Utilizing their individual Instagram platforms for the good, both celebrities expressed their solidarity with the survivor, condemning the alleged incident and championing the cause for justice.

Ayesha conveyed her message to Nomaika and said,

“I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear about your ordeal. I’m so sorry you had to go through this horrific experience. Alhamdulilah, you’ve survived.”

Ayesha Omar is known to speak up for women and female celebrities when they are facing trouble. She was previously seen showing her support for Kiran Dar after news of her second marriage created waves all across social media.

Omar extended her sincere wishes for Nomaika’s recovery, offering prayers for resilience and emphasising that the survivor’s journey would undoubtedly serve as a beacon of inspiration for others grappling with similar situations. The celebrity assured Nomaika that she stands beside her, providing unwavering support and concluding with a message of love and strength.

Armeena Rana Khan also spoke up for Nomaika and talked about the consequences for men who are accused of domestic violence. She called out for such men to face stronger legal measures and wished that the society would be fair to women in such cases. Armeena penned down her thoughts on Instagram, saying,

“I honestly think such men should receive the same treatment. They only do this because there are no laws. It is done because often the woman is physically weak. If only they knew the punishment that awaits them in the hereafter for such savagery. My heart goes out to my fellow sisters who go through this. I wish the world was fairer.”

Ashfaque Satti Issues Statement Refuting DV Charges

Following the uproar on Social media after Nomaika shared evidence of her bruises and other reports, ARY anchor Ashfaq Satti has shared his personal statement on the matter over social media. He says he is innocent and under ‘mental agony’ after the reaction by the vast majority of people.

In his video he talks about his 17 year old career and addressed the dispute with his second wife Nomaika Tahir Mehmood over the case of domestic violence. He suggested people to listen to both sides of the story and expressed disappointment in his tarnished public image, discouraged a media trial, and placed faith in the justice system’s ongoing investigation.

Responding to rumors about his third wife, Zara Ansari, Satti clarified their three-year marriage, denying violence allegations. He criticized anchor Rabia Anam for not seeking his perspective before personal criticisms. Satti revealed receiving threatening calls, holding Anam responsible for any harm that may befall him, his wife, or his children.

 

In a recent development, Ashfaque Satti has sent a defamation notice to Anchorwoman Rabia Anum for defaming him without so called proof.

She set social media ablaze after breaking the news on her husband being extremely violent towards her and accusing him of domestic violence. She was beaten black and blue and has shared pictorial evidence backing it up.

My husband Ashfaque Satti who is a News Anchor & Program host on ARY News picked me up from my mother’s house. Later , he beat me like an animal while character assassinating …He grabbed me from my hair, dragged me across the floor & knocked my head repeatedly against the walls and door. He sat on my chest trying to choke me multiple times.He put the pillow on my face to stop me from breathing. He repeatedly said: “Tumhe Mar Kar Tumhari Laash Gaeb Kar Du Ga.” “Aaj Tu marray Gi Yaha Mere Hath Sy.” He beat me for hours and then locked me in my room.He took away my son ( 1.5 years old). He left me in the dark room badly injured without food and water while I continuously begged for help. I begged for mercy.
“Allah Ka Wasta Hai Ashfaq Mujhe Janay Den. Allah Ka wasta Hai Ashfaq Mujhe Chor Den.” I begged him & his mother several times. She was also there at home while all of it was happening to me.”

Alarming Statistics on Domestic Violence in Pakistan

The ADB’s report, titled “Gendered Impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Central and West Asia,” brings to light statistics derived from recent surveys conducted in Punjab and Sindh. The findings reveal a disturbing surge in threats of physical violence, increasing by 40%, and instances of physical assault perpetrated by spouses witnesses a whopping increase of 46%.

The study uncovered:

  • 14% of surveyed women were aware of community members threatened with physical harm by their husbands.
  • 19% mentioned cases of physical assault by husbands.
  • 27% reported instances of parental violence against children.

Climate Crisis Linked to Rising Domestic Violence in 3 South Asian Countries: Study

A recent study published by JAMA Psychiatry has discovered a strong connection between rising temperatures and a significant increase in domestic violence against women in three South Asian countries. As deadly heatwaves, landslides and urban flooding sweep through various cities worldwide including Pakistan, the ongoing climate crisis is not just deterring weather but also affecting the level of violence in the countries most affected by climate change.

According to the study a minor 1-degree Celsius increase in average annual temperature corresponds to a staggering rise of over 6.3% in incidents of physical and sexual domestic violence across three nations in South Asia which include India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Research Methodology and Findings

The study monitored the experiences of emotional, physical, and sexual violence reported by 194,871 girls and women aged 15-49 in India, Pakistan, and Nepal between 2010 and 2018. Simultaneously, it examined the temperature fluctuations that occurred during the same period. Amongst the three countries studied, India already had the highest reported rates of intimate partner violence, and it experienced the most pronounced escalation in abuse. A mere 1-degree Celsius increase in heat resulted in an 8% surge in physical violence and a 7.3% increase in sexual violence and a 4.9% rise in domestic violence.

Projected IPV Increase in South Asia: Pakistan Shows Lowest Increase at 5.9%

According to the study, if carbon emissions continue unabated, it is projected that by the 2090s, India will witness the most substantial increase in the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) at 23.5 percent. Nepal is expected to follow with a rise of 14.8 percent, while Pakistan is anticipated to experience a 5.9 percent increase.

Factors Contributing to Domestic Violence in a Warming Climate

The increase in global warming and hotter climate brings forth several factors that contribute to domestic violence. The growing intensity and frequency of heatwaves in countries like Pakistan can directly activate brain regions associated with regulating body temperature and emotions, potentially leading to increased aggression.

Moreover studies have shown that exposure to acute heat has been linked to heightened production of adrenaline, which can result in heightened physiological arousal. Additionally, heat-related events can have harmful effects on mental health, which in-turn increases the risk of intimate partner violence.

Furthermore, the economic strain resulting from reduced agricultural productivity and decreased labor efficiency, coupled with the deteriorating living conditions caused by extreme weather events, can further worsen the issue of intimate partner violence in the South Asian Countries.

Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2020 Bill Introduced in National Assembly

Bill for Domestic Violence (Protection and Prevention) Act 2020 was introduced by Human Rights Minister, Shirin Mazari, in the National Assembly on Wednesday. The bill aims to protect the rights of all victims of domestic violence and abuse at home, including children, women, elderly and other vulnerable beings such as maids etc who live in one household, reports The Nation.

The Bill introduced was referred for further deliberations to the Standing Committee. The bill aims to keep in check the inhumane acts of violence occurring in closed vicinity, turning them into an unsafe environment. These acts include any kind of physical and emotional abuse, for instance threats, verbal abuses, slapping, punching etc. This also includes any kind of financial or economic abuse.

The issue of domestic violence at provincial level is been taken care of by the provincial governments of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, that have already enacted the legislation to probe into the matter. Therefore, the ministry of human rights has drafted a Bill to provide protection against domestic violence at the federal level.

The legal proposal’s aim is to build an efficient system against domestic violence in the territorial jurisdiction of Islamabad Capital Territory and provide protection, rehabilitation and relief to children, women and elders and any kind of vulnerable person suffering. It will most importantly be providing relief to domestic violence victims who are related to the abusers by kinship, consanguinity, marriage etc.

Purpose of the Bill Introduced

The Bill was introduced a few days after the incident where a journalist in Punjab physically abused his wife who was a spokesperson for this issue, causing her to die tragically. #JusticeforZahra was trending on Twitter for a long while, where people demanded justice for the victim.

The Bill also aims to empower courts to give custody protection, residence orders and interim orders, along with monetary relief to violence victims. It envisions creating a Protection Committee to provide ease to the harmed person and process their application in court.

Numerous consultations were arranged by the human rights ministry, with stakeholders and a NOC was also obtained from interior Ministry, which is the relevant ministry to deal with this issue.

 

Consultations, for Bill finalization, were held with Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Minister for Science and Technology, State Minister for Interior/Special Assistant to PM (SAPM) and Faroogh Naseem, Minister for Law and Justice and Barrister Mirza Shahzad Akbar.
