Maryam Mujtaba, a resident of Muzaffarabad, has become the first female commercial pilot from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Maryam hails from a family from Shopian in occupied Kashmir. These Kashmiri migrants are now settled in Rawalpindi and Muzaffarabad. Ms Mujtaba first went under an initial aviation training from Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Later, she moved to New-Jersy, the USA, to receive her commercial pilot licence (CPL) for further training.
Inspiration for Other Women
Maryam is an inspiration for other women and young girls for her continuous efforts. Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Sardar Masood Khan termed her as a role model. He showered his praises on Maryam and his spouse Mujtaba Rathore Aga, deputy superintendent of the AJK police.
The president extended congratulations to Ms Mujtaba after she called on him at the Aiwan-i-Sadr. Just recently, PIA promoted Maryam as their ‘first officer’ after she finished requisite flying hours on domestic routes on Airbus-320.
She is also a brand ambassador for Special Communications Organisation (SCO), a Pakistan army running telecom network in AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.
“You have inspired and encouraged several women in the liberated territory to consider aviation as a promising career,” he remarked. During the conversation, Maryam told the president that flying a plane was her childhood dream and that “PIA had given her wings to translate it into reality.”
