Pakistani Women to Get Free Cancer Treatment

Minister of State for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Faisal Karim Kundi, revealed plans for a partnership between the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan (SLIC) to deliver cost-free cancer treatment services to women beneficiaries across the nation.

Faisal Karim Kundi stated that a comprehensive proposal is currently under development, with an impending agreement with SLIC, aimed at enabling the BISP to provide essential free treatment facilities for cancer to disadvantaged women across the country.

Kundi highlighted the streamlining of the BISP system, making it user-friendly and increasing transparency in disbursements through a novel banking mechanism.

He emphasized the Pakistan Peoples Party’s dedication to pragmatic steps that alleviate the masses’ hardships, and the introduction of such welfare-driven initiatives is a testament to this commitment.

Minister Kundi also commended the launch of the State Life First Takaful Zone in DIKhan, recognizing its potential to foster economic growth and generate employment opportunities in the region.

SLIC Chairman Shoaib Javed Hussain underscored that the event aligns with Faisal Karim Kundi’s vision to provide both financial security and healthcare assistance to the people of Dera Ismail Khan. He highlighted that the establishment of the corporation in 1972, under the vision of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, has consistently expanded its scope.

Integrated Solutions for Early Detection, Screening & Treatment of Breast, Ovarian, & Cervical Cancer

Women face an alarmingly high gap in healthcare access in Pakistan coupled with the fact that we have the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia*, with a mortality rate above 50%**.

In 2022 alone, more than 25,000** women were diagnosed with breast cancer and worryingly, one out of eight Pakistani women is at risk of developing breast cancer.

Additionally, more than 5000** Pakistani women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year with 3197** reported deaths. While cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer in women, ovarian cancer also saw the reporting of 4326** cases in 2022.

This high prevalence stems from a plethora of reasons: lack of awareness, fear around stigmatization and positive diagnoses, affordability, inadequate infrastructure, and distance to screening sites. While unfortunately, women face barriers at every stage of their disease journey, early diagnosis makes these cancers preventable and treatable.

Here at Roche Pakistan, we are committed to women’s health at every stage of their lives. We aspire to provide innovative healthcare and play a transformative role in all stages of women’s cancers; from initial diagnostics right through support during treatment. Hormonal Contraceptives Increase Breast Cancer Risks: Study

A recent study suggests that the use of progestogen-only (hormonal) contraceptives could slightly increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Researchers examined the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women who were current or recent users of progestogen-only contraceptives. The study used data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), which contains medical records for more than 11 million individuals in the UK.

The study used a nested case-control design to investigate the association between hormonal contraceptives and invasive breast cancer. The participants included women aged 20 to 49 years who had been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between January 1, 1996, and September 20, 2017. The researchers used CPRD Read codes to define invasive breast cancer.

Each case was matched with two controls based on the index date, year of birth, general practice, and observation period. Cases and controls were required to have a minimum of 12 months of follow-up before the index date.

Women who had one or more prescriptions for a hormonal contraceptive during the observation period were considered as having a prescription, while those without a prescription were defined as non-users. Women with a prescription less than 12 months before the index date were classified as current users of oral contraceptives.

Prescription classifications included oral combined contraceptive, oral progestogen-only contraceptive, injectable progestogen, progestogen implant, and progestogen-releasing intrauterine device (IUD).

The study analyzed 9,498 cases of breast cancer with 18,171 matched controls. Two percent of cases and controls were aged under 30 years, 21% aged 30 to 39 years, and 77% aged 40 to 49 years.

The study found that women with at least one hormonal contraceptive prescription were at a greater risk of developing breast cancer. The average time between the last hormonal prescription and breast cancer development was 3.1 years.

The odds ratios (ORs) for breast cancer were 1.23 for oral combined, 1.26 for oral progestogen-only, 1.25 for injectable progestogen, 1.22 for progestogen implant, and 1.32 for progestogen IUD. These ORs indicated significantly raised risks for each of these hormonal contraceptive prescriptions.

Side Effects of Hormonal Contraceptives

Hormonal contraceptives are a popular form of birth control that includes pills, patches, injections, and intrauterine devices (IUDs) that release hormones. While these methods are effective in preventing pregnancy, they can have some side effects. Here are some of the most common side effects associated with hormonal contraceptives:

  1. Nausea: Hormonal contraceptives can cause mild to severe nausea, especially when a woman first starts using them.
  2. Headaches: contraceptives can cause headaches in some women.
  3. Mood changes: contraceptives can cause mood swings, including depression, anxiety, and irritability.
  4. Weight gain: Some women may experience weight gain when using hormonal contraceptives.
  5. Irregular periods: Hormonal contraceptives can cause changes in a woman’s menstrual cycle, including lighter or heavier periods, spotting, and irregular bleeding.
  6. Decreased libido: Some women may experience a decrease in sex drive when using contraceptives.
  7. Blood clots: contraceptives can increase the risk of blood clots, which can be life-threatening.
  8. Breast tenderness: Some women may experience breast tenderness or enlargement when using contraceptives.
  9. Acne: Hormonal contraceptives can cause acne in some women.
  10. Yeast infections: Hormonal contraceptives can increase the risk of yeast infections.

It’s important to note that not all women will experience these side effects, and some women may experience no side effects at all. Babar Sheikh took to social media to pen down a heartfelt note about his wife Zahra Khan who was diagnosed with cancer. Khan, who is a marketeer by profession and an entrepreneur was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Sheikh also writes that despite receiving this heart-wrenching news, Zahra Khan did not give up. She continued with her job and managed to cater to her new and budding business, No Nonsense Cheesecake.

A Peek into Zahra Khan’s Journey

He writes:

On 6th Jan 2022, we found a lump on my wife’s chest. After 2 weeks of countless hours of waiting in hospital lobbies, meeting numerous oncologists and breast surgeons and a million scans later, our world turned upside down. Zahra had stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, a highly malignant breast cancer which was fast growing.

More than a sense of dread, there was anxiety and confusion before we internalised the fact that the battle was yet to come. But this was also when we made a decision-one where we would not let cancer run the narrative.

This post is more than just about cancer. Zahra had a full-time job, and a budding business and I was transitioning into a new job. In the midst of this, we were caught in the eye of the storm. The treatment regimen would lead to severe changes mental and physical for both of us. From vacating our home, and moving in with my in-laws (owing to the extra care she would need during her fight with the disease) to proactively getting our scans and appointments done. Diet, sleep and self-nourishment became important like never before.

A nerve-wracking 6 months of chemotherapy saw her lose her hair, not function for days after a chemo session, lose her taste of food or water for days on end and was general fatigue and lethargic.

The lesson here, though, is this; she didn’t allow her reality to change her life. She kept her job (despite first taking a sabbatical), and she kept adding value to brands the way she’s always done day in and day out. She grew her cheesecake business manifold. Her social media presence increased 4X, sales went through the roof and she made a brand that has become a “household name” in many quarters – all from the confines of her bed. A lesson in fighting with grace, if there was ever one.

We’d like to mention that during this difficult time, Zahra’s company and bosses understood her pain and gave her the space and flexibility she needed. The office created an environment where she didn’t feel pressurized to work. What kept her going was kind words and appreciation of all she was doing by her colleagues.

Babar’s manager also gave him relief for his wife, hospital runs, and attending the sessions no matter how long they were.  It took 16 chemo sessions, a double mastectomy, and 19 radiations for Zahra Khan to defeat cancer like a champ she took the fight and won.

“Compassion and kindness, at home and at work, go a long way. Everyone is fighting their battles, let’s create systems that can make it just a tad bit easier for them,” he concluded his note.

During a podcast, Zahra Khan shared that being in the marketing field and because October is promoting campaigns, she had self-examination on top of her mind.

So one day, while changing she conducted a self-examination and felt a lump. She adds that it was not sticking out and wasn’t noticeable, but was there.

She even shared that there were no symptoms, and she was very normal during the discovery, she was not lethargic nor experienced any other differences.

As cases of breast cancer are spiking all around the world, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, companies are trying their best to launch awareness campaigns that will benefit the people of their countries.

Iraq, just like many other Muslim countries takes a subtle approach to such sensitive topics as ‘breast’ is often considered a taboo word along with other terminologies.

To tackle this issue while ensuring a subtle approach, Miswag has launched a campaign titled  ‘The Letter Noon Of Feminine’. The ideology behind this campaign is to the point.

When the letter ‘Noon‘ ن comes at the end of words it refers to the plural form of verbs indicating a reference to females. The shape of the letter is so unique, and with a special kind of calligraphy, the negative space of it will be shaped as a female breast.

Hence, instead of using a breast or a female model, they used the letter ‘Noon‘ to show how a woman can conduct a self-examination on herself for the early detection of cancer.

The campaign was published on social media, also as printed materials that were distributed with all orders done by females to help demonstrate the steps of Breast Cancer inspection.

Breast cancer is spreading at an alarming rate, which has made researchers and scientists question if the spread of the said disease is related to climate change and/or geographical factors.

One of the potential reasons for breast cancer is an unhealthy lifestyle, at times these lifestyles are highly influenced by our surroundings and environment, which then makes us question if there is any relationship between cancer and environmental factors.

In a recent study that took place in Iran, researchers shared that human exposure to ultraviolet rays during childhood and adolescence can be linked to the occurrence of breast cancer. Moreover, the recent climate change impact and the spread of diseases shows that cancer is one of the diseases which has been affected by climate change.

The study further points out that breast cancer is formed by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The over-exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays plays a major role in the risk of obtaining it. Furthermore, in industrialised societies, where there is a massive change in the environment due to solar radiations and pollutants, the risk of endocrine disorders has seen an increase over time, evidently, that leads to higher chances of cancer.

Pakistan, just like Iran, is at high risk of breast cancer cases. According to a report, cases of breast cancer have seen a massive increase, particularly in Pakistan. There has been a surge in cases of women between the ages of 50 – 64 years as well as younger women aged 30 – 34, and this trend is likely expected to increase by 130.7% by 2025.

Early diagnosis of cancer can increase the chances of 5-year survival by up to 99%. Women 40 years and above should get mammography conducted once a year, while younger women can get screened or turn to self-examination if finances are a concern.

According to Maryanaji’s study, the rate of cancer is highly increased along with the increasing longitude due to the location of the countries, in this case, Iran. Because the country experiences hot weather and receives more radiation energy from the sun, their men and women are at high risk.

Rich N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Diet May Help Prevent Breast Cancer: Report

Researchers collaborating with The North American Menopause Society have found that diets high in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may help decrease the risk of breast cancer.

Moreover, it was determined that fish, vegetable oil, nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds, flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables are excellent sources of n-3 PUFAs.

NAMS PresidentDr Chrisandra Shufelt said:

This study highlights the effect of lifestyle habits and, specifically, dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids on breast cancer risk. Lifestyle (or diet) is known to contribute to up to one-third of the risk for breast cancer. Women can affect their risk of developing breast cancer by making dietary changes to include fruits and vegetables, fibre, and whole grains and avoiding high-fat animal and dairy products.

As per the published study, a hospital-based case-control study including 1,589 cases and 1,621 age-frequency-matched controls was conducted. Dietary data were assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals were obtained using multiple unconditional logistic regression models after controlling for potential confounders.

The study concluded that a higher intake of fatty acids was linked with a lower risk of breast cancer. Further, overweight or obese women who increased their fatty acid intake also saw a lower breast cancer risk.

‘A decreased risk of breast cancer was significantly associated with increasing n-3 PUFA intake in obese/overweight women, but not in women of normal weight. There was a significant interaction between linoleic acid and marine n-3 PUFAs.’

According to statistics from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 264,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and approximately 42,000 women die from the disease yearly.

The Chinese team also examined whether the association was modified by menopause status, hormone-receptor status, or linoleic acid intake.
