- Over 40 women from Pakistan are playing key roles in Hajj 2023, including leadership positions

This year it is estimated that about 179,000 pilgrims from Pakistan will embark on the journey of a lifetime – the holy pilgrimage of Hajj. Pakistan has deployed a remarkable number of over 40 women to play key roles during Hajj 2023 most of which are leadership positions to serve the pilgrims and ensure a smooth Hajj this year. This step highlight’s Pakistan’s commitment to gender equality and women empowerment.
According to Pakistan’s religious affairs ministry, over 40 women are working in the Hajj Mission in the two cities of Makkah and Madinah and 15 more women will be travelling to take on key roles during Hajj 2023.
A spokesperson for the ministry of religious affairs mentioned,
“These women are serving in various sections, and some of them are even leading different departments, some lady doctors and female paramedics are also contributing to the country’s Hajj medical mission from Pakistan.”
One of the women making a significant contribution towards the Hajj mission in Makkah, Nadia Razzaq is serving as the IT head in Makkah, has said that the women coming from Pakistan arrived in Saudi Arabia to play key roles in different sectors including food, accommodation and transportation. Razzaq mentions,
“Women are making valuable contributions to every sector of the Hajj operations, showcasing their best efforts.”
As mentioned by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Pakistani women are at the forefront of various sectors of Hajj 2023. One such woman is Ayesha Ijaz, a call center in charge at Makkah’s main control office. Talking to Arab News, she mentioned that she has deployed call agents that handle all the pilgrims’ calls all day and night and notify the respective sector commanders after entering the details into their systems.

After the pandemic, this year Saudi authorities have reinstated the quota allowing a larger number of pilgrims to participate in Hajj this year. While about 80,000 will be performing Hajj under the government scheme, the rest will be facilitated by private operators. Ms. Ayesha Ijaz, oversees the arrangements made by the private tour operators for pilgrims. She further mentions,
“This includes addressing their issues and ensuring the provision of the facilities promised to them in Makkah, Madinah, and other locations during the Hajj.”
