Many young girls in Pakistan still use cloth instead of sanitary pads due to lack of education, awareness or affordability.
1 in 5 girls in Pakistan still miss school due to the usage of cloth while menstruating. According to UNICEF, “Water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in schools are inadequate to meet menstruating girls’ needs” (in Sindh) which also becomes another great challenge for young women to be able to attend school while being on their period.
Always Azad by Always Pakistan
Always Pakistan has taken notice of the issue and under their latest campaign, #AlwaysAzad have pledged to donate free sanitary napkins to young girls.
Young school going girls lack knowledge about puberty and menstrual practices. Many actively hide the onset of menstrual periods from fathers and other male members. Other than this, there are many other challenges such as fear of leakage, public embarrassment, fear of the first menstrual period, to name a few. This often results in young girls being forced to stay back home and miss school.
Keeping these great challenges in mind and many others, young Pakistani girls prefer to stay at home and not attend school while menstruating, making them miss out on important lessons and hindering their progress month after month.
Pakistani actresses Mawra Hocane, Minhal Khan, Sana Javed, and Sarah Khan have come forward in support of Always to send young girls back to school.
This will help young women regain their confidence to go out in public while being on their period. Always plans to bring back the confidence in young girls so more girls can attend school and one day become successful enough to participate in economic activities in the country actively.
