Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has come forward to help other women filmmakers and storytellers in Pakistan. She has launched a platform called ‘Patakha Pictures’ that will provide grants and at the same time mentor women filmmakers.
Understanding the problem at hand that in Pakistan, it is difficult to find sponsors for small films. Chinoy announced on Instagram in a post. She said, “Telling stories that matter is important to me, and I also know how hard it is to find the finances and mentorship to do so…at SOC films, we routinely get emails, calls and visits from young women across Pakistan who want to be able to tell their stories.”
She further added, “Today, I’m launching a platform that I hope will help them do so! A small grants and mentorship program for female filmmakers across #Pakistan who want to work in short-form storytelling…I hope in a few years from now, this platform will enable a filmmaker to represent our country at @theacademy #womenhelpingwomen #payitforward @patakhapictures @soc_films”.
There’s no doubt that her latest venture will nourish many minds of many women looking to begin their careers in the filmmaking field. Details of how to apply and where to apply haven’t been revealed as yet.
In March, Sharmeen launched a website to address social issues. The platform aims to support activists, legislators, and students to come together in a single place and find solutions to problems that are common among religious minorities in the country. The website’s three main categories include minority stories, human rights defenders, and legislations and minority issues.
The website also states discriminatory laws against minorities and punishment, blasphemy law, and other important issues usually left in the dark. This will prove to be a great help for those who are looking for basic information.
