Asqurr – Pakistan’s First & Only Women-Led Honey Brand
Asqurr is Pakistan’s first and only women-led honey brand from Hunza. The brand was started by Nausheen Barkat and her mother.
While giving an interview to ARY, Barkat shared that her mother always had a wish that her children be fed authentic/organic honey throughout their childhood.
All the siblings have always had a special love for honey, so she started bee farming with a single box. However, because of a busy life, the siblings were not able to help their mom grow the business at first.
Moreover, when people hear the word ‘honey bee’ they get a scary picture of buzzing bees and yes it is scary but once you learn the process and understand their importance, your perspective changes.
Barkat added that her mother doesn’t even wear protective gloves when working because she says she doesn’t enjoy the task at hand with gloves on, bee stings are at times used as therapy and not many people know about this.

Asqurr – Women Employment While Giving Back to Nature
Bee farming has been recognized as an important tool in helping women achieve economic empowerment and in preserving the natural environment.
Women in many rural areas often face difficulties in finding sustainable employment that provides a decent income. Bee farming offers a unique opportunity for women to become involved in a profitable and growing industry. Women can participate in the maintenance and management of bee colonies, which includes tasks such as feeding and caring for the bees, monitoring their health, and harvesting the honey. This type of work can be done on a small scale and does not require large investments, making it accessible to women with limited resources.

In addition to providing employment, bee farming also has a positive impact on the environment. Bees play a crucial role in pollination, which is essential for the growth of crops and wildflowers. By increasing the number of bees in an area, bee farming helps to promote the growth of vegetation, leading to a more diverse and productive ecosystem.
The importance of pollination cannot be overstated, as it is the foundation of our food supply. Without pollination, crops would fail and the food supply would be severely impacted. In fact, it is estimated that approximately one-third of the food we consume is directly or indirectly dependent on pollination by bees. By promoting the growth of crops, bee farming helps to provide food security to communities and to the world at large.
Moreover, the honey produced by bees is also a valuable product that can be sold for a profit. This provides women with a source of income and the opportunity to improve their economic status. Additionally, the sale of honey and other bee products can help to support local economies, creating a positive ripple effect throughout communities.
In addition to providing employment and promoting the growth of crops, bee farming also helps to preserve biodiversity. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for food and other resources continues to increase. This has led to the conversion of vast areas of natural habitat into agricultural land, putting tremendous pressure on ecosystems and wildlife. By promoting the growth of crops and wildflowers, bee farming helps to maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems and preserve biodiversity.
Moreover, bee farming can help to reverse the decline in bee populations that has been observed in recent years. The loss of bee populations has been linked to the use of pesticides, habitat loss, and other factors. By promoting the growth of bee populations, bee farming helps to restore the balance of ecosystems and protect the health of the planet.
