The coronavirus cases in the port city are surging, mainly the Omicron variant. Amid the increase in cases, the city’s biggest food festival is still taking place from the 14th of January to the 16th (Fri, Sat, and Sun) at Beach View Park, Clifton.
When the COVID-19 cases rise, the authorities often oversee that big gatherings are being set up in the open air with people following SOPs, such as wearing a mask and being vaccinated. Since Karachi Eat has always been held in the open air, authorities haven’t raised any concerns as yet.
Regardless, it is pretty clear that people will have to take off their masks to be able to eat; after all, it is an eating festival. The people behind the event made an official announcement last night. As per the announcement, Karachi Eat will be following all government-mandated SOPS. “We have zero tolerance for SOP violations. Help us ensure a COVID safe family festival by cooperating with our *COVID compliance officers”.
It announcement further said, “No mask, No Proof of Vaccination, No Entry.”
“We look forward to welcoming you – Team Karachi Eat #BigEat22 #KarachiEat2022 #KhiEat22.”
A senior health practitioner and former executive director of the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center (JPMC), Dr. Seemin Jamali, told Arab News that she doubts the festival’s organizers will implement health guidelines adequately. She said, “We have seen that the authorities have failed to implement SOPs, except during complete lockdown. People don’t listen and I fear they will become the source of the spread of the virus.”
She further added, “Holding such a huge event when the positivity rate has crossed 15 percent and is expected to further rise is a very wrong decision.”
