In the city of Las Vegas, an officer from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is breaking barriers set for Pakistani women one day at a time! Farhat Mir, a 49-year-old officer, holds the distinction of being the department’s first female Pakistani officer of the Muslim faith.
Farhat Mir hails from Pakistan and relocated to the United States after the tragic events of 9/11 arriving in the US after two years of the terror strike.
Farhat Mir is working diligently and using her personal background and unique perspective to tackle terrorism in Las Vegas. She uses strong communication skills and makes connections with people of all faiths in the city. She mentions that she regularly visits the synagogue as part of her regular routine to make connections with the religious community.
She mentions, “I make it a point to reach out to everyone, regardless of whether it’s a synagogue, mosque, temple, Buddhist temple, Sikh temple, or church,” Mir expresses. “If it’s a faith-based institution, I knock on their door persistently until they open up and establish a relationship with me.”

She further adds, Unfortunately, in the present day, faith-based organizations are susceptible targets due to their open-door policy.” Mir has her duty in the LVMPD’s Fusion Center where she assists the department in identifying and preventing of potential attacks on communities including those that are vulnerable targets.
Fusion Centers were established in the United States after the events of September 11, 2001, to facilitate the sharing of information among federal, state, and local intelligence systems.
Sgt. Bryce Martines, the Fusion Management Team Supervisor talks highly of Officer Mir and states, “One of the remarkable aspects of Officer Mir is her diverse life experiences, which we may not relate to here in the United States. Things that we often take for granted.”
Farhat Mir also realises and acknowledges that her working as a police officer is an unconventional choice as a Pakistani woman but she is proud of her choices and is determined to continue surprising people. Apart from being a police officer, she is also participating in the upcoming Mrs Nevada pageant, which will crown a queen on June 18 in Las Vegas.
Mir is determined to break stereotypes and wants to broader horizons for women from backgrounds similar to hers. “I aim to break down barriers that divide people and their thinking, I want to broaden horizons for women from backgrounds like mine—Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Muslim women. It’s not typical for Muslim women to participate in pageants. They hesitate and refrain from taking part.”

While this may have impressed you, Farhat Mir is full of surprises and believes in taking action, she graduated from the rigorous police academy at the age of 42 and believes in conquering dreams and is deeply invested in people’s well-being and the safety of the entire community.
