance of the scholarship, stating, “The scholarship will open opportunities for outstanding students from Pakistan determined to make a positive impact on the world. Elijah Hurley, a recipient of the 2023 VC Leadership Scholarship, is pursuing a double degree in Bachelor of Economics and Finance – Bachelor of Laws. He shared his personal experience, stating, “Personally, for me, this scholarship has not only allowed me to invest more time into my studies but broadened my horizons and set a clear goal for my purpose in life. As someone with a keen interest in Economics, I would love to develop the capacity to enable more people to have financial literacy on a large scale and contribute to developing social structures that liberate individuals from poverty, not being held back by structures that restrict their opportunities. Surely, we can all agree that everyone deserves this kind of freedom. In fact, it is an insight that has only come with this scholarship as I have enjoyed the freedom to study and focus on being the best student I can be. Through a UOW affiliate program, I have even had the opportunity to gain banking experience with one of the big four banks, developing a practical application of financial literacy, and assisting those who need a hand with understanding a concept or solving a problem. I am grateful for these opportunities that have enabled me to grow and understand that they build on the scholarship program. Many of our fellows will have had a similar experience, and this is visionary on the part of UOW.”

Korean Government Announces Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students

The 2024 Global Korea Scholarship is currently accepting applications for undergraduate degree programs. This scholarship, known as the GKS Korean Government Undergraduate Scholarship 2024, is fully funded by the Korean Government and does not require IELTS. It offers opportunities for approximately 262 scholars.

Pakistani students who have just graduated their A levels or Intermediate studies have the golden opportunity to study abroad and learn all about the Korean culture. The scholarships are currently open to undergraduate and associate degree students, Masters and PhD scholarship programs will begin in 2024.

  1. Embassy Track
  2. University Track

Applicants have the option to apply for both scholarships as per the criteria they meet. Under the embassy track, applicants should submit their applications through the Korean Embassy of their home country. The embassy track reserves 86 scholarship slots, while the university track has 176 slots, resulting in a total of 262 scholarships available.

Benefits of the Italian International Scholarship Program Offered by the Italian Government include:

Tuition Fee Coverage

Recipients of the international scholarships are not required to pay any tuition or enrolment fees as these expenses will be covered by the Italian Government. Furthermore, for courses focused on the Italian language and culture, tuition fees are waived for grantees, but they are responsible for covering the enrolment fee from their personal funds.

Health Insurance Coverage

The Italian international scholarship includes comprehensive health insurance coverage for the entire duration of the scholar’s stay in Italy until the completion of their study program. This coverage includes medical expenses resulting from accidents or any sudden medical conditions that arise during their time in Italy.

However, any pre-existing medical conditions of the scholarship recipient will not be covered by the health insurance provided through the Italian Government Scholarship Program.

Monthly Stipend

Scholarship holders will receive a monthly stipend of 900 Euros, which will be transferred to their bank account in Italy on a quarterly basis. The first instalment of the monthly stipend will be disbursed only after the confirmation of enrolment at the chosen university in Italy.

Upon satisfactory academic records, students will receive the final instalment of the monthly stipend. Depending on the duration of the course, the monthly stipend may be divided into three or six instalments.

Oxford Pakistan Programme Scholarships Announced for Pakistani Students

The Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) has recently announced the establishment of the Tareen Oxford Scholarship to support talented Pakistani students from South Punjab who are unable to afford graduate education at the University of Oxford.

This scholarship will provide financial assistance to students who have been offered admission to one of the eligible graduate courses offered at Kellogg College, University of Oxford.

The scholarship will be awarded on a means-tested basis, and preference will be given to students who have the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of South Punjab. It will cover tuition fees and living costs and will be part of the OPP’s graduate scholarship program.

Tareen Oxford Scholarship by the Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP)

At least three graduate scholarships are awarded every year to talented Pakistani and British Pakistani students through this program.

The Tareen Oxford Scholarship is made possible by the generous support of Ali Tareen, an alumnus of Kellogg College, Oxford. The scholarship is part of a five-year program, with funds being donated annually and disbursed on a rolling basis.

The scholarship will be advertised by the OPP, Kellogg College, and the central University, as well as by the University’s constituent departments. It will be made available to prospective graduate students from across the University.

South Punjab is one of the most underdeveloped regions in Pakistan, and most overseas scholarships are inaccessible to students from this region. The Tareen Oxford Scholarship is one of the first scholarship initiatives specifically targeted at students from South Punjab.

The scholarship will not only benefit the awardees but will also create a positive impact in raising aspirations of similar talented scholars in the communities from which Tareen scholars will be drawn.

The scholarship will also be a significant step towards creating a more diverse and inclusive academic community at Oxford. To encourage talented students from South Punjab to apply to Oxford University and benefit from the Tareen Oxford Scholarship.; the OPP, in partnership with Ali Tareen, will organize a bespoke access program for students from South Punjab.

This program will consist of two initiatives:

  • An access program for final-year students applying for graduate degrees, which will feature an Access Conference for final-year students from South Punjab who are in the process of applying for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees abroad. The top 20 attendees at the Access Conference will be offered one-on-one mentorship with an Oxford student or recent alumni, free of cost.
  • For F.Sc toppers & first-year public sector university toppers, 100 students will be selected from South Punjab who have either topped their F.Sc. boards or obtained the highest marks in their first year at university. These students will be provided mentorship on how to make the most of their next three to four years, guidance on career prospects, and one-on-one mentorship to help them aspire to be the best minds globally.

It is worth noting that only around 30 students from Pakistan receive graduate offers each year to study at Oxford, but do not have the funding to pursue the opportunity. Additionally, hundreds of other talented students do not apply to Oxford for the same reason.

Google Offers 15,000 Scholarships to Pakistani Youth

One of the world’s biggest tech giants Google has offered 15,000 annual scholarships for Pakistani students.

This announcement was made by Senator Dr. Afnanullah Khan, a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Technology in a conversation with a local newspaper.

he added that this opportunity for the youth of the country will revolutionize the IT sector in the coming years. He added that with modest planning, Pakistan’s IT exports can easily be increased to $10 billion in the next few years.

Moreover, the Senator shared that South Korea has allocated a loan of one billion dollars for Pakistan’s information technology sector at an interest rate of only 0.1% .

He further added that the American company wants to invest three and a half million dollars in Pakistan, similarly, the sale of 5G license will bring billions of dollars in foreign exchange as well as heavy investment. There are many areas in IT that Pakistan can focus on to become an IT powerhouse in the region very soon. Furthermore, investment in the IT sector pays off fairly quickly

He said that the export of IT manpower to a country like Japan is also an important project which is being worked on. Therefore, every effort will be made to increase the focus of the government on this sector as much as possible so that the obstacles coming in the way of foreign investment can be removed.

It is to be noted that Senator Dr Afnanullah Khan holds a PhD in Information Technology from Oxford University and has experience in completing IT projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Senator Dr Afnanullah Khan is the son of a former federal minister and a close aide of Nawaz Sharif’s late senator Mushahidullah Khan.
