SZABIST University Criticised for Inviting Digital Creator ‘Pawri Girl’ Dananeer Mobeen as Guest Speaker for “The Rise of Digital Stars”

One of Karachi’s credible universities, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST ), has been criticized online for inviting Dananeer Mobeen, aka Pawri girl, as a guest speaker.

Dananeer was invited to a talk arranged for media students, “The Rise of Digital Stars,” where digital media creators were present as guest speakers. After the discussion, students and internet users took it to social media to express their disappointment in selecting speakers for the talk. They said the decision reflects the declining standards of educational institutes in Pakistan.

Who is Dananeer Mobeen?

In 2021, life drastically changed for Mobeen after her “Pawri Horahi Hay” clip went viral.  She became an overnight social media influencer. We know how numbers on social media matter as they collectively enhance the chances of increasing reach in today’s world.

While Pawri girl’s meme was trending far and wide on social media with a gazillion of shares and likes, it allowed her to quickly earn a massive following on Instagram, which made her the most wanted influencer.

The pawri clip was a clip she made randomly when traveling to Nathia Gali with a group of friends. The video remained on her phone for 10 days after she recorded it and then was uploaded at her friends’ request on her Instagram. Currently, she has 2.1 million followers on Instagram.

Why are People on the Internet Criticising the Choice of Speaker for the session held at the university?

A digital influencer may take 5-8 years to reach the following Dananeer has garnered within 2 years. People’s disappointment may be linked to Mobeen’s overnight success over someone who has been through the grind, and hustled to uplift their career to gain followers, recognition, and improve their craft.

A user wrote, “we have multiple successful people this generation to be invited to educational institutes.”  He added, “I wonder what she talked about?”

Many People on the Internet also Lent Their Support to Dananeer

While there were many to criticize Dananeer and the declining standards of the university, many also took Dananeer’s side. They explained how she was a perfect choice, someone whose story is a success story.

Pakistani Students Assist Waiter at LUMS to Enroll into BS program at Szabist Islamabad

We all know how little kindness can change people’s lives, but we rarely come across people such as Ansar Ali, whose story will fill your heart. Ansar was a waiter at a restaurant in LUMS, who left his education at an early age to make ends meet after the sudden demise of his father.

The students discovered him during their project – Humans of LUMS. This is where they got a chance to sit down and talk to Ansar and learn about his struggles. Ansar left education after completing 9th grade, even when he took a keen interest in education.

The students asked him if he’s ever pondered upon the idea of going back to studies? To which he says that it’s too late for him now. He mentioned to the students that sometimes he gets to meet his classmates, who have completed their education, are currently employed, and have better jobs.

A Parting Gift By The Students

Fast-forward 2 years, a student at LUMS, Salaar Khan, now a president of the student body, decided with other students to send him back to school, a parting gift to the campus community. In a tweet, Salaar wrote: “Fast-forward two years. I was President of the student body & as our tenure drew to an end, we were mulling over a Parting Gift (a loose tradition where the graduating batch would sometimes give back to the campus community). We decided we were going to put Ansar back in school.”

Challenges

There were plenty of challenges on Ansar’s way to complete his bachelor’s degree from Szabist, including being out of school for too long, proper command in English, fees, finances back home, etc. The students together set a GOFUNDME for Ansar, which helped him immensely throughout his journey. The student body also collected money on campus.

He completed school at first, then college, and then later on enrolled into a University. He got enrolled in BS in Accounting and Finance at Szabist Islamabad and is all set to complete his degree after eight years of pushing his boundaries.

Pakistani Students Will Receive Scholarships Worth One Million Dirhams as Announced by UAE

An agreement has been signed between Pakistan Consulate in Dubai and several universities that will allow students to attain scholarships worth one million dirhams. Along with that, students will now benefit from discounts of up to 50 percent on tuition fees. 

Instead of moving back to Pakistan for higher education, students will now continue their studies in the UAE regardless of the expensive fee structures in the Emirates. On Sunday, the consulate visited Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) Dubai and on Monday, with Skyline University College, in Sharjah. 

Ali said, “Agreements with two other universities, Bolton University in Ras Al Khaimah and Al Dar University, will also be signed soon as details are being finalized with them,” he added. “Many of our students had no choice but to head back home since not many affordable options were available for them in the UAE. We want to encourage them to continue their studies here while staying close to their families.”

Only Pakistani students living in UAE can apply for this scholarship with a minimum GPA of 2.50

Pakistani students can apply for the scholarship through the consulate, connecting them to the university of their choice.

Consul General of Pakistan, HE Ahmed Amjad Ali, signs a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Skyline University College and the University City of Sharjah. 

Director of Marketing and Creative Communication at Skyline University College, Rakesh Gaur, says, “We have divided the scholarship into three metrics of 15, 25 and 50 percent with a minimum GPA of 2.50”. 

50% Scholarship 

Incase students are looking to apply for a 50 percent scholarship, they must have a GPA of 3.0 and sustain it through the entire program. 

20% Discount on Tuition Fee

Head of Dubai campus of Szabist University, Professor Dr. Humayun Naeem, says that a 20 percent discount on fees would be applicable for all students who had been suggested by the Pakistan Consulate.

He said, “With this discount, each student would be able to get AED 1,600 off per Bachelor of Business Administration program effective February onwards.” 

“We are very happy to support students from our community, especially in the times of this pandemic, where students might have to discontinue their education.”
