However, life hasn’t always been easy for Roomana Anjum. In an interview with Taskeen Pakistan, she opened up about her life, including her battle with suicidal thoughts and mental health issues.
Taking it from the top, Anjum shared that being a brown woman in society is already traumatic,
The brave young lady shared that there have been three instances where she had extreme suicidal thoughts, but she did not let them take control of her. However, she added that in that moment, the most important thing to remember is that ‘you matter’.
She goes on to add that because you are not just a woman, you are also a daughter, a wife, a sister, but the moment you try to be yourself, problems arise. You are asked, you want your own identity? How come? Moreover, if you come from a very humble background, you face even more issues, such as what will people say (when your daughter goes out)? She will dress in western clothes, meet people, so there is a lot a woman has to face and balance and manage strategically.
Roomana Anjum adds that it is very important to create boundaries, and more important to learn how to say ‘no’ not just in sexual matters, be it your boss, family, partner, if you can be confident and stern enough to say “no”, matters should conclude there and then, but you need to be comfortable and confident enough in your own skin to do so.
