Kiani, Baig Make History as First Pakistani Women to Conquer Nanga Parbat

Two of Pakistan’s top mountaineers Naila Kiani and Samina Baig have successfully conquered the mighty Nanga Parbat, becoming the first Pakistani women to do so. Nanga Parbat also known as the ‘Killer Mountain’ which is the world’s ninth-tallest mountain standing at 8,125 meters. Located in the western Himalayas, Nanga Parbat is known for its steep slopes, challenging climbing routes, and unpredictable weather conditions. The wonder women from Pakistan, Kiani and Baig have achieved a feat unlike any other and have raised the bar for women all across the country. Naila Kiani became the first woman ever to summited the Nanga Parbat.

The secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Karrar Haidri confirmed that the duo climbers, Naila and Samina reached the summit at 10:18 am and 11:08 am respectively.

The mountain’s remote location, challenging weather conditions, and treacherous terrain contribute to its high fatality rate however, this time’s expedition saw Naila and Samina accompanied by fellow Pakistani male climbers who also accomplished the same feat. The team of climbers included Rizwan Dad, Wajid Nagri, Waqar Ali, Eid Muhammad, Ahmed Baig, Saeed Karim, Shah Daulat and Liaqat Karim. It has been reported by the Alpine Club that the entire team took the challenge without relying on any supplemental oxygen.

Furthermore, an impressive group of 28 mountaineers from various parts of the world achieved their goal of summiting Nanga Parbat on the same day, making it the largest single-day ascent in the mountain’s history.

Naila Kiani scaled the majestic Nanga Parbat, standing tall at 8,125 metres. Kiani became the first Pakistani woman to climb the Killer Mountain – Nanga Parbat. Naila has ascended seven of the enormous 8,000-meter peaks on the planet, establishing herself as one of the most incredibly talented climbers in the world today. The mountaineer has summitted the Everest, the K2, Lhotse, Annapurna, G1, and the G2.

Naila was elated with her accomplishment and spoke about her experience and thanked her sponsors, the Bard Foundation for their support in making the expedition a success.

PM to Confer Sitara-i-Imtiaz on Naila Kiani

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the conferment of the third-highest honour and civilian award after she successfully summited Mount Everest in Nepal.

The PM Office has issued an official notification directing the Cabinet Secretary to complete all the formalities regarding the award.

Kudos to Kiani for an amazing achievement.

Women Mountaineers Honored at 3rd Pakistan Mountain Pride Awards

A whopping number of 16 professional mountaineers were awarded the 3rd Pakistan Mountain Pride Awards at the 12th Pakistan Mountain Festival.

The 12-day advocacy festival was organized in collaboration with NRSP, PPAF, Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), National Heritage and Culture Division, Fatima Jinnah University, Rawalpindi Women University, SZABIST Islamabad Campus, Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), Comsats University CS Adventure Club, and GBC Council to commemorate International Mountain Day.

During the event, female Pakistani mountaineers who have achieved many milestones and shown the world that women are no less then men when it comes to achieving their passion were celebrated.  A young vocalist from Rawalpindi Women University Laiba Khan sang ‘Paharon ki qasm challay aao.’ 

Sakina Bi Ibrahim from Shigar (Baltistan), Gul Begam from Ghizer, Nusrat Yousuf from Rawalakot, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) won the Shoaib Sultan Khan Mountain Community Development Awards.

Marium Majeed Dar of Forward Kahuta (AJK) and Rashida Khanam from Chitral were given the Agostino Da Polenza Mountain Conservation Award. Whereas Sameena Baig and Naila Kiani got Nazir Sabir Mountaineering Award.

On the other hand, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund launched ‘PPAF SMEs Award’ under the banner of Pakistan Mountain Awards. This year’s award winners included Nazia Hussain (Chitral), Nasreen Moosa (Skardu), Karim Salman (Hunza), and Samiullah (Swat).

To commemorate the achievement of the mountaineers and the spirit of the mountains, Pakistan Mountain Festival and Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards, Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed shared:

Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards (PAMPA) were launched in 2019 to recognize the services par excellence of the individuals who have rendered their services to mountain conservation and uplift the communities over the decades, mountaineering, sustainable mountain tourism and for the promotion of mountain music. Before PAMPA, there was no system of recognition and encouragement for the marvelous people of the mountains. The PAMPA was launched to fill the void, initially with five categories. PPAF has added four SMEs awards from this year which makes a total of sixteen awards.

The event was graced with the presence of guests including guests of honour Country Head of Italian Cooperation Development in Pakistan Emanuela Benini, chairman of Rural Support Programmes Network Shoaib Sultan Khan, Pakistan’s renowned mountaineer Nazir Sabir, EvK2CNR Senior Scientific Advisor Ashiq Ahmed Khan, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) Group Head Institutional Development, Innovation, and Integration Irshad Khan Abbasi, Pakistan’s globally celebrated mountaineer Sarbaz Khan, and Director General PNCA Ayub Jamali.

We’d like to give a round of applause to these wonderful women and thank them for being icons and inspirations of thousands of girls across Pakistan who also want to make their homeland proud by following their footsteps.

Naila Kiani Becomes the First Pakistani Woman to Scale 3 Peaks Over 8000 Meters

The second Pakistani to successfully summit the K2 mountain has once again achieved a new record! Naila Kiani has become the first Pakistani woman to successfully summit 3 peaks scaling over 8,000 meters.

Reportedly, Kiani reached the top of Gasherbrum-1 – the 11th highest mountain in the world – at 7:45 am today, despite extreme weather conditions between the C2 and C3 points.

The Dubai-based banker summited K2, the second highest peak in the world, in July, and the 13th highest mountain, Gasherbrum-II, in 2021.
Last month, the country celebrated Samina Baig for her massive achievement of ascending K2. The 31-year-old had reached the top of the 8,611-metre (28,251-foot) peak as part of a seven-member local team and was followed hours later by Naila Kiani.

Moreover, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised the two women for their accomplishments and tweeted from his official Twitter account calling them ‘symbols of courage and bravery.

Samina Baig Becomes the First Pakistani Woman to Summit K2

She has done it once again, Pakistan’s Samina Baig becomes the first woman from the country to successfully summit K2.

Baig and her strong Pakistani team of seven successfully summited the savage peak of K2 at 7:42 am today (Friday). It is known to be the world’s most dangerous and difficult summit.

The team consisted of mountaineers Samina Baig, Eid Muhammad, Bulbul Kari, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, and Akber Hussain Sadpara.

Following Samina’s successful summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated her on this massive achievement.

Naila Kiani Becomes the First Female Pakistani Mountaineer to Climb the World’s Thirteenth Highest Mountain, Gasherbrum-II

A month ago, a Pakistani woman based in Dubai, Naila Kiani, became the first female Pakistani mountaineer to climb the world’s thirteenth highest mountain, Gasherbrum-II.

Gasherbrum-II stands at over 8,000 meters above sea level. Before launching her rock-climbing career, in 2018, Kiani got married at the base camp of K2, the world’s second tallest peak. Her enthusiasm and love for the mountains were apparent since then as she tied the knot on one of them.  After she posted pictures of her wedding online, the pictures went viral and made her a social media sensation.

Banker by Profession

She told an international publication that she “was planning more mountaineering expeditions in Pakistan and would also travel to Nepal to get more experience.” She told the publication, “I am a professional banker and have been living in Dubai for the last five years. I am also a boxer, so I was confident about my ability to climb G-II, though I was a little nervous at the beginning.”

Throughout the climb on July 18, Kiani was accompanied by Ali Raza Sadpara and Sirbaz Khan. She raised the Pakistan flag Gasherbrum-II. “Five more Pakistani women, including Samina Baig, were on their expeditions to different peaks above 8,000 meters in Pakistan this summer,” she said. “Allah chose me, and I scaled G-II.

Previous Mountaineering Experiences

Kiani has had previous mountaineering experiences. She has trekked to the K2 base camp. She has also visited Gondogoro La, a 5,585-meter-high mountain pass 25 kilometers south of K2 but never scaled any peak.  G-II was her “first summit.”

She said, “I was faced with different options while planning to climb my first mountain. HOWEVER, when I did my research, I realized that both 7,000- and 8,000-meter-high peaks required the same expedition time. So, I decided it would be the 8,000-meter Gasherbrum II Mountain. All my family members, especially my husband, cooperated with me.”

Kiani wishes to depict a positive image of Pakistan

Kiani wishes to project a soft image of Pakistan through her adventures. “Pakistan has an image problem which prevents foreign climbers and tourists from visiting our country. That makes it imperative for us to depict a positive image of our country. I am trying my best to address that issue in my own network of friends by carrying out different sports activities.”
