A recent twist in the story has now become the talk of town, the ‘false rape’ scene between drama lead Saad (Wahaj Ali) and Faha (Areeb’s fiancé) has caused quite the uproar on social media. What was touted as a love triangle between Saad (Wahaj Ali), Maheer (Hania Amir) and Areeb (Nauman Ijaz) is slowly turning into a psycho thriller drama, Areeb being the psycho in this case. The scenario began with Faha calling Saad to her room, drugging his drink and then screaming her lungs out when the police arrived at the scene conveniently called by Areeb. The entire ploy was orchestrated by Areeb and Faha to ruin Saad’s reputation and put him behind bars.

The race for the highest ratings it seems has caused the show-makers to add this false rape accusation into the plot. With the #metoo movement already being set back across the world with false cases such as the Johny Depp v. Amber Heard, Pakistani dramas need not promote false rape accusations in dramas. Keeping in mind the number of actual rape cases that remain unsolved in the nation, to show false accusations made by women and broadcast it on national television is a definite no-no!

Influence of TV Dramas on the General Public

TV dramas have the power to shape public perceptions and influence attitudes in the country, unlike a film which is watched by those who choose to go to the cinema, dramas are accessible even in the rural areas. Pakistani show makers can choose to address social issues, challenge stereotypes, and promote inclusivity, thereby raising awareness and fostering positive changes in society. However, the opposite is being done, just recently, the sensational drama, Tere Bin showed an alleged marital rape in one of the episodes that led to a brouhaha on social media, with the world watching, Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha has similarly brought rape into the equation for an unpleasant turn in the story. The hero who has been the knight in shining armour since day one of the show is now the main suspect for an alleged rape.

Despite Pakistani television dramas experiencing high television ratings and garnering significant views on YouTube, there has been a noticeable decline in the quality of content over the past few years by Pakistani writers.

Nowadays, the majority of dramas heavily rely on repetitive love triangles and conflicts between sisters, often incorporating toxic elements in approximately 99% of the scripts.

Despite the repeated expression of concerns regarding this issue, little action has been taken to address it.

Ali Safina, a seasoned actor with a long-standing career in the industry, recently made an appearance on the talk show ‘Fuchsia’ where he shed light on the truth behind Pakistani drama writers.

During the interview, he disclosed that scripts are frequently created by content teams, which highlights the deteriorating state of writing in the industry and the reasons behind this troubling trend. Safina’s insights drew attention to the worrisome situation surrounding the quality of scripts in the Pakistani drama industry.

According to Ali Safina, a substantial number of Pakistani drama writers work collaboratively in teams and simply modify old stories by assigning different names to them. Furthermore, he revealed that dramas are often filmed with only 7-8 episodes written, leaving writers with inadequate time and resources to develop a coherent script.

Safina further divulged that writers are not appropriately compensated for their work, leading to the production of substandard scripts. However, he noted that some writers have managed to produce high-quality dramas for Green Entertainment due to the more generous remuneration they receive from the production company.

Poor-quality content has a significant impact on viewers. When audiences are exposed to bad content, it can lead to various negative consequences and experiences.

Firstly, bad content fails to engage and captivate viewers. Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha’s Writer Reveals Why Saad is a Non-Toxic Character

Pakistani drama serial Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha has gained massive popularity in very little time. Asides the storyline, one of the biggest reasons for this Saad (Wahaj Ali).

Saad is one of the main male leads in the show, he is the husband and cousin of Maheer (Hania Amir) the female lead.

While Saad has always loved Maheer and has cared for her since day 1, Maheer has feelings towards another man, and despite knowing how she feels, he has given his 100% to the relationship.

Unlike cliché leads, Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha’s Saad is a whole new league. So much so, Netizens have praised Wahaj’s character for being sensitive, down-to-earth, attentive, and for being devoted to his wife as he is to his parents.

In an interview, the female writer behind this iconic character and drama, Sidra Sahar Imran shared that she felt it was extremely important to address the toxic double standards that exist in our society, including shaming men for being sensitive or showing emotions and having a kind heart.

Moreover, she added that there is a need for men like Saad who are non-toxic in our society, and we couldn’t have agreed more. She said, “I had observed that often romance novels will depict the girl as a ‘sati savitri’ who will sacrifice all that she has, but I used to think that men also exist in our society why can’t we depict them the same way?”

She added that many people on social media were in fact shocked to see such a character on the TV screen. “I can see that most people are shocked that a man like Saad is acting this way. Because we are so used to men not being able to tolerate a lot of abuse.

“Our society cannot understand the fact that men should be sensitive and soft-spoken since we are used to the standards telling them to be tough and loud. In our male-dominant society, we encourage men to be real men they need to be aggressive and outspoken to prove their worth.

“But there are a lot of men like Saad out there and I wanted to write a character like him.”

Imran added that she could have shown and revealed her anger in Saad through the Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha script, but she refused.

“I didn’t want my character to act in this manner, after coming a long way. He will not cater to such toxic standards about what a real man is.” She concluded.

Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha is a love triangle between Maheer, Saad, and Areeb. Saad has always been in love with his cousin Maheer but when he fails to confess it to her, life takes a different turn; and Areeb enters the frame.

Areeb’s toxic mother forces him to leave Maheer at the wedding venue, hence Saad steps up and takes Maheer as his wife to save her respect. But, Areeb realizes his mistakes and tries to convince her to accept and forgive him.

Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha Drama Review: Cringe, Cringe & More Cringe

Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha is a new drama series on ARY Digital with a dream cast featuring Hania Aamir, Zaviyar Noman Ijaz, and Wahaj Ali.

However, let’s be honest: the first episode left us confused and we felt like the cringe would never end. So what happened? As usual, Maheer (Hania Aamir) and Saad (Wahaj Ali) grew up together (they’re cousins FYI), and Saad is head over heels for Maheer, and already considers her his ‘wifey’.’ In contrast, she clearly does not feel the same way about him.

In fact, Saad is everything from her driver to helper, but not someone who she considers a life partner. Cliche no? But wait, Maheer has another cousin from her mom’s side who is getting engaged. That cousin has a very good friend Areeb (Zaviyar Noman Ijaz) who has a fashionably-late entry problem.

Areeb lays eyes on Maheer and we can literally hear the violins in the back, whereas Maheer plays the hard-to-get girl in order to make an impression. Throughout the episode, we find out that Maheer’s father is very conservative and does not like the mother’s side of the family for being very liberal.

Moreover, we also see that Maheer’s father and Saad’s father share a respectful bond but Maheer’s mother leaves no stone unturned to show them their place, we assume that Maheer’s father is the successful businessman that is running the household and Saad and his family are trying to make ends meet.

Moving on, Maheer tries to be inclusive at the engagement, but her cousin Anabia’s (Sabeena Syed) friends tease her about roaming around Areeb the entire evening and not giving them any attention. Maheer feels offended, calls Saad and asks him to pick up her, while Areeb tries to take a stand for her.

So, the moral of the story here was that it is completely okay to stalk people at weddings, feel over-protective of them, and completely ignore personal boundaries because it’s just 2023 and these things don’t matter because we’re Pakistanis. The male ego, love triangle, and conversations seem very forced and quite cringe.

The first episode offered nothing new, but we do hope that there is a scope for improvement in the upcoming days. There are some moments that will make you smile, some that will melt your heart, but then there are many many moments that get you thinking about what is wrong with them.
