Fatima Khan, an engineering student from Lahore recently undertook a project that aimed to transform the traditional rickshaw into a comfortable and convenient mode of transportation.
The Rickshaw Revolution
The product design department was given a project by a company that wanted the students to use a rickshaw and its resources, but give it a different look so that it doesn’t look like the conventional 3-wheeler.
Khan added that in Pakistan, there is a stereotype that rickshaws are commonly used in the city, by those who are poverty-stuck and have a lack of status, causing many people to feel ashamed to travel in one.
Fatima recognized this issue and sought to change it by giving their rickshaw a techy look and by hiding the front wheel to give it a more 2-wheeler outlook.
Moreover, Khan shared that it took Rs. 2 lakhs for her to change the vehicle’s look overall. Khan added that it took a few designs and tough situations but they got through to create the final product with the help of their teachers.

Rickshaws & Their Electric Future
Fatima Khan added that they plan to make the rickshaw completely electric in the near future. Pakistan is a rapidly developing country, and as its cities grow, so does the need for reliable and efficient modes of transportation.
In recent years, electric rickshaws have emerged as a promising solution to the country’s transportation problems. In this article, we will explore why electric rickshaws are the future of transport in Pakistan.
First and foremost, electric rickshaws offer a clean and sustainable solution to the transportation needs of the country. With the growing concerns of climate change and the increasing pollution levels in Pakistani cities, the adoption of electric rickshaws is a step towards reducing carbon emissions and preserving the environment. Unlike traditional gasoline-powered rickshaws, electric rickshaws emit zero pollutants, making them a more environmentally-friendly option.
Another advantage of electric rickshaws is their low operating costs. The cost of electricity is significantly lower than the cost of gasoline, making electric rickshaws a more economical option for both the operators and the passengers. Additionally, the maintenance costs of electric rickshaws are also lower as they have fewer moving parts and require less frequent servicing.

Furthermore, electric rickshaws offer a convenient and comfortable mode of transportation for passengers. With their quiet and smooth operation, electric rickshaws provide a more pleasant experience for passengers compared to traditional rickshaws. Moreover, the availability of air conditioning and other features in some models of electric rickshaws further enhance the comfort of the ride.
Another benefit of electric rickshaws is that they are more accessible to the average person. With their affordability and ease of use, electric rickshaws are a practical solution for many people in Pakistan who cannot afford to own or operate a car. In addition, electric rickshaws can navigate through traffic more easily and efficiently than cars, making them a faster and more convenient option for short trips.
Finally, electric rickshaws can provide new job opportunities in the country. The shift from traditional rickshaws to electric rickshaws creates a demand for trained operators and maintenance technicians, providing employment opportunities for the local population.
