Commonwealth is a scholarship offered by the United Kingdom to special individuals who have the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage.
Each year, 800 students are given a chance to earn this scholarship and undertake postgraduate degrees at UK universities.
By funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats, the scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders.
Who Can Apply?
In order to apply, you must be a citizen or have permanent residency in a Commonwealth country. If you are a refugee or British-protected person, you are still eligible.
Moreover, applicants must have an undergraduate honuors degree of at least upper second class. Those who wish to get their Ph.D. are required to have a Master’s Degree.
Lastly, you must be unable to afford to study in the United Kingdom without a scholarship.
Types of Commonwealth Scholarship Awards
There are different types of rewards offered under the Commonwealth Scholarship, including:
• Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships
• Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships
• Commonwealth Medical Fellowships
• Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships (for high-income countries)
• Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships (for least developed countries and fragile states)
• Commonwealth Professional Fellowships
• Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
• Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships (for low and middle-income countries)
Most of the scholarships are fully funded which means all costs including tuition fees, airfare, and living allowances are covered.
How to Apply?
Depending on which scholarship you are applying for, you may need to apply through a National Nominating Agency, a university, or a Non-Governmental Organization.

Annual deadlines for applications are usually in December. However, visit the official website for more information.
To date, over 27,800 people have taken up Commonwealth Scholarships since the first group of 175 Scholars arrived in the UK in 1960 – including world-renowned Prime Ministers, Nobel Peace Prize Winners, politicians/diplomats, world leaders, writers, academics, business owners, NGO runners, and many more.
