First Lady of Pakistan, Begum Samina Arif Alvi distributed rickshaws amongst the specially-abled community on Friday in Karachi.
The distributed vehicles had been specially manufactured according to the special individuals, so much so that they can be driven with a single hand.
In her remarks during the ceremony, Begum Alvi shared that these rickshaws will help enable people with disabilities in the city to earn livelihood and become independent.
Moreover, she also took the opportunity to call for attention and asked to bring these individuals into the national mainstream.
All the sections of the society should play their role in achieving this objective,
There are many organizations and NGOs that are working and operating for such individuals such as PWD-Lyari (People with Disabilities Lyari) and NOWPDP.
These NGOs have special programs that are helping enable the community by teaching everyday needed skills to earn money such as stitching and English, as well as helping the individuals find employment, or create it.
Previously during her visit to Lahore, the First Lady emphasized on the importance of giving these individuals equal rights. She said this during her visit to the Pakistan Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD) on Friday.
Samina Alvi also visited different sections of the PSRD including the school and vocational training center. She appreciated the Society’s work and said it was very pleasing to visit the place.
She added that the facilities available there were good and termed it a really good setup. Moreover, Samina Alvi wondered why such a setup was not available in Karachi.
Begum Alvi stressed the need to empower differently-abled persons and to ensure maximum facilities for them. She said there should be ramps in public places to ensure ease of mobility for differently-abled persons, as their movement was very essential for their better growth in society.
Efforts were also being made at the government level to facilitate the differently-abled persons to the maximum, she added.
Allah Almighty has blessed the differently-abled persons with a lot of abilities and people should understand that they are not less than anybody else in society. – First Lady of Pakistan Samina Alvi
