- Tere Bina Main Nahin is challenging patriarchal attitudes
- Aiza Awan’s character Tehniyat stands up for the pressures forced on mothers
- The themes of independence and family devotion continue to interplay in the drama
Tere Bina Main Nahi is a story that looks at independence and family devotion and how these two things can often be at odds. Despite being a love story, the drama penned by Maha Malik effectively conveys the conflicts that can emerge when people are frequently expected to choose one over the other.
In episode 29, Tehniyat came across Murtaza and Noorulain having lunch together (granted it was work related) but Murtaza never never told her about it and she only knows because she happened to see it.
In the most recent episode, Tehniyat visited her parents after a long time to do some birthday shopping for her daughter. Meanwhile, Murtaza comes home and sees his mother is sick with a fever and immediately gets upset upon learning that Tehniyat went to see her parents.
His mother explains that she would prefer if he didn’t disturb or rush her back, but he’s a little too upset to fully register what she’s saying. Tehniyat received a very angry phone call from Murtaza in front of her parents, who watched her face fall as he started lashing out and calling her irresponsible.

They decided to cut the trip short and drove back where Tehniyat’s mother (the most blameless person in this entire situation), holds herself accountable just so Tehniyat doesn’t feel singled out.
And that’s when Tehniyat can’t hold back her feelings anymore.
She didn’t let either of her parents feel like they did anything wrong. She called out society and Murtaza (who can be considered a symbolic representation of the concept) for forcing women to take up all the responsibility for everything at home.a
And she’s right! Murtaza wasn’t home either and when he did come back, he was in a position to take his mother to the hospital or call a doctor. There were a lot of options he had that didn’t depend on Tehniyat having to be there.
If Arsalan (another child in the family) needed to eat, then why can’t Murtaza cook or order something?
This increasing self-awareness about Murtaza is what sets Tere Bina Main Nahi apart and highlights how easily men are exempted from the pressures that women have to accept.
Kudos to Maha Malik and Six Sigma for sending a message that speaks to many mothers and wives nationwide!
