The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) faced a series of arrests related to drug charges and allegations of sexual exploitation of students and teachers.
The police and announced some arrests of university officials and that it has made a special report claiming the involvement of certain teachers in drug sales and sexual exploitation.
On a recent Saturday, the City Circle police arrested the IUB transport in-charge on drug charges. The police reportedly found 8 grams of meth in his possession. The case has been registered under Section 9(2)1 of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act 1997, and an investigation is underway.
The arrest of IUB Treasurer and Chief of Security
On June 28, the Baghdad-ul-Jadid police detained the IUB treasurer at a checkpoint and seized meth and aphrodisiacs from him. A case was filed against him as well. Subsequently, the university’s chief of security was arrested after sexually explicit content, aphrodisiac pills, and drugs were found on his phone.
Allegations of Sexual Exploitation of Students
According to a special report by the police, the arrested officials were allegedly involved in blackmail and sexual exploitation of students and teachers within the university. The treasurer reportedly confessed to being part of a group of teachers who purchased and distributed drugs through students and organised inappropriate parties.

Involvement of the IUB Security In-Charge
The police’s investigation revealed that the security chief was cooperating with the group of Islamia Univeristy teachers, using drugs like ice, liquor, and charas to exploit and blackmail girls and implicate them in illicit activities.
Involvement of University Students in Drug Peddling
As part of the investigation, the police identified 11 students enrolled at Islamia University engaged in drug peddling. Screenshots of objectionable pictures and communication related to drug transactions were also obtained during the probe.
University’s Response
In response to the arrests, the Vice Chancellor of IUB, Prof Dr Athar Mehboob, wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Usman Anwar, requesting a high-level inquiry team to investigate the arrests. The university claims a zero-tolerance policy towards drug use and sexual harassment and believes that the cases against the officials are false.
Formation of Probe Panels
The Higher Education Department (HED) secretary for south Punjab has constituted a committee to investigate the case against the chief security officer. This committee will examine the alleged contraband substance and objectionable material found on his phone and is expected to submit a report within three days.
IUB’s Vice Chancellor also formed two inquiry committees to investigate the cases against the treasurer and chief security officers. These committees are led by Prof Dr Rao Saeed Ahmad, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and include other members from the university faculty.
