Bisma-Salangi

NASA has invited to fly out a 13-year-old from Karachi who has left them wildly impressed. Bisma Salangi who attends Evergreen Secondary School has invented a pair of anti-sleep glasses for drivers.

The purpose of the glasses is to prevent drivers from falling asleep at night while driving, to prevent accidents and worse.

In a span of 4 months, Bisman Salangi has achieved this innovation. NASA has invited her to their camp so that she can learn and invent more brilliant devices.

During her interview with ARY, Salangi stated that we as Pakistanis are very capable and can achieve anything if we put our minds to it.

The act of falling asleep behind the wheel is a dangerous phenomenon that jeopardizes the safety of drivers and others on the road. Pakistan, like many other countries, faces the grim reality of drowsy driving incidents that pose significant hazards.

Alarming Statistics

Drowsy driving is a widespread issue that transcends national borders, endangering lives across the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), fatigue-related accidents account for approximately 20% of all road traffic accidents worldwide.

In Pakistan alone, drowsy driving contributes to a significant number of road accidents, causing injuries and fatalities each year. Comprehensive statistical data from the National Highways and Motorway Police, as well as local traffic authorities, reveal the gravity of this issue.

Hazards and Risks Faced by Drowsy Drivers

Decreased Alertness

Lack of sleep or fatigue impairs a driver’s ability to stay alert and focused on the road. Fatigued drivers are more prone to delayed reaction times, increasing the risk of collisions or other traffic incidents.

Microsleep Episodes

The perils of drowsiness can lead to microsleep episodes, brief moments of unconsciousness lasting for a few seconds. In those moments, drivers are entirely unaware of their surroundings, dramatically escalating the chances of a catastrophic accident.

Impaired Decision-Making

Exhaustion affects cognitive functions, including judgment and decision-making abilities. Drowsy drivers may struggle to accurately assess potential dangers and make appropriate driving choices.

Drifting and Lane Departure: Fatigue often causes drivers to drift between lanes or even entirely off the road. This erratic behaviour endangers not only the drowsy driver but also other road users.

Raising Awareness

The Need to Recognize the Dangers: It is crucial for individuals to realize the risks associated with drowsy driving and take responsibility for their own safety and that of others on the road. Promoting awareness campaigns and educating the public about the consequences of drowsy driving is paramount in curbing this issue.

Recognize Fatigue

It is essential to identify signs of fatigue, such as frequent yawning, heavy eyelids, difficulty focusing, or experiencing memory lapses. Acknowledging these symptoms and understanding their potential impact on driving safety is crucial.

Plan for Adequate Rest

Prioritizing sufficient sleep is vital for ensuring driver alertness. It is advisable to establish healthy sleep routines and take regular breaks during long journeys to avoid excessive fatigue.

Utilize Alternative Transport Options

If a driver recognizes their exhaustion, it is imperative to consider alternative transport options such as public transportation, ride-sharing services, or relying on a well-rested co-driver.

Encourage Open Dialogue

Friends, family, and employers should engage in open discussions about the dangers of drowsy driving, fostering a culture that discourages individuals from getting behind the wheel when excessively fatigued.

We hope that kids like Bisma Salangi continue to make brilliant inventions that have the potential to save countless lives.
