We all have a love and hate relationship with Karachi. The city is full of criminals and muggers looting the residents of Karachi openly in daylight.
We, as a country, aren’t doing too well economically, and so incidents such as getting mugged have dangerously increased in the port city. For the past couple of weeks, we have heard people in the neighborhood, and close friends and family circles complain of muggers. Even on social media, in plenty of local Facebook groups, we have heard how people are scared to go out of their homes and tired of living in a place so unsafe for their families and friends.
Having criminals openly looting citizens every day is unjust, and a few people fight back during the encounter and lose their lives. We have witnessed angry citizens running their cars over the muggers in other scenarios. All in all, the situation outside is quite scary.
We have listed down below 5 precautions you can take to avoid getting mugged in Karachi:
1 – Go Home Early Before the Sunsets
Believe it or not, light plays a huge role. The lack of street lights and vacant narrow lanes have become the top reasons why muggers seamlessly get a hold of your possessions. Usually, when there’s no light, and you’re getting in your car or out of your car, that’s when they approach you.
2 – Don’t Use Your Phone in the Car
Often people charge their phones in their cars and may also use them for various purposes, mainly because of Google maps. Quit using your phone on the go. If you think you can’t manage without one, try downgrading your phone to a simpler and cheaper version, so it goes unnoticed. If you carry your laptop, hide it somewhere, so no one knows you are carrying one.
3 – Withdraw Cash from ATMs at Malls, Supermarkets, Hospitals, or the Airport
Don’t withdraw cash from ATMs from banks or located in streets. Often, muggers are parked somewhere around where they can see your moves. Once you leave, they tend to follow you. The best practice is to withdraw money from ATMs inside malls, supermarkets, hospitals, or airports.
4 – Be Cautious in Public Spaces
Avoid carrying an expensive phone in public spaces. No need to open your wallet and display cash to onlookers. No need to wear jewelry that looks like gold or silver. Downplay, don’t look wealthy.
5 – Keep a Track of Your Surroundings When Leaving Home and Returning Home
If you are someone who tends to carry cash and other expensive items on the go, there is a chance that a mugger will first track your routes, schedule, etc. So when entering your street, look for any bikes following you. Do the same when you exit your street.
