American lingerie, clothing, and beauty retailer Victoria’s Secret have hired its first down syndrome model Sofia Jirau from Puerto Rico.
This was a long time coming. The Down syndrome community is finally getting on its feet and earning the recognition they deserve. Previously, Gucci hired an 18-year old model with Down syndrome, Ellie Goldstein, for its mascara campaign in 2020.
In 2022, a down syndrome model, Emily, walked down the runway of New York Fashion Week to represent her community in the fashion world. These occurrences inspire others and illustrate an image of a different narrative of what’s ‘Normal.’
In a clip featured on Victoria’s secret official Instagram page, Sofia wears a push-up plunge bra in purple. She says, “On the inside and on the outside, there are no limits. And the fear is not in my body; it’s outside”.
The post highlights Sofia’s accomplishments. The caption says, ” By age 25, Puerto Rican model, Sofia Jirau, has already conquered her ultimate dream: to model on the most important runways in the world. In 2019, Sofia launched the online store, Alavett, selling clothing, accessories, and home products.”
Sofia was asked what it meant to her to be featured in The Love Cloud Campaign? She replied, “It is a dream come true. I am happy to be able to show everyone that Sofia Jirau is going to shine around the world. I feel confident because fear is not in my vocabulary.” #WearTheCloud
An Instagram user commented, “This honestly is the most beautifully amazing thing the Victoria’s Secret has ever done! I am so glad to see so many diverse and beautiful women represent their countries, their cultures, and what it is to be a true woman. This is absolutely amazing”.
