Bollywood cum Hollywood actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas has once again made headlines, but this time, the crooner made the spotlight for supporting the ‘courageous women’ of Iran.
While many applauded her for speaking up about the current issue of women’s oppression in Iran and the importance of highlighting it, others pointed out, asking has anyone heard Priyanka Chopra speak up for pressing issues in her own country.
Going by the latest Twitter trends, the actress has been on the receiving end for her alleged “activism of convenience.” Indians are calling Chopra-Jonas a hypocrite for not speaking up during the hijab row in India.
Several individuals took to social media to question the starlet. One tweeted:
“@priyankachopra your activism of convenience is pukeworthy. This means nothing when you choose to look away from the plight of hijabi women in India who are denied education for wearing a piece of cloth over their head and harassed by Hindutva goons and the state. You are a Hypocrite!”

Another wrote, “Priyanka Chopra’s concern for Iranian women is hugely appreciated, but her silence on Bilkis Bano and the state enabled persecution of Muslims, especially marginalised women in her home country, India is worth introspection?” One even tweeted: “Priyanka Chopra comes out in support of everyone except Indians.”

Celebrities can’t gain woke points by speaking about issues outside of their country, while simultaneously ignoring similar issues that are rampant in India.

Priyanka’s fans also came to her defence adding that the actress does help the people of her own country in her own way and if people did a little research they would have known about it.
Priyanka Chopra always takes a stand on issues happening in India and always let people know her home so it’s so upsetting when her people can’t just go to her page or research all that she do. Stop trying to drag her down everytime she’s doing good etc

Ashoke Pandit, also applauded the actress for taking a stand in a tweet that read, “Kudos to actor #PriyankaChopra ji for coming out in support of Iranian women who have been protesting over the death of #MahsaAmini. You have once again proved to have the guts to stand against the wrong. Hoping for others in the film & tv industry to follow you.”

This debate started after Priyanka posted a message on her Instagram in support of Irani women, writing:
“I am in awe of your courage and your purpose. It is not easy to risk your life, literally, to challenge the patriarchal establishment and fight for your rights. But, you are courageous women doing this every day regardless of the cost to yourselves,”
The protests in Iran sparked after Mahsa Amini was detained by Iran’s morality police for not covering her hair properly with a hijab. She passed away 3 days later.
Priyanka called upon others to hear the protestors’ call and join in “with our collective voices.”
“We must also get everyone who can influence others to join as well. Numbers matter. Add your voice to this critical movement. Stay informed and be vocal, so these voices can no longer be forced to stay silent. I stand with you. Jin, jiyan, azaadi… Women, life, freedom,” she wrote.
