Mehreen Jabbar’s latest web series ‘Ek Jhooti Love Story’ released on 30th October on ZEE5, the same video streaming site where Asim Abbasi’s Churail was released. With Bilal Abbas Khan and Madiha Imam in the lead roles, the narrative of the web series encapsulates rishta culture so everyone, especially women, can relate to it on a personal level. Naturally, it also draws a picture of families who are hyper-involved in the journey to find the ‘ideal’ partner for their children.
Madiha Imam who also played the lead role pointed out during an interview that the series is set to provoke social thought patterns but ‘subtly’. Despite living in a modern world, women in Pakistan are still pressurized to get married. Often directly questioned or inquired about as to why the girl hasn’t married yet? Or how old is she? and other similar questions.
This needs to be taken into consideration. Firstly, it is a very personal decision. Secondly, it is emotionally draining. Women must be able to participate in different roles actively other than being a wife and a mother in today’s world. Such inquiries must stop as they are mortifying.
While the series dives into rishta culture and portrays how women face different challenges; we also see how men also face issues such as financially supporting their sister’s wedding. And most importantly, not being able to marry before them. We need to understand that everyone’s path is different from each other. There shouldn’t be pressures that become a hurdle for many.
For some, the right time to marry would be in their 20s, their 30s. In fact, any age is okay as long as people know what they are doing and are content with their decisions in life. We, as a society, need to respect individuality.
