Durdana Ansari, OBE, has become the first Pakistani female and Muslim in the world to get receive rank as a Captain of the British Royal Navy. The Queen herself approved the rank.
The news was announced by Pakistani singer, Asim Azhar who addressed Ansari as Khala in a heartfelt tweet on the microblogging site. He wrote, “Today is a proud moment for not just me or my family but for the whole nation. Durdana Ansari OBE becomes the first Muslim & Pakistani female in the world to get ranked as a Captain of the British Royal Navy approved by the Queen, herself.”
He added, “I’m so proud of you, Khala jaan.”

Durdana was born in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. She moved to the capital of Pakistan and grew up there. She then moved to London, the UK, where she received her degree in media and journalism from Birkbeck University.
Ansari is a British entrepreneur, public speaker and activist for female empowerment. Formerly she was a charity director, presenter, journalist and producer at the BBC World Service. As a journalist, Ansari has interviewed politicians, Bollywood and Pakistani actors, artists, film directors, poets, Kashmir earthquake victims, and Afghan refugees.
In 2012, she received an order from the British Empire for creating an economic development program for Muslim women.
She also serves as a Brand Ambassador to the Swat Relief Initiative (SRI), to Mirpur University of Science & Technology (MUST), and as a trustee for ‘Quest for Education’ (QFE).
In 2018, she was appointed Hon Lt Cdr and in 2019 promoted to Hon Cdr Royal Navy.
