The Sindh High Court has rejected a petition pleading to ban the annual ‘Aurat March’ rally. The purpose of the rally is to raise awareness about women’s rights in an attempt to promote equality and embrace equity.
While the march takes place on International Women’s Day every year, this time around it will be held on 12th March, while a conference will take place tomorrow, 8th March.
Bisma Noreen alias Ameer Jahan, filed the petition in court, stating that the Aurat March should be banned as slogans raised by the rally participants “are against the values of Pakistani society”.
However, after hearing arguments the initial arguments, the court observed that there was nothing objectionable in the slogans highlighted by the petitioner. Moreover, the court added that the Constitution of Pakistan grants freedom of movement to all citizens.
Furthermore, the court directed Bisma Noreen to pay Rs. 25,000 as a fine, and instructed NADRA to block the petitioner’s national identity card in case of non-payment of the amount.
The court added that the attempt to ban ‘Aurat March’ was just an attempt to gain publicity as no substantial argument was presented by the petitioner. Moreover, the court said the petitioner was not an aggrieved party in the case.
