Actress Yasra Rizvi has been part of the film industry for a while but it was her role in Asim Abbasi’s Churail that got her critical recognition. The series took Pakistan by storm as it heavily represented women power and feminism. She was caught candidly speaking about the matter and was pretty vocal of the unjust that takes place in this society with women.
However, her latest role, for Fahad Mustafa’s Dunk has gotten her into hot waters. It is presumed by fans that her character Saira might cause serious negative repercussions for harassment victims because she is a character in a story about false allegations.
Here is what her fans had to say:
In todayβs news @YasraRizvi thought it appropriate to be a part of a show on βfalse allegationsβ (knowing Pakistanβs victim blaming dynamics). From Churails to this, big sell out.

I personally donβt care what any of these darling showbiz liberals are up to, but kindly stop doing saadi si feminist marketing out of yourself if you donβt have any idea what feminist praxis is, and the importance of engaging when you publicly claim to hold certain ideals.

For those of you who are unaware of what Dunk is all about, a Twitter user has explained the storyline briefly
#Dunk is about a professor named Humayun (Nauman Ijaz) who is named as a sexual harasser. His accuser Amal (Sana Javed) & her fiancΓ© Haider (Bilal Abbas) threaten to boycott the university. Yasra Rizvi plays Humayunβs wife & Shahood Alvi plays Haiderβs father.#PakistaniDramas pic.twitter.com/rsy01NFemj

After her fans critiqued her choice of work, Yasra took it to her Instagram and spoke about the matter at length. She said, “Many saw Jugnu as a drunkard druggie who was selling be-hayai in the name of women empowerment, and many think Saira will cause serious negative repercussions for harassment victims because she is a character in a story about false allegations.”

She added, “No one really knows who I am and what I do every day, how I work, what I truly believe in, many haven’t watched Churails or will not watch all the 20 something episodes of Dunk, many don’t know anything about my body of work and its detail to really understand what is it that I even stand for, BUT everyone gets to talk because I am out there doing my thing so talk away! Cheers to that!”
Some weren’t pleased with her response to the criticism she received.
She then said she believes in all stories that happen. Everyone has the right to feel what you feel about those stories.
Others pointed out that the drama has the potential to trigger victims and make silence more entrenched
Some also were ready to teach Yasra difference between good and bad projects
