Remembering Pakistani Actor Durdana Butt in her True Essence

Pakistani senior actor Durdana Butt breathed her last in Karachi’s hospital today. She was 83 years old and had a dedicated career in acting in Pakistan. Butt was battling cancer and had been on a ventilator for 8 days due to COVID-19, according to Express Tribune.

Actor and RJ Khalid Malik confirmed the news on Instagram. He said in a post: “Inna lillahi wa inna illahi rajioon.
The wise. The humorous. The insightful Durdana Butt is a special soul now back in His embrace.” 

Butt is best known for her roles in Fifty Fifty, Aangan Terha, Ruswai, Intezaar and Tanhaiyaan.

Education

Durdana completed her studies at Kinnaird College in Lahore. She later went to The University of Toledo in the United States for her PhD in Ohio Educational Administration.  Instead of pursuing a career in educational administration, Durdana sought acting opportunities. She briefly worked on PTV Channel in commercials and as a model.

Her first acting gig with Moin Akhtar, Fifty Fifty, a popular drama in the late 70s, garnered a great reputation. By the end of the series in 1984, she was quite popular among the masses due to her role.

In the 80s, she appeared in 3 dramas, including Aangan Terha, Tanhaiyaan, and Naukar Ke Aage Chakar.

In Aangan Terha, she played the emotional role of Sultana Sahiba, which again received appreciation from many. She paired again with Moin Akhtar in a comedy series in 1982 called Naukar Ke Aage Chakar. 

Tanhaiyaan was another drama from the 80s that did well. She played the role of ‘Bibi’ alongside Marina Khan, Shehnaz Sheikh and Badar Khalil.

After 13 years, she entered the acting scene again and played numerous roles for many more dramas, out of which Ruswai from 2019 and Intezaar from 2016 was much appreciated.

Pakistani Literary Genius Haseena Moin passed away in Karachi early morning on Friday. In the 1970s, Moin penned down Pakistan’s first original script, Kiran Kahani. The 79 year-old was probably the most cherished dramatist, playwright, and scriptwriter to come out of Pakistan. Over the years, Moin secured several accolades under her belt.

She has written several plays for stage, radio, and television, some of which have even gained an international reputation. She received the Pride of Performance award for her services to the performing arts in Pakistan. Her best dramas include Dhoop Kinary, Ankhai, Tanhaiyan, Ahat, and Ansoo.

The audience admired Haseena Moin’s plays as they portrayed women of strong characters, such as Marina Khan’s character Sanya in “Tanhaiyaan” or Dr. Zoya in “Dhoop Kinare.” The characters portrayed women who were resilient, strong in the face of adversity, and independent. They had a strong sense of ethics and morality that earned the respect of those around them, including their male counterparts. They were a role model for future generations.

Haseena Moin Receives “The Storyteller of Pakistan” – Lifetime Achievement Award from RINSTRA

RINSTRA, Pakistan’s first short-form digital media platform for on-demand streaming and user-generated content, celebrated 20 November as Pakistan’s First “Storytellers Day” to recognize and celebrate content creators, writers, bloggers, and storytellers of Pakistan.

RINSTRA is the premier partner of the AGAHI Awards this year. The AGAHI Awards are Pakistan’s most prestigious and sought-after journalism recognition, as an annual award series for journalists across Pakistan and beyond. These awards provide a platform to celebrate and recognize the work of credible and dedicated journalists.

RINSTRA Technologies collaborated with AGAHI Awards to create a new category for the Storyteller of Pakistan. Pakistan’s most prominent storyteller Haseena Moin was awarded the Storyteller of Pakistan – Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize her work, commitment, and dedication to creativity and diversity.

Haseena Moin is Pakistan’s most celebrated dramatist, playwright, and scriptwriter. She has written several plays for stage, radio, and television, some of which have even gained an international reputation. She is also the Pride of Performance award for her services to the performing arts in Pakistan.

Dr. Adil Akhtar, Founder, and Chairman of RINSTRA, said, “Storytelling, whether factual or fictional, is an intrinsic human characteristic. The use of technology has shaped how society interacts within and outside to tell stories about itself and others.” Starting from around the year 1800, technology has contributed to creating photography, motion pictures, telephones, radio, TV, digital media, mobile and social media; the current most influential form of communication is social media. He further said, “Recognizing the shift in content creation and consumption, RINSTRA has taken the lead by creating 20 November as the Pakistan Storytellers Day. RINSTRA’s efforts are to encourage more storytellers to embrace the digital platform economies and start creating content for social media platforms.”\

This year, 2020, RINSTRA exclusively supported journalists reporting in several categories, including Entertainment, Storytelling, Photo, and Video Journalism. The following winners are the award winners of the prestigious AGAHI Awards’ Journalist of the Year for 2020 in:

  1. Entertainment, Sara Tariq from BBC World Service
  2. Photo Journalist Fazal Khan from Dawn Media Group
  3. Video Journalist Sidra Azhra Dar from Voice of America (VOA)
  4. Storytelling, Sadeqa Khan from DW Urdu

Misbah Ishak Khalid, Chief Creative Officer for RINSTRA, gave the awards to the respective journalist at the AGAHI Awards 2020 ceremony held at NICL Auditorium Islamabad.
