  • Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested by Pakistani police and officials, leading to widespread protests and chaos in Pakistan.
  • Videos and images have surfaced showing police and officials engaging in violent actions against protesters, including women, children, and specially-abled individuals.
  • The arrest is related to corruption allegations involving the Al-Qadir Trust and accusations of obtaining land and money laundering.

Following the arrest of the former PM of Pakistan, Imran Khan, chaos has erupted across Pakistan. Protestors have staged rales and sit-ins demanding that Khan be released without any harm to his health and life while taking on Pakistani police and officials.

While multiple videos and images have surfaced, we have seen in many cases that the Pakistani police and other officials have not stopped from retaliating, whether the protestor is a man, woman, a child, or a specially-abled individual.

Two videos in particular have caused massive backlash for the police force, one of the videos shows a harmless woman taking a stand who is then dragged away from her hair by an officer.

Although, as per reports she was released, the video shows a negative perception of the men in uniform. People on social media are calling out the Pakistani police officers and other officials, saying that they are meant to protect the public, not abuse them.

Moreover, another video that has caught attention shows a young teenager being dragged from her wheelchair during a friendly protest. The teenager kept falling due to the lack of support, but the police continued to drag her.

Again, resulting in backlash from the public.

In another incident, a mother is seen struggling to keep her young infant in her hands, as she tries to free her family from the police.

Understanding Imran Khan’s Arrest Leading to the Protests

In order to understand why Pakistani women and men have protested, it is important to understand what happened.

Khan has been charged in more than 100 cases including corruption, terrorism and blasphemy since his removal. His arrest was made in connection to the Al-Qadir Trust case, which was initiated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government last year.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) said Khan was arrested “for the crime of corruption” connected to the trust. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan confirmed that the former prime minister, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was arrested in a case pursued by the anti-corruption body.

The allegations against Khan and his Wife are that both had allegedly obtained land worth billions of rupees for the Al-Qadir University Trust from Malik Riaz to build an educational institute. Moreover, they allegedly helped Riaz launder more than $239m and caused a loss to the national exchequer.
