Pakistani Celebrities are Asking Netizens to Help Coke Studio Singer Abdul Wahab Bugti Who Lost His Home During Baluchistan Floods

Bringing the flavours of diversity this year, Coke Studio released a Balochi track titled ‘Kana Yaari’ featuring Kafi Khalil, Eva B, and folk singer Abdul Wahab Bugti.

Unfortunately, this monsoon season has brought ample destruction and chaos, particularly in the province of Balouchistan, where hundreds lost their lives and countless became homeless (National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), more than 36,469 households have been affected, of which 60% are in Baluchistan.), including Abdul Wahab Bugti.

Bugti lost his home in the flash flood, forcing his family and young children to wander in the streets.

When this news broke out on social media, Kafi Khalil among many other Pakistani celebrities posted on social media asking the country to help him get back on his feet.

Moreover, Khalil also shared Bugti’s JazzCash number so that Pakistanis and Netizens from across the borders can directly donate to the crooner.

During a telephonic conversation with a publication, Bugti shared that he and his family are safe and have sought refuge in a nearby city.

He also added that Xulfi and his peers from Coke Studio have helped him immensely along with others who have sent aid to his JazzCash number and that he is grateful for the support.

Xulfi and my peers from Coke Studio got in touch with me right after my brothers uploaded the photos of our displacement on social media. This was a day back, and since then their [CS] team has shown immense support.

Xulfi also took it to social media to announce that they will continue to support Bugti and his loved ones amid these hard times.

We are and will continue to be with Wahab Bugti Sahib and his loved ones to help overcome the difficult situation. Rest assured; he is being given all possible support on the ground. – he had tweeted.

Eva B Responds to Nida Kirmani’s Statement that Rap is an “Art Form for the Marginalised & Not for the Elite”

Psychologist, Academic, and author Nida Kirmani, in an official tweet, mentioned that rap is a form of the marginalized and that the elites should distance themselves from it. The tweet came after Coke Studio dropped Faris Shafi, which enraged many individuals, including his sister, Meesha Shafi.

The activist tweeted: “Class & ethnic privilege affect every field in Pakistan, but one of its most profound effects is on the arts. From music to literature to tv/film, most of those who make it big are members of the Punjabi elite. Coke studios throw in some Sindhis & Baloch as tokens but that’s it.”

She continued: “Faris Shafi’s rap may be entertaining but only reinforces this. Rap is an art form of the marginalised, adopted & transformed by folks from the inner city. This is why the rappers like Eva B coming from Lyari are part of a wider tradition. The elite should leave at least this.”

When researcher, writer, and socialist Ammar Rashid replied writing that they ‘don’t think any artist should be asked to renounce an art because of their social origins, everyone who can express themselves creatively in any art form should do it.

She replied: “Sure, everyone has a right to express themselves however they want, but we need to step back & look at the structural reasons why certain people get opportunities & attention. Similar critiques have been made of white people co-opting black music. It’s not about individuals.”

On the other hand, in a recent interview with Balochi rapper Eva B, Geo Digital asked the famous rapper who gained popularity followed to her hit track titled ‘Kanna Yari’ and ‘Rozi’ that was featured in Ms Marvel, what are her two cents on the tweet.

Eva B stated, “Only the poor don’t need to do it,” adding that in rap, everyone has the right to speak up no matter what their background is. “It’s not like everyone will be poor and say ‘I am poor, I do not eat anything, drink anything, I do not have money, so I will rap’,” explained Eva.

“Now, there are some people with money who want to prove themselves…Faris has also written and sang songs that are about society, that is based on reality. If anyone says that the rich shouldn’t do it and only the poor should do it, they do not know anything about rap’s history,” she added.

“Now obviously, one will rap about what happens in their daily lives. Everyone has their own choice in rap. Rap is free music; totally free!” she shared.

Even though the Lyari-famed rapper has made a successful debut in Hollywood, she still has a dream to one day perform with her icon – Eminem.

Pakistani rapper Eva B has become a household name in the country after receiving fame from her Coke Studio 2022 hit ‘Kanna Yari’.

Her journey initially started in 2014, but due to some issues, she was unable to move her career forward until 2019 when she released her song ‘Gully Girl’ on the popular music streaming platform Patari.  Her only condition was that she will keep her face hidden in her veil because she felt it was a part of her identity.

Following ‘Gully Girl’, she released more titles including ‘Mukhtasir Batain’, ‘Quarantine Aunti’, ‘Qalam Bolega’ and ‘Khusnawees’. She then went on to partner with Ali Gul Pir for ‘Tera Jism, Meri Marzi’ from which people started to recognize her, followed by ‘Anjanni Rahon Pe’ with Muhammad Baloch, and “Flex your Moves” with Anas Baloch.

Even though she is known for her Hijab, and stylish clothes that make her stand out in every video, there is more to the Baloch crooner than just her niqab. She shares:

“These days I wear more stylish clothes for the music videos so I stand out. But even then I always wear my hijab, the media has focused on my hijab rather than me… they do it for hype,” she said. “It’s normal in my society. Don’t let it be breaking news.”

3. She is from Lyari & a Conservative Family

Eva belongs to the area of Lyari. She is a hip-hop rapper and singer who comes from a Baloch family, and writes and sings in Balochi and Urdu. However, her family was not supportive of her decision of taking up a career in music. In fact, due to pressure, she had to drop music for some time in 2014.

In an interview, she shared that she received backlash from her family who considered the genre indecent for a young girl and who feared she would struggle to marry in deeply conservative Pakistan. She shares:

“Later they realised that I was quite persistent, so they surrendered. They realised I couldn’t be stopped,” she laughed, adding that her mother now supports her in the studio and on set.

Nonetheless, she is really proud of her upbringing and highlights Lyari wherever possible.

Because her brother and family members were against her rapping, she used to sneak out to production houses to record her work. She recalls how she turned up to studios for the first time, industry producers and managers were often left “astonished” when she showed up in her niqab. “They reacted like ‘what is this?’,” she said. “But then everything soon became normal.”

5. Eminem & Queen Latifah are Her Idols

Inspired by Queen Latifah and Eminem, Eva began to write her own lyrics and started posting her work on Facebook where she started to build a following.

“I’ve always been a fan of Marvel, but if you had told me five years ago that we would be doing an Urdu hip hop track with Pakistani and Indian influences for a Pakistani female superhero, I wouldn’t have believed it!” she added.

The fantastic part is the track is in Urdu which is something the Marvel Universe has introduced for the first time ever. When talking about her fame due to her hijab, she stated:

“For no reason, these people are giving the niqab all this hype. They think niqabi girls don’t do anything. But I’m just as normal as any other regular girl here. There’s no need for the hype, I really don’t like it,” Eva told The National.

“Nobody is forcing me to wear it. It’s my own decision. It’s good that I can go out and about without being recognised.”

While many influencers want to be recognized by their face, this one prefers staying under her veil. Her voice and her work are all the identification she needs. While talking about living a double life, she shared that it does feel a little weird. There are times when people are listening to or talking about her songs either in front of her or with her.

“It’s funny that people don’t recognise me, they play my songs but when I’m in front of them they don’t know it’s me,”

And when someone does figure out who she is, because of her distinctive eyes, she simply denies it. She shares:
